The late afternoon sun poured over the countryside like molten gold, painting the Narváez estate in warm, radiant hues. Shadows stretched long across the fertile fields, while the sweet, earthy aroma of freshly turned soil lingered in the air. A gentle breeze whispered through the trees, carrying with it the quiet promise of dusk. Victoria Olivares quickened her pace along the winding dirt path. Her worn, faded dress fluttered against her legs, a testament to her unyielding spirit despite the struggles life had thrown her way. Her sun-bronzed skin shimmered with a determined glow, her every step a reflection of quiet strength. She clutched a folded slip of paper in one hand, a message entrusted to her by her ailing grandfather, who often served as a go-between for the estate’s workers. But as she approached the edge of the farm, voices cut through the stillness. Harsh and mocking tones echoed near the barn, accompanied by laughter. Her heart sank as she recognized the sound. “Look at you,” sneered Eusebio, one of the farmhands, blocking her path. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and notorious for his cruel humor. “What are you doing here, little beggar girl? Lost your way to the river?” Victoria stiffened, clutching her shawl tightly around her shoulders. “I came to deliver a message,” she said, her voice trembling but defiant. Eusebio laughed, stepping closer. “A message, huh? Maybe you’re just looking for some attention. Don’t worry, I’ll give you plenty of that.”q Before she could react, he grabbed her wrist. Panic flashed across her face as she struggled to pull away, but his grip was unyielding. “Let her go.” The voice was firm, cutting through the tension like a blade. Both Victoria and Eusebio turned to see a man on horseback a few feet away. AlexanderNarváez was every bit the image of a gentleman out of place in the countryside. Dressed casually but with an air of sophistication, his striking features were set in a stern expression. His piercing eyes locked onto Eusebio, and the farmhand immediately loosened his grip, stepping back reluctantly. “Señor Alexander,” Eusebio muttered, his bravado faltering. “I was just—” “Harassing a defenseless woman on my land?” Alexander interrupted, his tone sharp. “Get back to work before I have you thrown off this farm.” Eusebio grumbled under his breath but obeyed, retreating toward the fields. Victoria, still shaken, looked up at Alexander. Their eyes met, and for a moment, the world seemed to fall away. His gaze softened as he took in her disheveled appearance and the hint of tears in her eyes. “Are you all right?” he asked, his voice gentle now. She nodded quickly, though her voice betrayed her nerves. “Yes… thank you, señor.” “You shouldn’t have to deal with men like him,” Alexander said, his brow furrowing. “Do you live nearby?” Victoria hesitated, unsure of what to reveal. “At the edge of the forest, with my grandfather and sister.” Something about her vulnerability tugged at Alexander’s heart. “Be careful around here,” he advised. “And if anyone bothers you again, come find me.” She managed a faint smile, her gratitude shining through. “Thank you, señor. I will.” As she turned to leave, Alexander watched her go, a sense of intrigue settling over him. He couldn’t explain why, but there was something about Victoria, something raw and untamed that he couldn’t ignore. As Victoria walked away from Alexander, her heart pounded in her chest. The encounter had left her rattled, though she couldn’t quite explain why. The way he had looked at her, almost as if he saw beyond the dirt on her dress and the exhaustion in her eyes, was unsettling. She had grown used to being invisible to the wealthy people who lived on this land, but AlexanderNarváez, the son of the estate’s owner, hadn’t looked at her with disdain. Instead, there had been something… compassionate in his gaze. Shaking off the feeling, she quickened her pace, her mind filled with thoughts of her family. Her grandfather had fallen ill, and her sister needed help with the household chores. She couldn’t afford to let distractions like this pull her away from her responsibilities. Back at the small, humble cottage she called home, Victoria found her grandfather resting in his favorite chair by the fire. His graying hair and weathered skin showed the signs of a life full of hard labor, and his deep-set eyes often sparkled with wisdom despite his age. “Did you get the message to the estate?” he asked softly, his voice a hoarse whisper. “Yes, grandfather,” Victoria replied, setting down the basket of herbs she had gathered. “But there was an incident.” Her grandfather raised an eyebrow. “What happened?” Victoria hesitated, trying to decide how much to share. “I was… harassed by one of the farmhands. But a man, AlexanderNarváez, came and stopped him.” Her grandfather’s eyes darkened. “Narváez?” he repeated, his voice filled with a mixture of surprise and caution. “That name carries weight around here.” “I know,” Victoria muttered, her gaze dropping to the floor. “I didn’t want to trouble you with it.” Her grandfather studied her for a long moment, his wise old eyes narrowing. “You should always be cautious around those who have power, Victoria. Remember that not all kindness is pure. It may have been a simple act of pity, but don’t let it cloud your judgment.” Victoria nodded, although her heart still carried the lingering warmth of Alexander’s gentle words. She didn’t know why, but something about him felt different. She couldn’t help but wonder if there was more to him than the privilege he was born into. Meanwhile, back at the Narváez estate, Alexander paced the grand hallway of the mansion, his thoughts consumed with the encounter he had witnessed earlier. He couldn’t stop thinking about the young woman. Victoria, he had heard of her before, but he had never truly paid attention. She was different from the other workers on the estate, with a fierceness in her eyes that made her stand out. As the heir to the Narváez fortune, Alexander had been raised with all the privileges money could buy. He had never lacked anything, yet he found little joy in his family’s wealth. His father, a shrewd businessman, had always expected him to follow in his footsteps, to take control of the family’s empire. But Alexander wanted nothing more than to escape the suffocating expectations that surrounded him. It wasn’t until he had encountered Victoria that he realized how far removed he had become from the real world. She was a stark reminder of everything he had lost: simplicity, authenticity, and a life untainted by power and greed. There was something raw and beautiful in her strength. He was intrigued and more than that, he was drawn to her in a way he couldn’t quite explain. He paused in front of a large window overlooking the estate’s lush grounds, staring out at the landscape with a sense of restlessness. The sound of footsteps interrupted his thoughts, and his mother appeared in the doorway, her elegant form draped in a fine silk gown. “Alexander,” she said, her tone cool yet laced with concern. “Is everything all right? You’ve been distant lately.” “I’m fine, Mother,” Alexander replied, turning to face her. He forced a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Just thinking.” “About that girl, I presume?” his mother asked, arching an eyebrow. Alexander stiffened. “What do you mean?” “I know you, Alexander,” she said with a knowing smile. “You’ve always been impulsive, and I can see you’ve taken an interest in her. But don’t forget where you come from.” Alexanders sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “I’m not a child anymore, Mother. I know who I am.” His mother’s gaze softened slightly, but there was still a hint of worry in her eyes. “I just want you to be careful. There are things about her family, about her, that you may not know.” Alexander frowned, his curiosity piqued. “What do you mean?” “Nothing,” she said quickly, waving her hand dismissively. “It’s nothing. Just… be careful.” Before Alexander could press her further, she turned and walked away, leaving him standing there, more unsettled than ever. His mind raced with questions about Victoria, about her family, and about the mysterious connection he felt. Meanwhile, Victoria’s life continued to unfold with quiet determination. The days passed, and the estate became a distant memory in her mind, buried beneath the weight of daily struggles. But the chance encounter with Alexander was never far from her thoughts. She found herself wondering about him often, despite her best efforts to push those thoughts away. One morning, as she walked toward the market with her sister, she spotted a familiar figure standing near the gates of the estate. Her heart skipped a beat when she realized it was Alexander. He was looking directly at her. At that moment, everything seemed to stop. The bustling sounds of the market, and the chatter of the townspeople, all faded into the background as their eyes locked. Alexander seemed to hesitate for a moment, then stepped forward, his gaze intense and unwavering. “Victoria,” he called out, his voice carrying through the noise of the crowd. Her breath caught in her throat. She should have walked away, ignored him, and kept her distance. But something in his voice, something in the way he said her name, kept her rooted to the spot. “Señor Alexander,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. He took a few more steps toward her, his eyes scanning the busy street around them. “I didn’t expect to see you here.” Victoria nodded, her pulse racing. “I was just… going to the market.” “I see.” He hesitated, then lowered his voice. “I wanted to speak with you again.” Before she could respond, a loud voice interrupted them. “Alexander!” They both turned to see a woman approaching, her heels clicking sharply on the cobblestone street. She was tall and elegant, and her presence seemed to command attention. “Who is this?” the woman asked, her eyes narrowing as she studied Victoria. Alexander’s face darkened, and for a moment, he seemed unsure of how to respond. Victoria, feeling the weight of the situation, took a step back. “I should go,” she said quietly, before turning and walking away. As she disappeared into the crowd, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever. As Victoria rounded a corner, her heart still pounding, she heard footsteps behind her. Turning around, she found herself face-to-face with the woman who had interrupted their conversation. “You’re not from around here, are you?” the woman asked coldly, a sneer on her lips. “Stay away from Alexander. He’s not someone you want to get involved with.” Victoria’s blood ran cold. “Who are you?” The woman smiled, her eyes glinting with malice. “I’m someone who knows exactly what you’re capable of.”
