Chapter 1: New Beginnings
The courtyard is already lively and chatty long before the formal event begins. I can feel the music under my skin as I adjust the tassel on my graduation cap for the fifth time, I glance over at my mom in the stands and she's waving her phone at me, mouthing something I can't quite make out.
Probably "Smile?"
After four long years of staying up until dawn, finishing case briefs, part time jobs, surviving on instant noodles and ambition. I kept pretending I wasn't homesick every night of my first semester, but now it's finally over. Somehow it feels both too soon and long overdue.
"Liya!"
I turn around at the sound of my name, it's Jasmin, my roommate since sophomore year, wobbling in heels she clearly regrets wearing. She looks radiant in her black gown.
"You're gonna make me cry" I say to her, even though I can already feel my throat tightening.
"Don't you dare" she says, laughing as she grabs my hand.
"We've still got a million photos to take. I can't have you looking blotchy before the Dean even calls out names."
I laugh, but deep down there's something bittersweet about it all. This last hour we have together before the real world begins.
Everyone got to their seats as the ceremony was ready to begin. The speeches are long and predictable, something about perseverance, courage and the endless pursuit of justice. The kind of thing that sounds inspiring in the moment but fades the second you step off the podium. Still. I listen to those words. Because today, it's for us, the dreamers, the kids who burned themselves out chasing a seat in this courtyard. Dean Marlowe scans the crowd, his gaze sweeping over the graduates before continuing.
"Before we begin calling out our graduates, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge a few students. If I call out your name, please stand"
My heart hammers in my chest.
"Nathan Cole, joining Carter & Associates, top of his class in Legal Writing"
Nathan stands, smiling as everyone applause and cheering for him.
"Aisha Ramirez, heading to Mason & Grant, youngest intern ever accepted into their Human Rights division."
Another applause ripples through the crowd, as Aisha beams with joy.
Then the Dean's eyes find me. My stomach twists.
"And Liya Nelson, graduating with Masters, recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence and selected to join JFK Law Firm in Los Angeles."
The crowd erupts. I sit frozen for a moment as the applause washes over me, everyone cheering and shouting out my name and a few eyes narrowing with envy. My cheeks burn as I stand slowly, and meet the Dean's approving gaze. He gives me a subtle nod, a quiet acknowledgment that I've earned this.
The ceremony continues and one by one, our names are called. the line moves steadily, each step towards the stage feels surreal, like walking though a dream I've only rehearsed a thousand times in my mind.
"Liya Nelson!" my heart leaps, I straighten my gown and step forward, my heels clicking against the floor. Dean Marlowe extends his hand as I reach him, a warm steady grip that somehow makes the moment feel both monumental and personal.
"Congratulations, Liya" he say while smiling. I take the diploma and it's heavier than I expected. The photographer snaps a photo. Smile.
Somewhere in the crowd I spotted my mom again. She's crying, just openly crying now, and even from this far away I can see how proud she is. She raises her phone again and snaps a photo, I don't pose this time, I just look back and smile, for the little girl she raised and for every sacrifice she made so I could stand here today.
As i step off the stage, a few of my classmates rush forward and hugging me, whispering congratulations, sharing in the elation. "You did it!" one of them says. "JFK that's huge"
The applause from the audience rises again, a wave carrying everyone's accomplishments, everyone's future. Dean Marlowe steps forward and so do our professors.
"Remember, wherever your path leads, law is not a weapon for power, but a voice for truth. Carry that with you always."
Then comes the signal, the moment we've all been waiting for.
"On three.... one, two, three!"
Black caps soar into the air, the crowd erupts in laughter and cheers. I throw mine high, watching it arc like a small defiant flag against the sky, before it lands somewhere in the crowd.
After the ceremony, the courtyard turns into chaos. Laughter spills through the air and every corner fills with hugs and promises to stay in touch. The beautiful kind of mess you want to bottle forever.
My mom finds me near the fountain, out of breath, clutching her purse like she just sprinted a marathon.
"My baby!" she says and before I can say anything, she pulls me into a hug that smells like home, lavender and laundry detergent and everything safe.
"Mom" I laugh into her shoulder. "You're squashing me."
She pulls me back to look at me. Her eyes are watery but shining. "You did it hunny! you did it, your Dad would be so proud"
I couldn't hold back my tears when my mom mentioned my Dad, she pulled me back into her arms.
"Liya! come on we are taking a group photo" Jasmin dragging me along with her.
We take pictures with professors, classmates and then just the two of us.
I spotted my mom again after taking so many photo's.
"Hey mom, are you ready to go?"
"So it's really happening," she says quietly. "My baby's moving all the way across the country."
I nod, and began to walk while holding her hand. "It's what I worked for."
"I know. I'm proud, I just...." she pauses. " You're going to be all alone out there, Liya. No family and friends."
"I'll make friends," I say, trying to sound confident.
"And the city..... LA. is different from here, people can be tricky."
"Mom," I teased lightly. "I'm going there to work, not get lost in some Hollywood scandal"
She laughs then squeezes my hand. "Just promise me you'll call every night, okay?"
"I promise"
After saying goodbye to everyone, mom and I went back home together, to the quiet street I grew up on. But when she opened the front door...
"SURPRISE!"
I jumped back.
My entire family was packed inside the house. My Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and cousins even the little ones.
"What on earth!" I gasped
"Congratulations Liya!" Grandma pulled me for a hug first, kissing my forehead then Grandpa hugged me next, nearly squeezing my ribs into dust.
"So are you ready for the big move Liya?" my aunt ask
"Not really, there is still so much to do before I leave"
"And what about your friend?... what's her name again?" my cousin Jake asked
"Who? Jasmin?" I laugh "No she will be moving to New York next month, she's taking over her father's business and no you can't have her number" I teased
Everyone sat around the table and began to dish, the table was full of delicious food. Everyone was happy and enjoying the party. I realized then that this... this warmth was everything I'd be leaving behind.
