CHAPTER ONE; THE INHERITANCE.
The cool hum of the city below him was a far cry from the deafening silence that filled Lucas Drake’s penthouse office. It was the kind of silence that only vast wealth could buy—a quiet that suffocated, rather than comforted. Lucas had grown accustomed to it over the years, wrapping it around himself like a protective cloak, shutting out the world beyond his empire’s glass walls. The folder on his desk, though thin, carried the weight of a legacy he’d long since tried to forget. It was a relic from a past he’d buried under layers of concrete, glass, and profit margins—a past that had come back to haunt him in the form of his father’s will. Lucas leaned back in his leather chair, his sharp eyes scanning the skyline. The city was his playground, a testament to his achievements. Every building, every deal, every dollar, had been earned through his sheer will and determination. He’d carved out his place in the world with cold precision, never allowing distractions or emotions to get in the way. Yet here was a distraction he couldn’t ignore. His father’s attorney, a gray-haired man with tired eyes, cleared his throat, pulling Lucas from his thoughts. “As I mentioned, Mr. Drake, your father’s will includes an unusual stipulation. To inherit the estate, you are required to live there for six months.” Lucas narrowed his eyes, a flash of irritation crossing his usually impassive face. “I haven’t spoken to my father in years. Why would he think I’d want anything to do with his estate now?” The attorney shifted uncomfortably, clearly unused to dealing with someone as powerful as Lucas. “Your father… well, he was a complicated man. He believed this would be a way for you to reconnect with your roots.” Lucas almost laughed. Roots? He had no roots. His father had seen to that, sending him off to boarding schools and business academies, grooming him for a life that Lucas had, ironically, surpassed. He’d built his empire without his father’s help, and now the old man wanted him to play house in some forgotten estate? “What exactly is this estate?” Lucas asked, his voice clipped. He knew very little about his family’s history, save for the fact that it was old money, dating back generations. The Drakes were one of those families that once meant something in society—a name that commanded respect. But Lucas had never cared for such things. His fortune was new money, hard-earned and self-made. The attorney opened the folder and passed Lucas a photograph. It was of a sprawling manor, its grand façade partially obscured by the overgrowth of time. The estate sat on a vast stretch of land, surrounded by dense woods and distant mountains. It was beautiful in a haunting, forgotten way, a relic of a bygone era. “This is Ravenswood Estate,” the attorney said. “It’s been in your family for over a century. Your father… he spent a great deal of time there after your mother passed away.” Lucas’s gaze lingered on the photograph. There was something about the place that stirred a distant memory, but it was fleeting, slipping away before he could grasp it. He pushed the feeling aside, focusing instead on the facts. “And what happens if I don’t comply with the stipulation?” Lucas asked, though he already knew the answer. “The estate, along with its assets, will be donated to the Historical Society,” the attorney replied. “Your father was very clear on that point.” Lucas leaned back in his chair, considering his options. The estate was worth a considerable sum, but more than that, it represented something he wasn’t willing to let go—his father’s final attempt to control him from beyond the grave. Lucas had spent his entire life proving he didn’t need his father, that he was capable of creating something on his own terms. To walk away from this would be to admit defeat, and Lucas Drake never admitted defeat. “I’ll do it,” Lucas said finally, his tone leaving no room for argument. The attorney nodded, clearly relieved. “There is one more thing,” the attorney added, hesitating slightly. “The estate is currently managed by a caretaker. Her name is Emily Monroe. She’s been looking after the place for the past five years. Your father trusted her implicitly.” Lucas frowned. A caretaker? He hadn’t expected this. He had assumed the estate would be empty, a relic waiting to be brought back to life—or sold off in pieces. But a caretaker meant someone with a vested interest, someone who might stand in his way. “I see,” Lucas said, his voice neutral. “I’ll deal with her when I get there.” The attorney closed the folder and stood, signaling the end of the meeting. “I’ll make the necessary arrangements. The estate is ready for your arrival at any time.” Lucas stood as well, already thinking ahead to what this trip would mean for his business. He’d have to delegate more responsibilities to his executives, something he loathed doing. But six months wasn’t long in the grand scheme of things, and if it meant securing his inheritance—and proving his father wrong—then it was a small price to pay. As the attorney left, Lucas walked over to the window, the photograph of Ravenswood still in his hand. He studied it again, feeling that same strange tug of memory, but it was quickly overtaken by the cold resolve that had always driven him. Ravenswood Estate might have been his father’s domain, but now it was his. And Lucas Drake intended to make sure it stayed that way, no matter what—or who—stood in his way. --- This first chapter sets the stage for Lucas’s journey, introducing his character, the inheritance, and the initial conflict with the estate and its caretaker. It hints at the deeper mysteries and emotional challenges he’ll face as he embarks on this journey.
