CHAPTER ONE
Harper's POV
Even the moon goddess can feel my pain, a hurt that I can't ignore. My name is Harper, and this is what happened to me.
I was in the bathroom, taking a quick shower, when I heard growling coming from the living room. My father was the only one there, and he had a short temper.
I looked through the window and saw something that made my blood run cold. A wolf had attacked our home and was holding my father's lifeless body in its jaws. I gasped in shock and horror. My mother was hiding behind the curtains, crying quietly, too afraid to come out and face the wolf.
Adter what felt like forever, the wolf finally left, and I turned off the shower and ran to my mother's side. I hugged her tightly, grateful for her love and comfort.
She was a kind and caring person who always helped those in need. Even though I wasn't a strong wolf, she never criticized me. Instead, she prayed to the moon goddess to help me find a mate who would be perfect for me, someone who would make up for my weaknesses and appreciate my strengths.
My mother had one flaw: she was easily intimidated and would give in quickly, often unexpectedly. Time went by, and I started at a new high school.
Meanwhile, my mother met someone new and got married again. I soon found out that I would have a stepsister, since my stepfather had also lost his wife and was a single parent just like my mother.
At first, I wasn't happy about our new family situation, but seeing my mom happy with my stepdad made me feel better.
I started getting along with my stepsister Spencer, and we became close. But she didn't know about my struggles as a wolf until our stepfather Justin got us involved with the Crescent Wood pack.
He said he made his money from the pack and wanted us to take over his job, basically making us responsible for supporting the family while he enjoyed his retirement. I had no choice but to accept this new situation.
After a training exercise where we had to defend ourselves, Spencer started treating me differently. I had trouble transforming, and the other wolves made fun of me.
From that day on, Spencer wasn't friendly towards me anymore. She ignored me and spent time with the more powerful wolves instead, treating the weaker ones like they were nothing. I felt like I was the lowest in the pack, and Spencer's new behavior hurt my feelings.
We met the leader of the Crescent Wood pack, Jace, and his charming smile made me feel at ease. He treated me with kindness, even though I wasn't sure if he knew about my struggles as a wolf. He seemed to genuinely care for both me and Spencer. It was clear that he was close friends with my stepfather.
Things were going well until Spencer revealed my secret to our boss - that I was an Omega wolf. Jace was angry that she had betrayed my trust and punished us both by demoting us to maid duties, despite her high rank in the pack.
I had to do tasks that were difficult and dull because I was an Omega. Spencer got a better job, serving food to the Alpha, while I had to clean his room, mop the floors, and sweep the yard.
We'd come home separately every day, and our parents would try to fix our broken friendship, but it didn't work out. The tension between us was obvious, and it seemed like we'd never be friends again.
I thought my stepfather would eventually talk to me about my struggles as a wolf, but instead, he started treating me coldly and distantly. I knew right away that Spencer must have told him about my weakness. Wolves like Spencer, who are higher in rank, often look down on weaker wolves like me, and it seemed like my stepfather was now doing the same. I was born a weak wolf, and it seemed like I would always be treated like an outcast because of it.
| NOW |
We return to the pack for our daily tasks. Spencer goes to the kitchen, while I take the mop and head to Jace's room. Seeing Alpha Jace's strong chest makes me feel a little better and distracts me from my headaches. I bow my head slightly as I enter his room. Then, Spencer walks in, carrying a tray of food.
I look away, trying not to stare at the food. Spencer seems to want to talk to Jace about something else, but I stay quiet and keep cleaning. Jace finishes his call and starts eating, and I can't help but watch him. He usually eats in his room, not in the dining room like everyone else.
He offers me a glass of juice, but I say no, feeling unworthy. He offers it again and again, but I keep refusing.
"Do you think the glass is dirty because my lips touched it?" He asks, laughing, "Spencer, get Emily a glass of wine."
Spencer rolls her eyes and leaves the room, returning with the wine.
"Drink up," he says, "Do you drink wine?"
I answer, feeling embarrassed, "Yes, I do."
The glass shatters on the ground as everything starts to get fuzzy just minutes after I drink from it. I see Spencer moving around, but I feel myself losing consciousness. The next thing I know, my body crashes into something solid, and I feel a rush of wind on my skin. I try to open my eyes, but they feel heavy. I realize I'm in safe arms, but then I hear a door slam shut, and everything goes black.
I wake up the next morning and my eyes land on some royal medals in a big, fancy room. I sit up quickly and realize I'm half-naked. Where am I? I see a mirror near the door and go to check myself out. That's when I notice Alpha Jace standing in the corner. I'm scared I'll get in trouble, so I quickly open the door and rush out of the room, heading straight home.
