Whenever Mara asked whether she had ever had a sister, her mother always gave the same answer. She was an only child. At least, that is what Mara believed.Until the day her mother dies. While sorting through her mother’s belongings, Mara discovers an old photograph concealed inside a locked box. The image shows two young girls standing side by side. They have the same face. The same eyes. The same smile. One is Mara. The other is a girl Mara has never seen before. On the back of the photograph are four words that shatter everything she thought she knew:DON’T LET HIM FIND YOU.Mara does not understand the warning—until she meets Damien Blackwood.Billionaire CEO. Heir to one of the most powerful business empires in the country. A man whose name dominates magazine covers, financial reports, and society pages. And the moment Damien sees Mara, the color drains from his face.Because she looks exactly like the woman he has spent six years trying to find. The woman he believes murdered his younger brother.Damien does not accept Mara’s claims of innocence. To him, her face is proof enough.Mara, however, has never heard of his brother, has never met Damien before, and has no understanding of why this powerful stranger looks at her as though she personally destroyed his family.Their first encounter becomes a confrontation.Damien demands answers.Mara demands to be left alone.Neither gets what they want. When Damien discovers that Mara’s identity is tied to a long-buried secret within the Blackwood family, he decides to keep her close until he uncovers the truth.Mara refuses to become a captive in a billionaire’s world. But when mysterious threats begin to surface around her, she realizes someone else knows about the photograph—and that person is willing to do anything to keep the past buried. For the first time, Damien is forced to question everything he believed about the night his brother died.Mara was never meant to exist in his world. Her twin was supposed to be gone. And yet Mara keeps appearing in places she should not be, uncovering fragments of a past someone has spent years trying to erase. The deeper they investigate, the more dangerous the truth becomes.Mara discovers that her missing sister was not simply running from Damien’s family. She was investigating something.Something connected to Ethan Blackwood’s death.Something capable of destroying the Blackwood empire. And someone within the family has been protecting that secret ever since. As Damien and Mara are forced into an uneasy alliance, hatred begins to shift into something neither of them is prepared to acknowledge. He starts noticing the differences between Mara and the woman he once blamed. She begins to see the grief beneath his anger.Every argument draws them closer.Every secret drives them apart.Every moment of trust creates another opportunity for betrayal.Because Damien is concealing something from Mara as well.He knows more about her family than he is willing to reveal. And when Mara finally uncovers what he has hidden, the fragile trust between them shatters. Now she must decide whether the billionaire she once considered her greatest enemy is actually the only person capable of helping her uncover the truth—or whether he has been using her all along. But the most dangerous secret has not yet been revealed.Mara’s twin did not murder Ethan Blackwood. She was trying to expose the person who did.And six years ago, she disappeared for one reason:To keep Mara alive. Now the truth is beginning to surface. The person who destroyed Ethan’s life is still free. The person who framed Mara’s sister is still watching. And they know Mara has started asking questions. As enemies become reluctant allies—and reluctant allies become something far more dangerous—Mara and Damien must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice for the truth.Because uncovering the past could destroy both their families.Falling in love could destroy them even faster. And when Mara finally discovers the identity of the person who has been manipulating them all along, she will be forced to confront the most devastating truth of all:The greatest enemy in her life may not be the billionaire who hates her.It may be the person she trusted most.In a world built on money, power, lies, and inherited secrets, love is not meant to survive. But neither Mara nor Damien has ever been good at following the rules. And this time, uncovering the truth may cost them everything.

Chapter One: The photograph
Mara Quinn had always known her mother was hiding something. She had never imagined it was her own face. Rain lashed against the windows of the small apartment, blurring the city beyond into streaks of gray light and rain-slick streets. Mara stood in the center of her mother’s bedroom, staring at the half-packed boxes scattered around her. Her mother had been dead for three days. Three days since the hospital corridor had swallowed the last echo of her voice. Three days since Mara had become an orphan. She pressed her lips together and reached for another stack of clothing. “Where did you put it, Mom?” She was no longer certain what she was searching for. Her mother had left behind almost nothing—clothing, a few worn books, a handful of jewelry, and a lifetime of unanswered questions. Mara opened the bottom drawer of the wardrobe. Empty. She frowned. That drawer had always been locked. Always. Her fingers traced the wooden edges. Something clicked. She froze. A concealed compartment sat beneath the drawer. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” She pulled at it. A thin wooden panel lifted free. Inside was a black box. No larger than a book. Mara’s pulse quickened. She set it carefully on the bed. There was no lock. Only a strip of faded tape sealing the lid. Her mother’s handwriting was scrawled across it. Mara. She stared at her name. Her hands trembled slightly as she peeled the tape away. Inside lay a photograph. She picked it up. And stopped breathing. Two young girls stood beneath a tree. Both wore white dresses. Both had dark hair. Both shared the same eyes. The same nose. The same small scar above the left eyebrow. Mara’s grip tightened around the photograph. “No.” She turned it over. Writing covered the back. Her mother’s handwriting. You were never supposed to find this. Her stomach dropped. She read the next line. If you have, then I failed to protect you. Her eyes burned. She turned the photograph back over. One of the girls was unmistakably her. But the other— “Who are you?” The room had become unnaturally quiet. Mara looked back at the writing. There was one final line. Four words that drained the color from her face. DON’T LET HIM FIND YOU. A sharp knock struck the front door. Mara jolted. She quickly slipped the photograph into her pocket. Another knock. “Mara?” Her neighbor’s voice. She exhaled shakily. “Coming.” She moved quickly out of the bedroom. But she did not see the shadow across the street. A black car sat beneath the rain. Its windows were tinted. The occupant watched her apartment without moving. In his hand was a photograph of the same two girls. --- Six Hours Earlier Damien Blackwood closed the file. “She’s dead.” His attorney nodded. “Yes.” Damien leaned back in his chair. For six years, he had been searching for one woman. Six years of private investigators. Six years of false leads. Six years of unanswered questions. And now, the woman he believed had destroyed his family was allegedly dead. He should have felt relief. He did not. “What was her name?” The attorney hesitated. “Maya Quinn.” Damien’s jaw tightened. Maya. Even after all this time, the name still carried the weight of an unhealed wound. His younger brother had been twenty-four when he died. Ethan had trusted Maya. Damien had never understood why. Until the night Ethan was killed. Until the evidence surfaced. Until Maya disappeared. Everyone had told him the same thing. She was guilty. And Damien had believed them. Until now. He rose and walked to the window. Below him, Blackwood Tower illuminated the night. His empire. His father’s legacy. Everything Ethan had once been meant to inherit. Damien’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen. “Speak.” His head of security responded. “We found something.” Damien’s expression hardened. “What?” “A woman.” “Who?” “We don’t have a name yet.” “Then why are you calling me?” “Because she looks exactly like Maya Quinn.” Silence. Damien’s grip tightened around the phone. “Send me the photograph.” A message arrived seconds later. He opened it. His world stilled. The woman standing outside a small apartment building was not Maya. He knew that. But the face— The eyes— The scar above the eyebrow— It was impossible. “Where is she?” “Portland.” “Keep eyes on her.” “Should we approach?” “No.” Damien studied the image. Something was wrong. Maya had vanished six years ago. This woman looked younger. Uncertain. Completely unaware she was being watched. “Do not let her know we are there,” he said. “And if she moves?” “Follow her.” He ended the call. Zooming in on the image, he studied her face again. For a brief, impossible moment, Ethan’s face surfaced in his memory. His brother laughing. His brother bleeding. His brother’s final words. Don’t trust her. Damien closed his eyes. He had spent six years hunting a ghost. Now the ghost had a new face. Or perhaps— It had never been a ghost at all. --- The following morning, Mara stood outside her mother’s apartment with the photograph secured in her bag. She had not slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the two girls. She had searched online for answers. Nothing. No birth records. No archived family photos. No mention of a twin. Nothing. Her mother had erased an entire person from existence. Mara walked toward the bus stop. She did not notice the black car three vehicles behind her. She did not notice the man watching through tinted glass. But someone else did. A second vehicle pulled from the curb. Inside, a phone was raised. Mara’s photograph filled the screen. A message was typed beneath it. SHE FOUND THE BOX. The reply came almost instantly. THEN FIND HER BEFORE BLACKWOOD DOES. --- By noon, Mara had reached the city center. She entered a café, ordered coffee, and sat by the window. She removed the photograph from her bag. Again. Two girls. Two identical faces. She studied the one who was not her. “Who are you?” “That is a dangerous question.” Mara looked up. A man stood beside her table. Tall. Dark-haired. Impeccably dressed. His expression was so controlled it altered the atmosphere around him. Mara frowned. “Do I know you?” His gaze dropped to the photograph. Then returned to her face. For the first time, his composure fractured. His hand tightened at his side. “You.” Mara rose slowly. “Excuse me?” He looked at her as though he were seeing a ghost. “You have some nerve coming back.” Her brows drew together. “I think you have the wrong person.” His eyes hardened. “No.” He stepped closer. “I don’t.” Her pulse quickened. “Who are you?” His voice lowered. “Damien Blackwood.” The name meant nothing to her. But the way he looked at her suggested it should have. He glanced at the photograph again. “Where is she?” Mara swallowed. “Where is who?” His jaw tightened. “My brother’s murderer.” Mara stared at him. Then at the photograph. Then back at him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Damien leaned in slightly. Neither of them spoke for a moment. Then he said quietly, “Six years ago, you disappeared.” Mara’s expression went still. “I was sixteen.” Damien froze. “What?” “I was sixteen six years ago.” Something shifted in his expression. Doubt, for the first time, entered his eyes. Mara removed the photograph from her bag and held it between them. “I’ve never seen this girl before.” Damien looked at it. His expression changed. Mara noticed. “You know her.” He did not respond. “You know who she is.” Silence. Mara stepped closer. “Tell me.” Damien met her gaze. And for the first time in six years, he considered the possibility that he had been hunting the wrong woman. Mara folded the photograph. “Who is she?” His voice was quieter now. “Your sister.” The world seemed to tilt. “My what?” He held her gaze. “Your twin.” Mara’s lips parted. Before she could respond, her phone rang. Unknown number. She answered. “Hello?” Silence. Then a distorted voice whispered, “You should have left the box where you found it.” The call ended. Mara lowered the phone slowly. Damien was watching her. “What did they say?” She looked at him. For the first time, she did not see a stranger. She saw someone who might understand why her entire life had just unraveled. “They know about the photograph.” Damien’s expression hardened. “Then we are already too late.” Outside the café window, a black car started its engine. And neither of them noticed.
