Chapter One: The Wedding I Can't Remember
When Elena Hart opened her eyes, she knew something was wrong. Not because she was lying in a bed she had never seen before. Not because a diamond wedding ring glittered on her finger. But because... She couldn't remember yesterday. She bolted upright, her pulse hammering against her ribs. Morning sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, revealing an elegant beachfront villa overlooking a turquoise ocean. White curtains swayed in the breeze, carrying the scent of salt and lilies into the room. Lilies. For some reason, the fragrance made her chest tighten. "Where am I?" she whispered. Silence answered. The room was beautiful, almost painfully so. White rose petals were scattered across polished wooden floors. An expensive champagne bottle sat half-empty beside two crystal glasses. One had a faint lipstick stain. The other didn't. Someone had celebrated here. Someone had slept beside her. Her gaze drifted to the nightstand. A cream-colored envelope lay neatly beside the bed. Curiosity overcame fear. She opened it. Inside was an official marriage certificate. Bride: Elena Grace Hart. Groom: Adrian Wolfe. Her eyes stopped on the signatures. The groom's signature looked elegant. The bride's... was unmistakably hers. "No..." Her voice cracked. "This has to be fake." She grabbed her phone from the bedside table. The lock screen froze her in place. It showed her smiling beneath a flower-covered wedding arch, dressed in white, kissing a man in a black tuxedo. His face was perfectly clear. Dark hair. Warm smile. Grey eyes. A stranger. She had never seen him before. Her hands began to tremble. Notifications flooded her screen. Congratulations, Mrs Wolfe! Best wedding ever! Enjoy your honeymoon! Her calendar displayed today's event. Honeymoon – Day 2. Her banking app welcomed her. Joint Account Successfully Activated. Her emergency contact listed only one name. Husband: Adrian Wolfe. Everywhere she looked, the same impossible truth confronted her. She was married. Yet she couldn't remember falling in love. Couldn't remember saying I do. Couldn't even remember meeting the man who now carried her surname. Desperate for answers, she opened her photo gallery. Hundreds of photographs. Birthdays. Vacations. Christmas dinners. Engagement celebrations. They stretched back nearly two years. In every single one, Adrian looked at her as though she were the centre of his world. And in every single one... She looked just as deeply in love. Yet something felt disturbingly hollow. She searched her own face again, hoping to recognize the woman smiling back at her. Every expression seemed genuine, every touch effortless, every glance filled with affection. It was as though someone else's life had been stitched onto her memories, leaving behind a perfect story she couldn't remember living. She zoomed in on one photograph with trembling fingers. Adrian's arm circled her waist protectively while she laughed at something beyond the camera. It didn't look staged. It looked lived. Real. Her eyes searched every image for the smallest hint of fear or hesitation, but found only happiness. That frightened her more than anything else. Tears blurred her vision. "Who are you?" she whispered to the smiling man in the photographs. A sharp knock interrupted her. Three slow knocks. "Good morning, Mrs Wolfe," a hotel attendant called from outside. "Room service." Elena hesitated before opening the door. The young attendant smiled politely. "I hope you and Mr Wolfe enjoyed your wedding night." "My... husband?" "Yes, ma'am. Mr Adrian Wolfe checked out early this morning." She frowned. "He left?" The attendant nodded. "He said you needed your rest." Elena's stomach sank. "I don't remember him." The man's smile faded. He studied her face, then the wedding ring on her finger. For the briefest moment, genuine fear flashed across his eyes. "But..." he murmured. Before Elena could ask what he meant, he lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry. Forget I said anything." He turned and hurried down the corridor. "Wait!" Elena called. He didn't stop. Confused, she looked down. A small black gift box sat outside her door. She was certain it hadn't been there a moment ago. Slowly, she opened it. Inside lay a single white lily. Beneath it rested a handwritten card. Her breath caught as she read the message. Your husband doesn't exist. For several seconds, Elena simply stared. The words refused to make sense. A cold breeze drifted through the open balcony doors, making the white lily tremble inside the box. Her fingers tightened around the card. "No..." She looked at the marriage certificate lying on the bed. Then at the wedding ring on her finger. Then back at the note. "This is some kind of joke." It had to be. Someone had signed the certificate. Someone had taken hundreds of photographs. An entire hotel believed she had arrived with Adrian Wolfe. How could a husband not exist? Her pulse thundered in her ears. She flipped the card over, hoping to find a name, an explanation, anything. The back was blank. Nothing but thick cream paper. She examined the lily more closely. Its petals were flawless. Freshly cut. Tiny droplets of water still clung to the stem, as if it had been picked only minutes ago. A strange uneasiness settled over her. Why a lily? Again, that scent clawed at the edges of her mind. Not a memory exactly... More like a feeling. Rain. Cold pavement. Someone shouting her name. She gasped and staggered backward, grabbing the edge of the dresser to steady herself. For one impossible second, an image flashed across her mind. Headlights. Blinding white. A black SUV speeding toward her. Then darkness. The vision vanished as quickly as it had appeared. She squeezed her eyes shut. "What is happening to me?" Her breathing became uneven. If yesterday was missing... What else had she forgotten? She rushed into the bathroom and splashed cold water across her face. When she looked into the mirror, a pale woman stared back. Same green eyes. Same auburn hair. Yet she felt like she was looking at a stranger. Something caught her attention. Just beneath her left ear, half-hidden by her hair, was a faint bruise. She gently touched it. It was tender. As though someone had gripped her there. She frowned. Had it happened during the wedding? The honeymoon? Or... before? Another question surfaced. If Adrian had left early, why hadn't he called? Not one missed call. Not one message saying where he had gone. Not even a simple Good morning. She opened their chat history. Months of conversations filled the screen. Goodnight, beautiful. Can't wait to marry you. Forever starts tomorrow. I love you. Every message sounded warm. Natural. Affectionate. She scrolled upward faster. More messages. Voice notes. Shared photos. Plans for the future. Inside jokes she didn't understand. It was impossible to fake years of conversations. Unless... Her thumb froze over a voice message sent three nights earlier. She hesitated before pressing play. Static crackled through the speaker. Then Adrian's calm voice emerged. "If you're listening to this..." he said quietly, "...then something has gone terribly wrong." Elena stopped breathing. His voice continued. "It means you don't remember me." A chill spread through every inch of her body. He knew. He had known this would happen. Suddenly, the recording ended. Not because it was finished— Because someone had deleted the rest. Only eight seconds remained. Nothing else. No explanation. No goodbye. No clue where he had gone. Just as Elena tried replaying it, her phone vibrated violently in her hand. An unknown number. She answered without thinking. "Hello?" For several seconds, only silence. Then a woman's frightened whisper came through the line. "Elena..." The voice shook. "If you want to stay alive..." A loud crack interrupted her. The woman screamed. The call dissolved into harsh static. Before the line went dead, one final sentence slipped through— "Don't let Adrian find you."
