THE THING IN THE WOODS
I let out a heavy sigh as i place the last box on the floor and look around in awe. This is my house I can’t believe I got a house this nice for next to nothing. It’s a beautiful three story house. The interior is a mix between antique and gothic, but comes together perfectly. A huge chandelier hangs just as you walk in, and another hangs in the dining room. I’ve never even been in a house this big. Just last week I was staying in my cramped, moldy one bedroom trailer barely making ends meet. Come to find out, I apparently had a filthy rich grandfather that died and left me millions of dollars, along with this extravagant house and a few cars in a huge garage. “Whelp”, I sighed. Better start unpacking. I didn’t have much so everything was put up and organized pretty fast. The luxurious things in this house made my stuff look like I found it on the side of the street. I can’t wait to use that huge bathtub in the huge bathroom in my huge bedroom. I laughed to myself. “Thank you grandfather I never knew I had” I murmured, as I ran up to the room to change. I wanted to go for a walk to have a look around the property. Behind the house was a backyard bigger than I’ve ever seen. Beyond that was nothing but forest. It was breathtaking. I always wanted a forest in my backyard. I looked at in admiration first for a couple minutes and decided to go exploring. What’s more relaxing than a walk through nature? I took a step into the forest and automatically an electric feeling shot through my body. But the feeling went away as soon as it came and it had me wondering if I just imagined it. I stood there for a second.“hmm”. I shrugged my shoulders and continued into the forest. It was beautiful. The trees were the deepest shade of green. The birds were chirping, the sounds of nature filled the air. Wild flowers littered the forest floor. I kept walking, taking in the beauty of my surroundings. Even though I felt very relaxed I started to get this nagging feeling in the back of my mind. I just shook it off as nothing and continued my exploration. Looking around I realized I was very deep within the forest. I found a big fallen tree to sit on and just enjoyed the peacefulness and the sounds around me. I closed my eyes taking it all in. Then I heard it. *SNAP*. Oh s**t. What was that? Should I run? Don’t be silly Emerald, I thought to myself. It was probably just an animal. I closed my eyes again when suddenly it had gone deathly silent. No birds chirping, no little animals skittering about. Complete silence. My blood froze. I froze. *SNAP SNAP SNAP*..*growl* “Nope. uh uh. No no no no” I chanted as I started running. I’ve watched scary movies and my ass is getting the hell outta here. Adios beasty. I ran hard regretting walking so far into the woods. I could hear it running behind me. I’m so scared. Branches are breaking and the ground is shaking with the force of its feet. Lord I hope it’s a bear. I scolded myself. Of course it has to be a bear, what else would it be? How damn far did I go into the woods? I feel like I’ve been running forever. My lungs are starting to burn but adrenaline is keeping me going. “Come to me” I hear a deep voice whisper. Who the hell was that? Keep running don’t stop I told myself. “Come to me” I hear the whisper again, but this time louder. I don’t stop running though. Who is that? What is that? “COME TO ME” the voice is angry now. I hear a snarl and feet hitting the ground hard, making the ground shake. It’s getting closer. Fear encased my entire body. I could hear its ragged breathing behind me. And what’s with the snarling? My heart beat almost out of my chest. I’ve never ran so fast in my life. “Don’t look back Don’t look back” I chanted over and over. Relief filled me as I finally see my house and ran through the backyard and up the steps and almost broke the door down getting in. Breathing hard I slammed the lock into place. I took off up the stairs to my room and hid in the closet under a bunch of blankets. I stayed completely silent listening for the thing to come crashing through the house. I sat there for another half hour and heard nothing. Should I go down there? What if it got in and it’s waiting for me to come out? I can’t sit in here forever so I finally decided. I’m going to go check. My legs started shaking once I hit the stairs. I went down slowly peeking around the corner into the kitchen, then made my way to the back door. With a deep breath I looked out of back door window. I looked out at the forest for several minutes but saw nothing. What the hell? Whatever it was is gone now. But now there’s another problem. There’s no way in hell I’m stepping foot outside of this house. With a sigh I sat on the floor against the door. Maybe I’m going crazy. While I was sitting there thinking about what the heck just happened I realized something I didn’t before. I have a neighbor. Their house is not that close but not far enough to wear I can’t see it. It’s even bigger than my house. How did I not notice it before? Oh well. I still don’t want to get up off the floor. I don’t know how to feel about what happened or what to think about the thing in the woods.
