chapter one // driftwood.
THE TIDES WERE HIGH AND FEROCIOUS, the warning of nature beholds the beauty underneath the clear waters of the beautiful ocean. Numerous thunders roared on the vast bromous sky, bodies of inspectors flinching time to time as their flashlight produce a large luminescent ray that helped them to search through the ruins of the island, ashen woods, and barren soil; there was no hint of life yet a presence of an unknown lingers on the surrounding, heavy and near the brink of its end. Because of the harsh storm, they were burdened to see through the thick fog of the torrents, rushing forth in a mob-like roar towards the dry, unyielding ground. The drizzle turned into a heavy downpour, opting for the members of a renowned search and rescue squad to fasten their pace and see if there's a person around that might belong to their kind. Minutes passed and there was no sign of a body on the masses of ruins, they were nearly losing interest with their quests because of the futile attempts of search around the shore of the dead island. But a young man in his early twenties rushed towards the violent waves of the sea upon seeing driftwood afloat on the turbulent of the dark water, he swam with both arms extended far and wide to have full coverage and reach the exact location of the wood. He gasped, realizing someone was tiredly clinging on one of the branches of the dead tree, he watched how the wind would blow the driftwood to the shore- as though it has its own thinking, fulfilling the wishes of the bright stars to bring the person to shore and survive the raging anger of the sea. With all of the energy on every part of his body, he pushed himself forward and moved flawlessly through the water, making small waves behind his large posterior whilst adjusting his vision on the dark waves.  Flashes of lightning looked like skeletal fingers of incandescence reaching down to rap the surface of the water and it was upon him on an instant, pushing his body to the side to avoid the ripples of the electricity before turning his bodysuit into thick slabs of anti-static materials, saving him from the shock before grabbing one of the sections of the driftwood. Reaching it, he pushed his body upwards to swallow a large quantity of air before coughing sonorously, he looked on his left and saw the closer visage of the person asleep on the washed piece of creation; a young woman, possibly in her sixteenth year on the world with perfectly framed face and shivering carmine lips, her tanned skin was littered with purple contusions and ecchymosis. It was horrendous, to watch her thin and frail body shiver because of the cold weather, he reached for her hand and grabbed it softly, checking if there was still a hint of life- and when he managed to spot a beat along with the tensed and broken bundles of nerves he screamed. "Captain Hugo! I have it!"  Garnering the attention of the remaining members of the Search Party, they awoke from their reverie and run forth towards the shore. The mentioned man stood still on the grains of the plain, watching as all of his subordinates panic and collect the pair floating on the waters. He extinguished the blaze of the stick of cancer that was once resting on his thin but full lips, the tip of his lingua wet enough to cover the buds and ease down the stinging pain brought by the warmth of the cigarette. He threw it on the ground, blowing out the rest of the smoke outside his system before light yellow mists swirled around his slender fingers, raising it up on the sky before firing a beam of energy that lighted up the whole dark environment; helping the members to have a proper vision on the dark while surging vigor partially stunned his nervures through a tingling sensation.  The men managed to deliver the driftwood on the shore, the young man breathed heavily before swallowing the lump on his throat; a sympathetic feeling numbing the pain his skin was feeling before kneeling on the ground to once again check the pulse of the young girl. He looked at his Captain, eyes wide with fright. His skin had turned a pale color, his hair sticking to his forehead as saltine bullets dripped down. Tilting his head slowly, he rested his eyes toward the dark vengeful sky, "It's... Her heartbeat is slowing down! We've got to bring her to the Infirmary or else, we'll lose her." "Do you sense her aura?" Hugo Demafiles, a man in his late twenties asked, fully studying the broken visage of the young girl lying on top of the driftwood with unbearable emotion in his eyes. He smirked, shaking his head a little before turning his back away from the members of the group, "She's a normal human, there's no point in saving her. She's an outsider and you know the rules." His voice was bound with pure taunt and discernible brickbat, "Leave her there." "For once can we ignore the rules and give her the privilege to be an exception? She's too young, look at these bruises; this is a hallmark of continuous physical abuse. Come on, Captain, have mercy." The young man begged, in the process of reflecting a life- in which he's on her young shoes, abhorrent feeling swamping past his barricades whilst the unhinged sentiment didn't have any outlet besides his dark brooding eyes.  The man huffed in derision, eyes gazing on the soaked members of his team before swallowing all of the pride he has on his broad chest, perhaps the young man was right; he was never the one to acknowledge physical abuse as he was raised by the finest warriors of Mactan, he is to respect woman no matter what their origin is, and a child from the unknown isn't an exception.  "Prepare the jet for underwater take off, we are to save a young child's life."  The young man immediately scurried off his feet, gently cradling the young woman his firm arms whilst few members of the team tailed behind his posterior with wary gazes boring onto their anxious eyes. The squall has not yet finished its rumbles, the luminosity of the light on the vast sky still giving sumptuous but perilous scenery as the downpour only worsened that hindered them to fully navigate on the soggy ground. They reached a large jet, oftentimes viewed as warcraft by the public due to its weaponry; installed and designed by one of the finest engineers their society has. It was dyed beautifully in pitch black, to enhance the camouflage directory and avian warfare. The aircraft is one of their most advance technology-related vehicles; fueled by natural energy that came from an unknown source, the jet can suspend itself in the air for months as long as it has a skilled pilot in the cockpit, systems always employed for safety and weather measurement. A noticeable insignia was carved on the jet's nose embellished with red and golden hues that screamed luxury and pride.  It's a beautiful ride.  The bad weather affected the atmosphere, obstructing the avian craft to momentarily settle on an underwater takeoff, the people inside the cargo sat on their respective seats before mumbling a short prayer to the sky, speaking to existence their prized safety before breathing heavily. When the plane lifts in the air, the front expedites forward to the sea; the whirring sound from the warm engines became vociferous whilst the passengers were pushed on their seats. The young man stood two meters away from the room where he had stabilized the young woman from the brink of loss, shortly electrifying her weak pulse to stable the heart's beat before applying necessary equipment to her body to elongate her rope for a few more hours before they can reach their exact destination.  He watched as the rain had a full-blown tantrum outside the window, thrashing around like an angry feline, thumping the earth and snarling at the waves that didn't bend to argue with its fury. Strong wind peeled back the jet's roof like the bark of an orange but the metal wasn't flung away from its spirals for it was held on its foundation in absolute resolute. Huge raindrops and the loudness of them hitting the roof and the wings like an orchestra of percussion but was canceled by the sound tools used on the cover of the jet to reduce the setting noises on the encompassing area, alleviating the tension inside the cargo whilst two aviators focus on their one work, to fly without any blunders. "Good evening, team. This is Captain Lily speaking, I'd like to say few things to calm down all of your minds as we are about to submerge underwater with Albatross Flight L-55. We are currently cruising at an altitude of 15,000 feet with an airspeed of 400 miles per hour, the time is 11:48 in the evening. The weather isn't good but we'll manage as long as all of you trust me, we are expecting to land in Tribbu del Cancero in forty minutes behind our schedule. I'll talk to you again before we reach our destination. Until then, sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the flight." A soft and feminine voice spoke through the jet's speaker, amplifying they are ready to get away from the barren island composed of remnants of the dark past of the Philippines.  "How's the girl?" Hugo asked with false concern as he stood a few meters away from the open cockpit, the two licensed pilots taking down the jet to the surface of the water steadily without disrupting the peace of the paragravity, which made them stood still and move freely on the down rocketing aircraft. "Wish for the Gods to hold her heart." "She's fine." The young man answered modestly, his tone rough and seems to be undecided in a lot of things. He stared at the spectacle in front of him, the sea was very clear, and despite the barren island nearby; the coral reefs were filled with diverse species of marine animals. Almost eighty feet tall stalks of kelp littered on the seafloor, copious fishes pursuing krills and crustaceans for sustenance,  and it was amusing to watch. "I sent a message to the Infirmary Department and they are already preparing for our arrival, she will be immediately checked by the Headmistress herself." "Does she know the girl doesn't belong to our kind?" "Is it really important whether she belongs to our group or not? The Headmistress isn't the type of woman to involve racial matters in every life-threatening circumstance, and she's more than elated to allow an outsider with wide arms to the land she treats as her home."   Hugo's cynical cachinnations reverberated in the room, prompting the members of the team to peak on the open door with genuine curiosity, it is uncommon for them to hear the man laugh in various situations because he's ever been composed and level headed notwithstanding being haughty and self-assured. His laughs were contagious and resembled more like an ominous cackle than an expression of amusement. Crossing his arms over his stomach in an endeavor to haul his breath, the young man on his left was rather not pleased with his response; there was nothing humorous in a life-threatening situation, once's life is crucial as it absolutely influences the flow of time and creation. And to laugh at someone's malignant situation is an act of disrespect, no matter how grave the history of the reason as to why someone's life is progressing from time to time.  "Even if that girl is treated, she'll never last long in our environment," Hugo exclaimed, shifting his weight to turn at the young man and smirked at him wickedly as though he is the first one to know an outsider will never live up to the expectations of his kind, "Wanna know why?" The young man stayed silent, eyes diverted on the soles of his feet whilst fingers on his back fiddled with one another in nervousness. The older man was ridiculing him, slowly manipulating his perception regarding people who aren't like them; people who were born in a world where no discrimination and bigotry precedes them. He was raised to believe his kind is superior, in numerous levels of physical, emotional, and intellectual intelligence- they are far more advanced, genetically, and also in military and technology. They could surmount worlds and never shed a sweat, thus a stereotype of people who were born normal doesn't belong amongst them; extraordinary and a singularity. The girl isn't an exception to their tight beliefs and culture, as a matter of fact, he could've left her on the driftwood- floating on the endless water of the untamed sea, allowing the flame of her destiny to dwindle into nothingness but he didn't, because he felt a connection with her; nothing too romantic, perhaps a calling, from the fates itself. She's different and he will be damned if he won't listen to his primal instincts. "Because people like her deems us savages; monsters, beasts that would only cause destruction to their little pathetic society. She'll never fit in, Adama, this is a childish will-o'-the-wisp dream, unreachable and laughable." His eyes narrowed and his teeth clenched together, there was recognizable bitterness on his vigorous hazel eyes; something the young man knew correlates to the Captain's arduous past. "We'll never know the outcome unless a variant is thrust into the mosh pit full of savages." Adama, a young man with afro-textured hair and skin comparable to the sweet cocoa was calm and remote. His tall stature fought with his superior, orbs rich in the pigments of seafoam shone behind square-framed glasses that kept slipping down his long aquiline nose from facing downwards. A narrow, thin, gentle face with prominent cheekbones and chin, his full and plump lips were pulled into a sheepish smirk.  "Call me when we're near our home, I'll go check on her. It's never too late, she might slip away if I don't monitor her." Hugo didn't say anything, the man was lost in his thoughts whilst firmly looking at the aquatic visages that were displayed on the large window of the cockpit. Their speed is normal and they remain invisible from the aquatic creatures after the camouflage, the auto invisibility panels were made to protect the beings from any frays and he was exhilarated to see the beauty of the marine sanctuary, easing his mind as he leaned on the wall of the control flat. He felt rather cold, lips partially shivering as he tilted his head upward before sealing his eyes close before untangling the irate questions and hunches inside his consciousness. The jet was steady upon the harsh tide, the nose of the technological craft creating a torrent of fumes, awake mammals watching as it swooped past numerous tall marine rocks whilst the auto invisibility panel was put down by Captain Lily. She seized the yoke tighter and focused on how she maneuvers their ride to a large orbicular metal ring that spans about sixty-seven meters tall and 50 feet wide, it was a portal to an unknown world- where a young heart's fantasies live. The circular ore had abundant algae on its exterior yet it still could exhibit the beauty of the environment, stunning antiquated markings littering on the metal whilst few strands of sea plants hung on the summit. There are four sculptures in between the two sides of the circle; two females and two males. They were covered in green rockweed, peculiar luminescent stones trapped in the center of the sculptures temples, the most mystical thing was; there's a figure of a bird with a distinctive wing sitting on top of the ore, it was made of gold that seems to haven't had rust even in various eras of being built, a definite antiquarian crystal-shaped vermillion stone also resting on its temple, incandescent bright light whilst whirls of waves appeared on the large metal circle.  "Unveil the mystery, lead me to the path of fantasy."  Lily took a deep breath, glancing on her co-pilot as she drove the jet towards the ring; where obscure bubbles and waves inhabit the center space, causing the fishes nearby to stay still on their position due to its resolute water force. She grinned the moment the nose of the jet get past through the portal. She pushed the craft further until a new scenery welcomed them; a low, waning gibbous moon hovered tenuously in the twilight firmament, bestowing a very dim light upon the land that floats in a large body of water; consisting of shades of clear azure and a fine cast of alabaster on the white sand shore. The island is big, even in the sky- the members of the crew who were looking through the glass grinned joyously after seeing the tall infrastructures their ancestors made. It was all viridescent, sepia, and lapis lazuli that completed the whole archipelago. Rich in terra firma, the land was different from the green paradise of any country from the outside world. The island was more than a home to hundreds and thousands of people; it's the essence of their kind. Where numerous stories and adventures unfolded, a place wherein once's lost heart could be found. It's a surreptitious sanctuary their kind would like to keep away from the clutches of corruption, they would rather become territorial and selfish than let the foreigns destroy what rightfully belongs to them.  "We're home," Captain Lily softy announced as her eyes partially irrigated, the comfort of the island made her skin ticklish as they landed softly on a pad, where numerous people stood adjacently in an act of warm welcoming. She breathed, removing the headphone on her ears before giving her co-pilot  a high five, "Come on, boys, time to wrap up." A young woman in her late twenties stood still on the concreted track notwithstanding the sonorous vibrations of the jet's whirring engine, her face was devoid of emotion and it was only stoicism that could be seen on her enticing eyes. Her tall stature was swallowed by the luminous rays of the night, the hem of her peach tinted midnight dress swung back and forth whilst her palms were attached to one another to soothe down the emotions arising from the pit of her stomach, her breathing hobbled— eyes widening a little the moment the back door of the large aircraft was brought down by its system, the ramp being banged by the loud footsteps of the members of Anagolay Search and Rescue Operative, all of them donned with relieved smiles. She waited on the side, watching as the members of the Team were welcomed home by their lovers and partners, warm praises being tossed around the thick air as they mumbled small gratitude to the Heavens, who didn't stray away from monitoring the safety of their loved ones from the avenging storm outside of their realm. She clicked her tongue in impulse, finding it rather odd for her intimate friends and favored student to come down late. And the moment Hugo marched down the large silver ramp, the soles of her feet moved on its own as the sunken expression on her youthful face dispersed on the thin air— tampered with mirth and exuberance as she fastened her pace before quickly throwing her small arms around the lower abdomen of her male friend. The embrace was warm and filled with comfort, cherishing every drop of the familial feeling, she nestled her nose on his exposed neck. He was stunned from the sudden appearance of the woman, the display of affection made his skin ticklish for unknown reason but nonetheless reciprocated the same energy by wrapping his arms around her dainty waist. The ever cold and arrogant Hugo Dimafiles was hugging the woman everyone sees in high regards, his sudden movement garnered attention from his comrades as they immediately sent him a teasing simper, forgetting he's superior to them. Even Adama and Lily donned smug smirks, prompting him to refract the light of the Luna somewhere else as their intact bodies seemingly disappeared from the naked eye. He tightened his embrace, letting her inhale the intoxicating and masculine scent he has whilst the gentle flesh of his mouth stopped on her temple, leaving a chaste kiss; reminding her, he's with her. "I'm home, Seville," He mumbled softly, the pad of his fingers playing with the soft curls of her mahogany-hued tresses, he sighed, causing his bosom to vibrate tremendously whilst she looked at him with those peculiar rich sunflower eyes. He could perceive it even in the dark night, the little grazes of tiredness creeping up from the bottom of her sclera near the stunning irises, he couldn't help but swing his head in distress, "You shouldn't have stayed late." "Couldn't help it, a child's life is far more important than a nine hours rest. Where is she, by the way? I have to tend her, it's already late, the Anethum Tonic will wary off any moment now, her medication must be prioritized regardless her status in our society, I hope you know that Hugo," She smiled at him softly, she fixed the collar of his dark trench coat before snapping her fingers, the reflecting barrier that surrounds them slowly disappearing on this air whilst the cold wind kissed their skin. "The Elders and Tribe Leaders wouldn't like this, Seville," He hissed on her ear, the soft flesh of his mouth ghosting on the shell of her left ear that made her body shiver in shock and a tinge of anticipation, She looked away when her pilot of a friend smirked at her slyly. She pushed him a little, ignoring the prominent inflammation on her cheeks, "I do not care, we have jurisdiction over them and you know I am not the one to ultimately use their power for outlaw tenacities... But- if a child's safety is gambled on the game of Death, I will do everything to cut the chase. I'm not only a Headmistress, I rule the court, whether they decline the plan I have in my mind, the final choice will still be made by me and not by their opinions; which I definitely agree would only fuel the rift between us and normal humans." "You care too much about them," Hugo pressed, "It will be your downfall someday." Seville laughed lowly, dismissing his empty threat after foreseeing what the eventuality has for her- she's ahead of her knowledge and time, she wouldn't have been the Headmistress at a juvenile age if it wasn't for her natural care about Life. She's the ideal woman, the preponderance of their population would say, she's the epitome of maternity and selfless agape; the fruit of her childhood trials and understanding. "I do not fear my downfall, I fear what I can do for people's well-being but will be withheld by old beliefs and opinions. I'd rather die caring on every form of life than ignore my duty and glorious purpose in life." "As expected from the wise and morally righteous Headmistress," Adama meddled whilst he stood beside his Captain, ignoring the unbearing gaze of anger from the man as he smiled at the older woman. "This is why you're my favorite amongst them." "You flatter me too much, son," Seville chortled, her tender palms held the young African man's stiff cheeks before placing a kiss on his forehead. "You did the right thing." "I know, Headmistress," Adama susurrated, slowly nodding his head before chewing the soft flesh of his bottom lip. Allowing his nervures to calm down and accept the gratitude by the older woman, he wasn't nervous per se but he wasn't calm either. Because of his biased judgments, a certain congregation will be held that will still determine whether the young girl would be permitted to live and traverse the enchanting woods their own world have or be executed through the harsh punishment of the wicked gallows. Yet he persevered, the Headmistress secured her words; she doesn't have any reason to lie, she's a good woman. She can fix the matters that are out of his governance as the Head Student, everything will be better and he just needs to strengthen his hope for the dreams he has on his mind. "I hope it's okay if I pass you the burden I created myself." "Worry about nothing, the complications will be fixed tomorrow morning. But in the meantime, I want you to secure the safety of the girl once we reached the Infirmary Department, some members of the Tribe might pay a visit to her and assess what her heart has while she's unconscious, I don't want that." Seville knew the Tribe Leader would do the riskiest thing just to ensure the safety of everyone from an Outsider since they are deemed hunters of their kind after the Second World War, it's rather immoral if the laws are see-through by the perceptive minds of Sages; their kind do not wish a horrendous treatment yet they do the same thing towards the people they considerably regard as Nemesis. "Bring her to the Private Room." "But Headmistress, that room is reserved for people with high statuses." "I don't care, bring her there so the medication would be reserved and peaceful. I can do my work better if the surrounding is silent, I will contact Aurora to come forth and you and Hugo will make sure the premises are off-limits from non-permitted Doctors and Nurses." She firmly said, "Do you understand me, Adama?" "Yes, Headmistress." She nodded vehemently, assured by his words whilst her body was positioned to the front. She looked past her shoulders, giving them a signal as Hugo could only nod in force agreement, "Now go, there's no time to dilly-dallying." Adama bid his farewell and Hugo gave her a small pat on the shoulder before leaving, Seville stood with Lily on the runway, her fists clenching in anticipation and shock as she watched a young girl being hauled by the paramedics she had requested after leaving the comfort of her Private Library. They were gentle and careful; afraid to worsen the damned situation of the girl as they pushed the gurney towards the large containment ship designed for medical emergencies. She tensed momentarily after seeing the Head Paramedic looked in her direction, causing her feet to drag roughly on the concreted pavement whilst Lily soothed her back after they reached the stretcher. Seville's right palm incandescent vibrant yellow hues that could be considered near the shade of aureate, the energy emitting warmness that made everyone who surrounds them close their eyes to cherish the feeling; genuine and full of divinity, Seville's abilities exceeds those primordial Babaylans they included on the Book of Epochs. Her abilities transcend even in the borders of Life and Death, something a Sybil could only do as the properties and laws of Life is unbendable. The flow of energy continued, seeping through the thick layers of the girl's skin, her veins glowing from the natural process of firsthand healing, her bosom arising from the surface of the gurney before violently coughing- releasing the thick amount of seawater from her lungs. Seville felt her skin go cold from the sudden movement of the girl, halting the energy to fully envelop the body full of contusions, she stopped; contemplating whether continue the firsthand medication or just resume it at the Infirmary Department that is just twenty minutes away from Tribbu del Cancro's Private Airport. "The water should've destroyed her lungs with that amount," Lily commented as she watched the liquid cascade down the ground, she looked at her friend with a tinge of worry on her peculiar blue eyes, "This is rather weird." "It is," Seville took a moment as she watched the lid of the young girl's eyes slowly lift itself and stare at her physique, she leaned down a little until her lips met with the cold temple of the half-wake child, "Close your eyes once again, dear." It wasn't a command nor a request, a simple sentence that held a lot of comfort and genuine worry whilst the stars' luminescence didn't dwindle in the frigid dark obscurity. Seville suddenly shifted her weight and looked at one of the trees of the runway's side road, her eyes gleaming in confusion as she heard small rusts of the wind even in the far distance. She breathed softly before looking back at her friend. There was unspoken consensus in between Seville and Lily, opting the paramedics to rush the girl to the Infirmary Department while they travel in another vehicle. They left the Airport in a rush manner and made sure there was no civilian lingering around to testify about what she'd said to her subordinates and it was a long night until the medication matters were fixed by Seville's own hands.
