Gala

Aces' words played on repeat in my head. “Act like you own the place.” I lifted my chin and pushed my shoulders back. A line was forming in front of the shiny golden doors at the end of the driveway. It was like a gateway to heaven except heaven was less sweet and getting in was a lot harder. The guests in line were wearing ball gowns and masks. What I was wearing was similar but instantly I felt underdressed. I pulled my red satin gloves up to my elbows, straightened the cowboy hat letting it sit just about the mask and smoothed the red mermaid tail dress I was wearing. It was time to put on a show. I hopped in line behind a short stout guy in a blue suit. I was an inch taller than him in heels so maybe we were the same height. The line surged forward and two muscular security officers in sunglasses and ties were checking tickets and the guest list turning people away or admitting them on into the gala. The guy in front of me stepped up to them. “Evander Walls.” Was this the Evander? I didn't have time for this. They moved the rope and he trotted in. I stepped up to the security guards and Ace winked at me from under his sunglasses “Name?” “Tiffany Taft.” The real security guard looked confuzzled. “I don't see your name Miss.” I fanned my face with my gloved hands and raised my voice two octaves. “What? Faith, I mean Miss darling is my very, very, very, very, best friend in the whole wide world!” I heaved my shoulders like I was sobbing uncontrollably. “Please!” I grabbed the suit jacket of the real guard. “Take me to her. I want to hear it from her!” he looked uncomfortably at Ace and he shook his head sadly. I released the security guard and fell on my back kicking my legs and punching the air “I knew it!” I cried. “She doesn't want to be my friend!” Ace scooped me up and threw me over his shoulder. “I'll take her out the back way.” he whispered, "No need to cause more of a scene.” The security guard nodded and as the door closed behind us around the corner of the building the other real security guard walked scratching his head. "I can't find my uniform anywhere."
