Abandoned
Isadora stared at her reflection in the mirror, barely recognizing herself. Her usually flawless makeup was a mess, lipstick smudged across her mouth and mascara running down her cheeks in uneven streaks. The strong, composed business person she prided herself on being seemed to have vanished. Instead, she looked more like a wounded lost animal, her heart shattered into pieces that no amount of self-assurance could mend.
Her fingers trembled as she wiped her cheek with a tissue, taking no care to fix her appearance, only to erase the evidence of her pain. What had happened in the past hour felt like a fever dream—except it wasn’t. The moment was all too real, and she could still hear the murmurs of shock and disbelief echoing in her mind.
A slow tear rolled down her cheek as she recalled the sequence of events. She had spent weeks preparing for this night. It was meant to be a defining moment, a major breakthrough in her career. The launch of her innovative technology platform was to establish her as a serious player in the industry. She had presented confidently, knowing her ideas were solid and her vision clear. The crowd had been attentive, including many business associates, investors, and tech moguls that could influence her future.
Max had stood by her side the entire time, his presence reassuring. He was, after all, not just her fiancé of three years, but also the host of the event—a powerful businessman with an empire under his name. She had leaned on him for support, trusted him with her vulnerabilities. They had shared dreams and ambitions, plans for the future both personally and professionally. She had thought they were in it together. Until tonight.
Max had taken the stage for an appreciation speech, his usual charisma on full display. He had thanked the attendees, praised Isadora’s vision, and commended her for the hard work she had put into her company. But then, in the final moments of his speech, he had turned to her, his face blank, his voice emotionless.
“And finally, before I close,” Max had said, pausing for a dramatic effect, “I want to take a moment to address something personal. I’ve come to the realization that Isadora and I are no longer aligned in our goals—both in business and in life. Effective immediately, our engagement is over.”
Isadora had felt the air leave her lungs. She had blinked, sure she had misheard. But the ripple of gasps throughout the room confirmed that everyone else had heard him too. The room had fallen into a stunned silence as Max continued, his words formal, detached, as though he were discussing a business contract rather than their three-year-long relationship.
“I believe this is best for both of us. I wish her the very best in all her future endeavours.”
He had walked off the stage without so much as looking at her.
The humiliation had been unbearable. Every eye in the room had turned to her, their sympathy more painful than the breakup itself. She had stood frozen, her mind unable to process what had just happened, her heart unable to withstand the blow. She had managed to excuse herself, slipping away to the ladies’ room where she now stood, staring at the woman Max had so effortlessly discarded.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. It was light, hesitant.
“Isadora? Are you in there?”
She recognized the voice immediately—Vivienne, her best friend and secretary, one of the three people who had been by her side through every step of her entrepreneurial journey. Isadora took a deep breath and opened the door.
Vivienne stepped inside, her face a mask of concern. “Oh, Isa...” She reached out to touch her arm. “Are you okay? What he did was... I can’t even—”
“Humiliating? Cruel?” Isadora’s voice cracked, but she forced herself to keep speaking. “He ended our relationship in front of everyone, Vivienne. I didn’t see it coming at all.”
“I don’t understand why he did it like that. Why not in private? And why tonight, of all nights?” Vivienne’s voice was full of disbelief.
“I have no idea.” Isadora leaned against the sink, her body suddenly heavy with exhaustion. “We’ve had our ups and downs, like any couple, but nothing like this. I thought we were doing fine.”
Vivienne frowned, her brows knitting together in frustration. “You deserve better than this. Whatever his reasons are, this wasn’t about you—it’s about him. No decent person handles something like this that way.”
“I just...” Isadora trailed off, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what to do next. Everything was tied to him—my business, my future. How do I move forward from this? In front of all those people? Investors I needed, people I was supposed to impress...” She buried her face in her hands.
“You’ve built this company from the ground up, Isa. You were amazing tonight before he did... that. Everyone knows that. They’re not going to write you off because Max decided to be an idiot.”
“But it’s not just about the company, Vi.” Isadora shook her head, her voice thick with unshed tears. “It’s everything. He was my future. How could I not have seen this coming?”
Vivienne sighed, stepping closer to give her friend a much-needed hug. “Maybe you didn’t see it because you trusted him. You believed in what you two had. There’s nothing wrong with that, Isa.”
Isadora closed her eyes, allowing herself to lean into the comfort of her friend’s embrace. For a few moments, neither of them spoke. The only sound in the room was the soft hum of the overhead lights.
Eventually, Isadora pulled away, her shoulders squaring slightly. “I can’t fall apart now. Not here. Not tonight.”
“You don’t have to act strong for everyone.” Vivienne said gently. “It’s okay to feel hurt.”
“I know,” Isadora said, though her voice carried a new edge of determination. “But I can’t let this break me. Not in front of them. He took enough from me tonight. He won’t take my dignity too.”
She wiped the last remnants of her ruined makeup from her face and glanced at her reflection one last time. Though the pain still lingered in her eyes, there was a spark of defiance in them too.
“I’m going to go back out there.”
Vivienne blinked in surprise. “Are you sure? You don’t have to face them right now.”
“I do.” Isadora took a deep breath, steadying herself. “This night isn’t just about Max, and I won’t let him turn it into his moment. I worked too hard for this to let him take it all away. I’ll be damned if I let his cruelty define my future.”
Vivienne gave her a proud smile. “Then I’ll be right there beside you.”
As they stepped out of the ladies’ room and made their way back into the event hall, Isadora felt the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes on her. Whispers rippled through the room, but she held her head high, refusing to show any sign of the heartbreak still throbbing inside her chest.
She knew the road ahead would be difficult, that picking up the pieces of her life would take time. But in that moment, as she stood before the crowd that had witnessed her humiliation, she made a silent promise to herself.
Max Drakos might have broken her heart, but he would never break her spirit.
