A new era

Ash waited with baited breath. As if in slow motion, the Elders all turned in union towards the trio. “You?” Elder Roy asked incredulously. “Yes” Ash responded, her voice unwavering. “I will be our packs Alpha. Alex is most skilled in fighting and has been leading our warrior training these last few years, quite successfully I might add. I have been studying our packs books and history, and under the supervision of Evan, the previous Gamma, have been leading the rebuild of our pack. All our ranked members, actually, the whole pack, is aware of my position as Alpha.” Ash’s words spilled out of her mouth. She had hoped she would be more eloquent, and less like a stubborn child, but she was unsure. She could feel Alex’s tension beside her also. Elder Clive studied the group before him, having not said anything up to this point. “Just so I have this clear: You are requesting the council to not only endorse your pack having an Alpha and Luna that are NOT a mated pair, but whose Luna is male going by the title of Lune, and Alpha is a she-wolf?” His gaze was questioning above his glasses. Elder Peter sputted down the bench. “Preposterous. You will insult us with this farce no longer. The answer is no!” He then looked down upon them with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. “Besides, this has nothing to do with who wants it, or who has done more training. The by-laws state that the eldest will be the next in-line. I'm sorry my dear, but you simply cannot be Alpha.” The other elders all nodded their agreement. Ash smiled widely at the council members, glad he had worded it that way. She looked at her twin, whose face showed a similar grin to her. “Elder Peter, we are humbled by your knowledge of pack lore and traditions” Alex spoke up, bowing his head. “And we are so grateful that you have quoted that for us today, so eloquently, enlightening the council as to how we are, indeed, following tradition in this instance.” Elder Peter’s smile faltered, with a look of panic flashing in his eyes. The other council members simply continued to look at Alex with confusion, and she could of swore she saw Elder Roy had the hint of a smile. Ash stepped forward, head held high. “What my younger brother is trying to say is that, as the eldest of our parents' children, I am next-in-line to be Alpha.” There was silence in the chamber, and Ash waited, holding her breath. “Ah, yes, well, it obviously refers to the first born male child… Alpha’s almost always have a male child first” Elder Peter explained, somewhat lamely. Ash continued to smile. “Yes, almost always. In this case, I was born first, so I will be Alpha”. Ash stood proudly, daring the council to disagree. There was a flash of fire in her eyes, which Elder Roy must of observed, and quickly intervened. He had heard that the Pearce twins were special, and had heard rumours about the women of their mothers bloodline. “How about a 6 month probation?” he suggested, winking at Ash before turning to the others. “Let's reconvene in 6 months, and see how they are fairing? If everything is going well, then we can consider approving their request. We really have no lawful means to deny this application outright, but we can, given the number of new ranked members, impose a probationary period”. Ash noted as Elder Peter grew red in the face. “6months? What will they prove in 6 months? No, no this will not do”. Ash stifled a giggle, thinking that Elder Peter was about to have a full-blown temper tantrum. Elder Blake looked thoughtfully at the group for a moment, then turned to Elder Roy. “How about then we request that the pack host the next meeting of the Alphas? That way we will be able to see how they are going in 2 months' time, as well as allow for other Alphas to assess the pack”. Elder Roy looked to the group, who all started to nod their heads. Elder Peter said nothing. “ Yes, what a splendid idea. What a great compromise.” Elder Roy said, looking back toward Ash. Ash remained silent and still, though she was seething inside; she did not want to ruin this for the pack. Alex spoke up. “We gratefully accept these conditions. We thank you again for your time today. We will not hold you up anymore.” Alex grabs Ash's hand and pulls her out of the room, with Sam following close behind them. As they walked down the hall, Ash started to pulled away from her brother, turning toward him. “We gratefully accept their conditions? What the hell Alex? A six month probation AND hosting the next Alpha meeting? You know as well as I that the pack house wont be ready for at least 3 months. We can't host the next alpha meeting!” Alex looked at her, and for a moment she saw her father’s stern face staring back at her. “You know as well as I that was the best we were going to get, so I accepted and ran, before they completely changed their minds”. Ash knew he was right, but didnt like it. They walked silently back to the cars, though Ash noticed a small spring in Sam’s step. ‘What are you so happy about?” she quizzed him. Sam looked over at Ash and his mate, and waggled his eyebrows. “You heard them, were hosting the next Alpha meeting. Its my time to shine; its party time!”
