Not the Luna?

He observed her eye’s widening slightly, before plastering a smile on her face and nodding. “That's one way of putting it” The woman took a long sip of her drink, whilst continuing to smirk. Javier looked around, his eyes resting on the 2 men that had been with the woman at the ball, before looking back at her. He noted that she had followed his gaze, and was now smiling fondly towards the darker hair man of the two. Javier was disappointed. Of course she was mated to one of them. He cleared his throat. “I take it you are the new Luna then”. Her head whipped around, her eyes sharp, searching his face. She exuded strength in addition to her beauty as she continued to study him, piercing him with her gaze. Javier and his wolf were disappointed, but still, this was an important conversation to maintain if they wanted to make an alliance with them. The woman appeared to have an internal conversation, before decide something, and spoke. “No, not me. I’m not really Luna material”. She looked down at her glass, and chuckled. Javier couldn't understand when his heart soared, as she gestured across the room, looking towards the 2 men again. “That honour belongs to Sam.” Javier turned back to look at her with renewed interest. “You are not the Alpha’s mate?” he asked. She continued to smile, her eyes sparkling, chuckling lightly, which was mesmerising to watch. “No,” she replied “The alpha doesnt have a mate yet. I work closely with the alpha though, supporting them. Funnily, you're not the only person who suggest I should be Luna. The Elders did suggest that it would be appropriate for me to be the pack Luna, given the circumstances.” She paused, swirling the last of her drink in her glass. “But as we told them, Sam really is better suited to the position”. She gestured again over to where the men were standing in a group, and took a sip of her drink. Javier could feel her watching him closely for his reaction, anticipating his response. He swallowed trying to calm himself. For whatever reason he knew he needed to make the right impression here. Javier took a moment to process what she said. His wolf was excited that she was not the alpha’s mate. But there was more to it than that, Javier knew. He tried to find the hidden meaning in her words. Sam, whoever she was, was going to be Luna, even though the alpha didnt have a mate. Why would the elders suggest she be Luna, if the alpha hadnt found thier mate? The elders were known to be traditionalists, to the point of a Luna position remaining vacant if the Alpha had no mate, even if the Alpha did have a sibling. Javier was finding it hard to think, there was something about this woman that was driving his wolf crazy, and he wouldn’t settle down. In turn , it was driving him crazy, trying to follow his cryptic conversation. He watched as she looked back over at the two men and smiled at them. The brunette one looked over and smiled towards her. He looked at ease, though Javier could tell the power emanating from him. He must have been the Alpha. Javier picked up his drink, looking back over at her. “When I saw you back at the Fall Ball, and then here again tonight, I just assumed you were the Alpha’s mate” he said, smiling. The woman chuckled, despite herself. It was a melodious sound, and Javier found himself wanting to hear it again. “No, no definitely not.” He turned back to look at her again, c*****g his head slightly to the left. “Im surprised, to say the least. But I don’t understand. If the Alpha is unmated, and you work so closely with the Alpha, surely you’re the obvious choice?” Javier wasn’t unsure what he was doing. It was a decision that was already decided, and in reality, didnt impact him in anyway. But his comment was true- the woman was captivating, for more than just her beauty. She would make a wonderful Luna. He would love to have a Luna like her. Panic flitted across the womans face, but disappeared quickly, making Javier wonder if he had imagined it. He looked around. ‘Where is she, your Luna, Sam was it?”. The woman took another sip of her drink, smiling slightly. ‘Right over there.”She gestured over to where the two men were standing again. He looked back at her quizzically. She sighed, gesturing again, looking at him like he was an i***t. Javier looked over again, and as if on cue, the darker haired man reached down and grabbed the other mans hand, bringing it to his mouth, kissing the back of it. Ash POV Despite herself, she found him intriguing. She watched as his mind seemed to work over time, looking at her brother and Sam. Realising she knew nothing about him, she turned and looked at him with an arched eyebrow. “And what about you then? I don’t even know your name” He turned to look at her, flashing her a charming smile. “I am Javier, second born of the Dark Moon pack”. Oh!” Ash exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. “That makes sense” She looked up at him, unconsciously committing his profile to memory. “I’ve heard good things about your pack; I’ve heard the incoming Alpha is really progressive. I’d love to hear more about them.” Javier smiled. “What’s your name?” Ash paused. ‘Ashtyn” she replied. She hadnt used her full name since her parents died, but felt compelled to share it with Javier. “Ashtyn” he tried out, her name sounding like magical coming from his lips. “Shall we walk and talk?” He gestured to the doors, and despite her better judgement, she allowed him to guide her out.
