CHAPTER ONE
AURELIA POV
The moonstone was never meant to be found, for centuries wolves fought wars over rumor of it, a relic said to give its owner absolute powers. Witches searched for it in secret, vampires stayed silent watching from the darkness, kingdoms had fallen because of this relic and bloodlines had been wiped out just for whispering its name. Everyone believed the Moonstone was hidden in the temple but the truth was far more dangerous, the Stone was not hidden in the temple, it was hidden inside me.
Tonight, the sanctuary was quiet but not empty, the soft rustling of leaves outside whispered secrets I have mastered long ago to ignore, long shadows danced like living things as candle light flashed across stone walls carved with old inscriptions. I cautiously walked slowly across the floor, feeling the cold marble beneath my bare feet, every breath served as a reminder of my inner strength and every step seemed like a promise. The moonstone had been part of my life long before I knew it existed. I could feel the slow warmth on my chest
Many believed the relic was buried beneath the altar of this sanctuary, they burned incense and whispered prayers to protect that lie, others believed I only guarded it, but no one knew the truth. The Moonstone had been inside me since the night I was born, it does not sit in the vault, It lives in my blood. For most of my life, I believed it was a powerful relic I was meant to protect. But as the years passed, I began to understand something else, the Stone was not simply mine to guard, It was part of me, my blood, my soul, my very existence was tied to something older than any kingdom.
I stopped in the center of the sanctuary and placed my hand on one of the glowing runes carved into the stone floor and the symbol reacted to my touch instantly, a faint silver light appeared beneath my fingertips, the power hummed softly, like a quiet heartbeat answering mine, I had learned how to control it, how to hide any signs of power that if exposed may cause mayhem or worse attract unwelcome attention. I survived by becoming silent and invisible in a world where freedom is a dangerous illusion. But tonight, Something felt different, the air inside the sanctuary shifted, pressed against the sanctuary doorway was a strong, controlled presence unlike any I have ever experienced.
My wolf Selara, stirred inside my mind, alert and watching, without looking, I already knew who it was, his scent, his energy and steady footsteps. Caius. His name had been whispered across territories long before his boots touched the chilly stone floor, the most feared collector in the territories, a wolf of unmatched strength and accuracy, he is known to only find and retrieve powerful objects. He was sent by the council who believed the moonstone could be claimed, controlled and possessed, to retrieve it like I was an object or a prize.
I straightened my shoulders and stood up straight but did not move when the sanctuary door slowly creaked open and Caius stepped inside, tall, calm but dangerous. He did not rush towards me, rather he moved slowly, almost respectfully and that surprised me. My wolf growled softly in my mind—not from fear, but at the interruption. Around his neck hung a medallion, a thin silver chain with a small charm resting against his chest, I could feel the energy inside it. The Cham was meant to control the Stone, to command it, but the moment he stepped closer to me the medallion reacted to me not him, It burned faintly against his skin.
I stayed perfectly still, giving him time to do the math and assessment. Underestimating me is always the first mistake most people make when approaching the sanctuary, they expect fear, weakness and submission but I showed none of it.
Caius stopped a few steps away from me, for a moment, neither of us spoke, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of ancient magic in the stone walls. “You are not what I expected.” he said finally, his voice was calm but cautious, I gave a small nod. This is not the moment to show power, It is about understanding each other. I could feel the Stone inside me beating slightly with my own heartbeat.
His wolf stirred beneath his control, I could feel it watching, studying me, ready to take control. “You’re cautious, what is your name?” he added. I said nothing, letting him believe he was in control. As he stepped closer, the medallion around his neck suddenly flare with silver light, a small wave of energy passed between us. It was brief but enough to confirm something important “the Stone was gradually awakening just enough to set the rules, it responds to me and the choices I make.
I lift my head slightly and meet his gaze. “Am Aurelia and it's not an object, you can't take it” I said calmly, the confidence in my voice clearly surprised him. For a brief moment, hesitation crossed his face, for the first time I saw fear from the most dangerous collector in the territories. The sanctuary fell into complete silence; the only sound in the silent night was the buzz of stone inside me. I knew this moment had changed everything, my quiet life, my careful isolation would no longer be enough. Soon the wolves, the witches, the hunters, and the vampire would come. Power attracts ambition, ambition attracts war and I can feel the pressure of it all on my chest but I wont back down.
“Then I guess we’ll see if you truly understand what you’re carrying.” He added calmly, this time his voice was calm. A strange tension filled the air between us, not fear but anticipation and Challenge, neither of us knew how this story would end. But one thing was certain, the Moonstone had chosen me and it would not stay hidden forever. Tonight was not the end, It was only the beginning.
