48 He loved a creature of habit. They were so much easier to keep an eye on. Predictable, too. You always knew where they’d be, and when. Even if their schedules tended to vary, like hers did, there were still plenty of elements he could rely on. Take now, for example. He watched as she got into her Volvo, reversed out onto her street, then turned onto Ashwell Road, driving past his car as she did so. He pulled his Ford Focus out onto the road a little way behind her, keeping enough distance but also ensuring she stayed well within his sight. Sometimes he’d pull out of a side road.
