Chapter 1
"Mommy!?" he called to her in a frantic voice tears streaming down his face. Heavy silence filled the room. He looks down at his phone. His little brother is on the other side of the screen wiping away tears. His heart squeezes and he manages to get out, "Ill call you back little brother." He hangs up and looks at her. He takes her hand, and notices her skin has already begun to go cold. "Won't be long now," a coarse gruff voice whispered into the darkness. He looks across his lifeless mother's body at the man sitting on the other side holding her hand. This man was older with white and black peppered hair, and mustache with a beard. His worn out tattered baseball cap sitting loosely on his head. "Kevin," his voice cracking, "Kevin she's gone" The round old man continues to stare at her holding her hand not acknowledging her son. "Won't be long now," he says again softly. Mitch stands up slowly, and walks across the hospital room. He takes out a phone and scrolls through his contacts. The phone only rings twice before his aunt answers. "She didnt give me enough time!" Mitchs shoulders slump and he chokes up. "I'm sorry Auntie." He finishes his phone call with her then looks to the nurse who has come in and is quietly standing at the computer next to Mitchs mother's bed. "I need to step out a moment. Please do not do her bath. I want to help." He walks out and down to the elevators. As Mitch reaches the glass double doors just before the elevator he feels it in his throat. He's been stuck in this hospital for 8 days without seeing his children and only seeing his wife a few days. He is starting to break apart. He reaches the elevator, and sighs as he takes out his phone. He knows he has to make the phone calls, but at this moment he just wants to disappear. He swipes his phone open and goes to the f*******: Messenger app. He clicks on it and scrolls to the name he's not ready to call. He clicks on 'Thomas Kennedy' and takes a deep breath. Thomas is his younger brother. He has blonde hair with hazel eyes. Thomas took after their mother in the sense that he really liked living life to the fullest and drugs. Thomas was currently living on the streets of Great Falls Montana. Confined to the state due to being on probation for stabbing a man. Thomas says its because the guy was threatening him. The news article read that Thomas told the cops it was because the man shortened him on his meth. Mitch knew to believe the article over Thomas. When Mitch had arrived at the hospital eight days ago his mother had money sent to Thomas money to leave the state to be at her bedside. Thomas instead used the money to get high. Mitch was furious at this. He had already had to be the only sibling to be there while she died even though she had four children. Mitch reaches the ninth floor and takes a deep breath. He taps the video call button. It ring for thirty seconds before Thomas answers. It's black and Mitch can see a sidewalk underneath of Thomas. His heart sinks as he gazes upon his brother sitting on the ground at four in the morning. Mitch steps out of the doors leading the outside and pulls out a smoke and lights it. "Thomas I'm sorry I have to tell you this but Mom passed away at about 3:47am," Mitchs voice cracks as he chokes the words out. Thomas takes a deep breath on the other side of the phone. "I'm sorry bro," he says in return. Mitch has so many things he wants to say to his brother. Anger rolls through his body and he can feel the same feeling he gets in his chest just before he explodes. He takes a deep breath. "Why couldn't you be here? Mom sent you money," Mitch manages to ask in a calm tone. "My baby mama took everything! She stole the money and used it for drugs!" replies Thomas. Mitch squints. "Thomas, she's the only one who used it for drugs?" he calmly asks. "Well no but it was only supposed to be a little bit and then I would've had enough for a ticket," replies Thomas. Mitch feels himself shake. 'You couldn't even put it down long enough to be here for our dying mother. The very same drug that killed her,' Mitch thinks. "Okay well I gotta let you go Thomas I gotta call the others," Mitch says. They say their goodbyes and hang up. Mitch looks around then pulls up his Aunts contact in his phone. He calls her and tells her that her sister has passed away. She has been a little shut down through the whole process and
