Shattered Trust
Mia’s POV
The familiar smell of antiseptic in the hospital hung thickly in the air like a cloud of rain, mingling with my rising anxiety. Doctor Rachael’s office was the same old way, stacked up with files and cold, the white walls blinding under the harsh rags of the fluorescent lights hanging loosely from the ceiling. I sat on the edge of the leather chair, my heart pounding hard against my chest as she handed me a brown envelope.
“Mia,” Doctor Rachael called softly, “I think it is best you see this for yourself.”
Her vague words sent a cold shiver slowly down my spine. I tore the envelope open, my wet fingers trembling as I unfolded the white paper inside. My eyes impatiently scanned the lines of the text, anxiety making the words swim around on the page. My breath caught in my throat as I saw what was written at the bottom of the page, and I felt as if the ground had been pulled out from under me.
Shock. Pure, unadulterated shock as I never expected to see what was written there, not even in my wildest imagination was I expecting such a report from the test result. My vision slowly got blurred as tears welled up in my eyes, and I could hear my pulse thundering in my ears.
Doctor Rachael cleared her throat noisily, a few moments later, breaking the deafening silence that had engulfed us, “Mia, I know this is so overwhelming for you, but I want you to know that this isn't a life-and-death situation,” she paused and stared down at me, “Fine, I know it is tough for what you least thought about to show up from the blues, but you should at least be thankful that it isn't what you initial thought it was.”
“Doctor Rachael,” I called in a croaked voice that trailed off as I choked on my tears.
“With time, things get better, and then it will come and go like it never happened before.”
“But then it would leave a Mark, like a stamp that would never be wiped away” I replied, managing to find my voice.
Allowing a broad smile spread across her lips, “And that is when the healing stage begins, you will come to love and accept it at the end”, Doctor Rachael said and paused for a little while again, “Regular hospital visits and medication will have you manage your condition, but you must take your emotional and mental health more seriously to avoid any further complication,” she continued.
Her words felt distant, like it was floating in the air. I nodded numbly, barely comprehending what she was saying. “You will need to come in for frequent check-ups, am I making any sense to you?” She asked, obviously noticing how my pain has drifted me away from reality. I nodded my head again.
“And like I said earlier, Mia, it is important you play your role in the game, which is taking care of yourself as we wouldn't be able to do that for you.”
“I would have that in mind,” I replied, my voice just above a whisper.
“This isn't the end, Mia. With time, you should be back to your normal life.”
I wiped the tears from my eyes, trying to steady my breathing in the process, “Thank you, Doctor Rachael,” I managed to say, sniffing.
I left her office in a daze, squeezing the envelope between my fingers, the weight of the news pressing down on me. As I stepped into the rowdy hallway with both medical workers and patients with their family members walking briskly around, the distinct smell of the hospital hit hard against my nose again, making me a bit nauseous.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Evan’s number, praying he would pick up his phone. He had promised to be here with me today, to see the doctor, but I haven’t seen or heard from him all day. The phone rang and rang like all the other times I have tried, but there was no answer. My frustration and the hurt that clouded my chest bubbled as I sent him another voicemail that was like the tenth one for the day.
Instead of going back home to cry myself to sleep, I decided to go over to his place, wanting to believe that he got caught up in something else and hadn't just abandoned me when I needed him the most. I got out of the hospital building, sucking in as much fresh air as I could to clear my system from the nauseous smell the hospital had filled it with, before flagging down a taxi.
The drive felt like an eternity to me, each minute of it stretching out painfully before me. When I finally arrived, I let myself in with the spare key he had given me. The house was quiet, which wasn't surprising, but was contrasting to the rage that was welling up with me.
I called out his name several times, but there was no response. As I approached the bedroom, I heard a muffled sound that made my stomach churn with fear. I pushed the door open in an alarming manner, and there were Evan and Lila, my best friend, tangled on the bed. Naked, Uncladded and completely oblivious of my presence.
“Come on baby, come on baby, wiggle that for daddy,” Evan's sassy voice rang around the room as Lila rode him earnestly as if her life depended on it.
For a moment, I stood frozen in the doorway, gripping tightly at the door knob, my mind struggling to process the betrayal that was unfolding before me. I felt my soul leaving my body, empty as I watched my world crumble from a distance. The doorknob snapped, jolting me back to reality, rage and hurt consumed me.
“Evan,” I yelled, storming into the room, “You promised that you would be there for me today! I told you about my fears, and how I didn’t understand myself anymore. The least thing you could have done was show your ugly face at the hospital,” I barked on, “But no, no, you decided to do what you know how to do best.”
Evan and Lila scrambled to cover themselves, their faces flushed with guilt and shock. But I didn’t care, my anger demanded an outlet, and I was going to grant it what it wanted. I started by grabbing the chair tucked into the vanity table and I threw it to the opposite wall and watched it shatter into pieces before going on to grabbing anything within my reach. I threw and smashed the expensive ornaments in the room, the mirror, the wine bottles they were feasting on, the glasses, everything shattered at my feet.
“You dare miss my appointment to be wrapped up in the hands of a woman, not just any woman, but my best friend?!” I screamed, my voice shaking with fury.
“You stayed behind to screw my best friend unbothered, and let me deal with my pain alone, Evan, how heartless can you be?” I hurled a flower vase against the wall and watched it break into several fragments, just like the way my trust and heart had.
“Can you please care down Aria?” Evan asked, his eyes widened and his voice dense, “Can you just come down and listen to me?”
“You disgust me, Evan! How could you do this to me?” Each of my words dripped with venom.
“I didn’t mean to, I got carried away,” He went on quietly, pushing the blanket away and slipping out of the bed, “It is not like I didn’t understand your pain or what you spoke of going through, it is just that I got entangled in another business.”
“Yes, I can see that clearly for myself,” I darted my eyes away from him to Lila, who was gripping the blanket with so much fear in her eyes. I felt like smashing her head with the vase I was holding.
Taking my eyes back to Evan, “You think you can betray me like this and get away with this?” I asked rhetorically, “You are going to pay for everything, Evan. Every single thing! The both of you.”
Satisfied with the damage I had done and the threatening words that I had passed across with no idea how I was going to go about it, I turned on my heel and stormed out of the room, leaving them both naked and frozen in their shame. My heart ached with every step I took, from the double blow of the diagnosis and their betrayal. My appointment with the doctor, the result, and now this. It was too much for me to bear.
