Chapter one:Her fears
"Victoria McKenzie stared blankly at the expensive painting hanging in the grand foyer of her family's mansion. The vibrant colors and delicate brushstrokes seemed to mock her, a reminder of the life she once knew. A life that was now nothing more than a distant memory.
She felt like a ghost drifting through the halls, invisible and insignificant. Her parents, Ryan and Rachel McKenzie, had once doted on her, showering her with attention and affection. But that was before Jane was born.
Victoria's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her mother's voice, shrill and critical. 'Victoria, why are you standing there like a statue? You need to get ready for dinner. Our guests will be arriving soon.'
Victoria sighed inwardly, feeling the familiar weight of her mother's disapproval. She turned away from the painting and began to make her way upstairs, her feet heavy with the knowledge that she didn't belong."
"Victoria trudged upstairs, her mind numb from the familiar criticism. She had learned to tune out her mother's disapproving comments, but they still stung.
As she entered her bedroom, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her long, dark hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail, and her blue eyes seemed dull and lifeless. She sighed, feeling like she was just going through the motions.
Victoria began to get ready for dinner, changing into a elegant black dress and doing her makeup. She looked polished and refined, but inside, she felt empty and unfulfilled.
As she made her way downstairs, she could hear the sound of laughter and conversation coming from the dining room. Her parents were hosting a dinner party, and the guests were already arriving.
Victoria took a deep breath and pasted on a smile, preparing herself for another night of pretending to be the perfect daughter."
