PROLOGUE
The old wolf was dying. Snow drifted across the mountains in silver waves, covering the battlefield beneath a blanket of white. Blood stained the frozen ground, turning the snow crimson beneath the moonlight. The war was over. And they had lost. The old wolf staggered forward, his breathing ragged as pain tore through his body. Every step left a trail of blood behind him. Around him lay the fallen. Warriors. Alphas. Kings. An entire generation sacrificed to stop the darkness. Yet it hadn’t been enough. The enemy was still coming. The sky itself seemed wounded. Black clouds churned above the mountains while lightning flashed through them like cracks spreading across glass. The world was breaking. And everyone knew it. The old wolf climbed higher despite the agony burning through his limbs. He ignored the pain. Ignored the blood pouring from his wounds. He had one final task. One final hope. At the summit stood an ancient stone altar carved directly into the mountain. The Moon Altar. The oldest sacred place in the kingdom. Legends claimed the Moon Goddess herself had touched the stone when the world was young. The old wolf collapsed beside it. For a moment he simply knelt there, struggling to breathe. Then he looked up at the full moon. His silver eyes reflected its light. “Please,” he whispered. The wind answered. Cold. Lonely. Empty. The old wolf closed his eyes. He had served the kingdom for centuries. Protected it. Led it. Loved it. And now he was about to watch it die. A bitter laugh escaped him. After all his victories… After all his sacrifices… This was how it ended. Failure. A distant scream echoed across the mountains. The old wolf’s eyes snapped open. The darkness was spreading faster. Soon there would be nothing left. No packs. No kingdoms. No future. Only shadows. Only death. “No.” His voice trembled. Not from fear. From determination. There had to be another way. There had to be. The ancient markings carved into the altar began to glow. Soft silver light spread across the stone. The old wolf stared. Hope flickered inside him. The stories. The prophecy. The forgotten promise. With trembling hands he placed his palm against the altar. The light intensified. The mountain shook. A voice filled the air. Gentle. Powerful. Timeless. “My faithful guardian.” The old wolf lowered his head immediately. Tears burned his eyes. “Moon Goddess.” The voice seemed to come from everywhere at once. “The hour has arrived.” “I know.” His throat tightened. “We failed.” “No.” The voice carried the warmth of moonlight. “You bought them time.” The old wolf laughed bitterly. “Time won’t save them.” “Not today.” Silence settled between them. Then the Moon Goddess spoke again. “But one day.” The altar blazed with silver fire. Visions exploded through the old wolf’s mind. A young girl running through a forest. Eyes filled with determination. Hair dancing in the wind. A mark glowing beneath her skin. The image vanished. Another appeared. A warrior with dark hair and storm-gray eyes. An Alpha. Strong. Fearsome. Standing beside the girl. Not as her enemy. As her protector. The vision shifted again. Fire consumed kingdoms. Armies marched. Wolves howled. Stars fell from the sky. And in the center of it all stood the girl. The fate of the world resting in her hands. The old wolf gasped. “Who is she?” “The child of prophecy.” The words echoed across the mountain. “The last hope.” Fear twisted inside him. “And if she fails?” The silence that followed felt endless. When the Moon Goddess finally answered, her voice carried a sadness older than the world itself. “Then darkness will inherit the earth.” The old wolf closed his eyes. A single tear rolled down his weathered face. One girl. One future. One impossible burden. It wasn’t fair. No child should carry the fate of nations. No child should be asked to save the world. Yet destiny rarely cared about fairness. “What must I do?” The altar glowed brighter. “Protect the bloodline.” “The bloodline?” “The ancient spirit must survive.” The old wolf frowned. “The Silver Wolf.” “Yes.” The name alone carried power. Ancient power. Forgotten power. A force so dangerous it had been erased from history. Long ago, before kingdoms and packs existed, the Silver Wolf had stood between light and darkness. Neither king nor god. Neither beast nor spirit. Simply a guardian. A protector. A legend. Most believed it was nothing more than a myth now. But myths often contained truth. “The spirit will awaken again,” said the Moon Goddess. “When?” “When the world needs it most.” The old wolf lowered his head. Understanding settled over him. The child. The prophecy. The spirit. Everything was connected. “How will we find her?” The answer came immediately. “You will not.” Confusion crossed his face. “What?” “The future must unfold naturally.” The old wolf stared at the altar. “If nobody knows who she is, how can she survive?” The mountain trembled again. Silver light spilled across the snow. “Because fate will guide her.” The old wolf almost laughed. Fate. A beautiful idea. A dangerous one. He had seen too much suffering to place blind faith in destiny. Yet this was the Moon Goddess speaking. And her words had never failed. Not once. The storm overhead intensified. Darkness churned beyond the mountains. The enemy was approaching. Time was running out. The old wolf rose to his feet. Barely. Every movement sent agony through his body. But his purpose was clear now. His fear had become resolve. The kingdom might not survive this night. He might not survive this night. But someday… The girl would come. And when she did, hope would return. The Moon Goddess spoke one final time. “When the child awakens…” The wind stopped. The stars seemed to hold their breath. “…the Alpha will find his mate.” The old wolf frowned. “Mate?” The altar pulsed. “The bond will unite what hatred divided.” Images flashed again. The dark-haired Alpha. The girl. Standing together against impossible odds. Their hands intertwined. Their destinies connected. The old wolf smiled sadly. Even in the darkest future… There was still love. Perhaps that was the point. Perhaps love had always been the point. The light around the altar began fading. The vision was ending. The Moon Goddess was leaving. “Wait.” The old wolf stepped forward. “Will they succeed?” For the first time, uncertainty touched the divine voice. “The future has many paths.” His heart sank. The Moon Goddess continued. “Whether they save the world or destroy it…” Lightning split the sky. The storm roared. “…will depend on the choices they make.” Then the light vanished. The mountain fell silent. The old wolf stood alone once more. Snow drifted around him. The cold no longer bothered him. He understood now. Hope wasn’t certainty. Hope was possibility. And possibility was enough. A smile touched his face. Slowly, he lifted his head toward the moon. Then he released a howl. A powerful. Ancient. Heartbreaking howl. It echoed across every mountain. Every forest. Every kingdom. A promise carried by the wind. A promise meant for a child not yet born. For an Alpha not yet chosen. For a future not yet written. The howl traveled farther than any sound should. Farther than any mortal voice could reach. And somewhere beyond time itself… Something answered. The old wolf smiled. Then he closed his eyes. Forever. The storm swallowed the mountain. The kingdom fell into darkness. And the prophecy began.
