RUBY
Training has always been more about fighting to be a better fighter for me, on the training circle is where I felt most alive. Where I could forget the problems that weighed and threatened to ruin everything for me. Clutching my fists tightly around my sword, I continued to swing angrily as I imagined a few rogues coming at me. Sweat drip down my forward, forcing me to stop and reached fir the hand towel I kept on some equipment on the training grounds.
Drying off my sweat, I took my bottled water and took a long healthy shallow, only to end up dropping it a few seconds later as pain stabbed at my chest. Bracing myself against the equipment shelves, I clutched my chest in pain, looking around for what seemed like an explanation for what’s happening to me. I was short of breath, sweating more profusely than before, and my body was quivering a little.
The pain seemed to go on forever when in reality it had only been a few minutes before it stopped. Come the pain passed, I straightened up and took a deep breath, glad to be in control of my body once again. But what the hell happened? I hadn’t felt pain like that since…since…I shook my head, refusing to think about the past and how much pain it had cost me.
“Ruby…” A family voice whispered into her unconscious, the voice sounded so close and yet so far away that it took me a second to realize it was my brother communicating with me through the mind link. It’s been so long since I spoke with another being using the mind link that it felt so foreign.
Emotions swell up inside me at the sound of his voice, taking a deep breath once more. I tried to keep my voice level, calm and composed before speaking. “Dean? How have you been?” The next time he spoke, something told me he didn’t contact me just to check on me but I waited for him to say something first.
“I wish I could tell you I’ve been fine but I’m afraid my voice will prove me to be a liar. Something terrible has happened Ruby, you have to return home at once.” He declared, causing every nerve in my body to still.
Come home? Those were the words I never thought I’d hear again. In fact, when I left home, I swore never to return and now he wants me to drop everything and return home? Not possible. “I understand your concern Dean, but I’m sure whatever bad thing that has happened, our parents and the Alpha can take care of it.” My voice took a dark tone at the mention of the Alpha.
“The pack was under an attack, it’s been an ongoing battle for a while now and we lost…” his voice trailed off, not before I heard the way his voice cracked with emotion. “Our parents Ruby, they are gone. Murdered in cold blood and the rogues are not backing down until they have some completely wiped out. I understand if you hesitate to help us, especially with the way you’ve been treated but…Mom and Dad would want you here, they died fighting and protecting our home, they would want you to do the same despite how you were treated, because you are a good person.” He concluded, I could tell he was in full blown tears by now.
Both panic and pain struck me, leaving me to fall back against the shelf and knocking off all the weapons. I collapsed on the ground, running my fingers through my long hair with frustration and anger. Furious at the rogues who took them away from me and furious at myself for not being there to help. Without thinking, I lift my face towards the sky, letting out a gut wrenching scream.
“Ruby?” Several concerned voices chorus my name as they rushed towards me, where I sat on the ground sobbing silently.
“What happened? Did you cut yourself?” Nadia, one of my best friends, asked, reaching for my hand to examine my supposed cut.
“Seriously Nadia? When has someone ever screamed like that from cutting their finger?” My other best friend Mika, interjected.
“Not now, you two!” Shaun, my boyfriend cuts in before they start arguing again. Pushing them aside, he gently took hold of my hand as he went down on his knees to match my height. I love the gentle way he holds me, it’s one of the things that made me fall in love with him. “Ruby, please talk to me…what happened?” He brushed my hair away from my face when I finally lifted my head to look at him.
Looking at him through tear blurry eyes, I told him what happened. “I have to be there, they need me.” Dusting myself off from the floor, I begin to look around for my sword. “My brother needs me, my pack…” I trailed off when Shaun suddenly grabbed my shoulder, stilling my movement.
“I don’t care about who needs you! I want you to be okay.” There was a note of desperation, mixed with panic in his voice. “These people don’t care about you! Why didn’t he reach out before your parents were dead? And now he’s expecting you to walz in there and save the very people that treated you horribly?” He shook his head, like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“You know what, Ruby? Shaun is right about this, you can’t go back there.” Mika chimed in.
“Are you guys listening to me? My parents are dead and my brother is there all by himself, I have to be there to protect him—” I was cut off by an impatient groan from Shaun.
“Is that what you’ve been training yourself to death? Waiting for the chance and opportunity to go back there and prove them wrong? Is it worth risking your life for? And are you just going to abandon me? Your friends? I understand your concerns for your brother and you can bring him here, what I do not understand is your concern for those people!” His voice went higher on the last statement.
I looked from one face to another, a disappointing expression settling over my own face at the realization that nothing I say will make them change their mind. In fact it seemed like they were bent on misunderstanding me so without another word, I picked up my sword and made my way back inside.
In the privacy of my bedroom, I took a shower before falling back into bed where I stared unblinking at the ceiling hours. At some point, I vividly remember someone knocking on my door but after several knocks with no response, whoever it was accepted defeated and went away. I rolled onto my side, closing my eyes as I tried to get some sleep.
Not only was my mind exhausted, my body was tired as well…
Nothing could ruin this day for me, I thought happily skipping down the dimmed hallway to my new bedroom in the pack house. The night before, I had discovered my mate and it wasn’t just anyone. I was mated to our Alphas twin sons! Of course not everyone had been happy about it, I could sense it from their faces but my ever loving parents assured me that there was nothing to be insecure about. I took confidence in their words and assurance because like them I truly believe that I was as useless as the pack painted me out to be.
Our Alpha had ordered me to move into the pack house immediately, where I would be groomed to be a proper mate and the future. My training starts tomorrow and I was so looking forward to it! Pushing my bedroom door open, I froze at the scene u folding in front of my eyes as all blood drained from my face.
Basil and Bernard, my freaking mates, were in bed with another woman right in my bedroom and on my bed! Few minutes passed by before they finally realised that they weren’t alone and even after they saw me standing there, they carried on like it was nothing. Filled with despair, I ran out of my bedroom with tears in my eyes. A foolish part of me thought they would come after me, begged me to stay back and that it had been a mistake but nothing like that happened.
I burst into my parents house, with my Mom being the only one around. She immediately met me halfway across the room, putting her arms around me as I sobbed into her chest. “I can’t believe they would do this to me, and this soon.” I cried, whimpering from the pain stabbing through my chest. It was like being pricked by a thousand needles at once except that it hurt so much worse.
“Ruby, calm down. What’s going on? You’re crying so much, your body is quivering. You’re starting to scare me!”
“Bernard and Basil Mom, they were with another girl… I walked in on them.” I managed to force the words out, watching her body go ridge with shock.
“What? What did you just say?” She asked again. “Are you sure you saw them? I mean is there any chance that you misunderstood the whole situation?” I pushed myself out of her embrace, not believing she was doubting me.
“Misunderstood the situation? What am I? Eight? Mom, I saw them in my freaking bedroom!” Then the pain turned into anger, I shouldn’t be here shouting at my Mom, my anger should be at my mates who cheated on me! With that realization, I hurried back to the packhouse, walking into my room again and this time, they were getting dressed.
“Back here for another show? I knew she wished it was her.” Basil taunted, with disgust written all over his face. “But not in a million years! Right brother?” He chuckled, looking at Bernard for support.
“Of course brother, the fact that she thinks we will desire something as disgusting as her!” He made a gagging noise at the back of his throat.
“How could you both do this to me? Why are you being so cruel?” I cried as they move in on me, forcing me to back away from them in fear.
“Being cruel? The cruel joke is you thinking you’re fit to be our mate, talk more of the future Luna of our pack. Have you looked in the mirror lately Ruby? You’re a joke! A cruel joke played on us by the moon goddess!”
I woke up with a start, touching my face and noticing how wet it was from crying in my sleep. Just then, a knock came through and this time I got out of bed to answer it. Shaun walked in the second I opened the door with a tray of food.
“You didn’t come downstairs for dinner and I thought I’ll bring dinner to you.” He went ahead and dropped it on my bed before turning to look at me with those brown loving eyes of his. “I’m sorry for earlier, I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that. Just thinking about how they treated you makes me lose my mind.”
“There’s the thing Shawn, I’m not going back for them. I’m going back for my brother and to get revenge on those rogues for taking my parents away from me. This is so much bigger than that.” Trying to lighten the mood, I glanced at the tray. “Thank you for bringing me dinner, I was hungry.”
He smiled, reaching for my hand as we settled down on my bed. “Do you want me to come with you? I realize how much this means to you and I don’t want to inconvenience you in any way–” I cut him off.
“What are you saying Shaun? You will never be an inconvenience to me. Besides, as much as I would love for you to come with, you’re needed here.” Leaning forward, I wrapped my arms around his neck. “You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me Shaun and I love you.” My heart fluttered at the intense way he looked at me.
“I love you more my incredible Ruby.” He replied, sealing it with a kiss.
The next few days were going to be intense, I could feel it deep in my guts but was I ready to face everyone after what happened? Am I ready to face the ghost of my past? Those questions lingered in my mind, threatening to suffocate me!
