Chapter 16

1043 Words
Clara’s pov I did not plan to cry, I told myself that I would not shed a single tear retelling what had happened to me that night. In fact I had fooled myself with a thought that we could even laugh about it now but when my thoughts got to the memory that night where i was not even allowed to sleep in the garage the tears flowed more heavily than the rain did that night. Of course I could not tell him about the part where alpha Killian almost ran over me but everything else came bursting out of my mouth like water flowing out a broken dam. Lucas circled around at the table, he came over and give me a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. “I can not believe all of that happened to you,” then his voice hardened, “...that bastard, next time I see him I'll–” “No!” I creamed loudly enough for other customers of the cafe to look in our direction, my cheeks flushed until their gaze looked away. “Don't do that please...” I repeated it again this time much more quietly, “it's not like I don't want to see him suffer for what he had put me through…. I hope he pays from the bottom of my heart…but I couldn't bear to see you stress him too,” There was no questioning that my ex was an dubious man, dubious enough to have a minimum wage worker like myself behind bars. Lucas pressed me closer as he remained standing, the mix of the caffeine, his cologne and natural scent wrapping together made for an appealing experience for my senses. “Why don't you come and live with me?” He suggested, his angered face allowing a smile, “don't worry I will help you with job hunting and everything, you will be right back on your feet before you know it,” There was a time I would have jumped at this opportunity with both feet, but for some reason hesitation formed in my stomach. “I don't know about that…” I said, naturally peeling myself away from his touch, “... But working as alpha Killian's maid isn't bad at all, the workload is bearable compared to what I used to do in the past, he pays good money and despite how he looks he's actually a really nice boss,” Lucas eyed me suspiciously as though there was an invisible man holding an equally invisible gun to my head and forcing me to read out a script. Lucas dragged his chair until it was right next to mine he sat down and crossed his long arm over my own chair and also over my shoulder. “Clara, you do not have to pretend, he is not even here or anything. Anyone can tell you you were uncomfortable around him,” I tried to create some distance between us but he immediately eclipse it with a swift movement that made my efforts vain and pointless. “He's still my boss,” I continued to defend myself, “there's no way we were going to look like a couple of friends chatting at the same table, just like me and you,” Lucas suddenly withdrew his hand, “Right, friends,” he moisten his lips around the world, “... That's what we are right?” The way he threw the question at me was tricky, he had this smile that was just a little bit too wide plastered on his face, it pierced like a dagger. Normally, asking a question like that would have been a piece of cake for me. “Actually we're not friends…” I said trying to get smart with it, I thought I was on the right part since he smile started looking more genuine, “You’re my best friend!” I finished proudly. His face lost some of the color, and he did not even bother to smile anymore, the curve of his expression falling into a flat hardened line then slipping back into a curve again. “Exactly, we are friends. Wouldn't you be more comfortable living with me?” It's starting to feel like we're talking in circles now. I know Lucas was just worried for me but I had already told him in almost 10 different ways that I was fine working with Alpha Killian. I mean what did self-imposed labor, that gave me nothing at the end of the day… waking up at the dead of night to do Henry's projects for him because he was tired and I didn't want to wake him up. I would cook a variety of dishes only to have each rejected. Sometimes, Henry would even throw the food off the table saying words that he shouldn't even had known the meaning of at his age. Compared to this… and many other unappreciated labour I did in that house the job I now have is much more rewarding. But Lucas' eyes became even more filled with pity as I spoke. Then he came even closer, his shoulder pressed to mine. Before he could say something else someone came between the both of us literally pushing our chairs away from each other like we both weighed less than a feather filled pillow. “Nope!” It was Alpha Killian, he snapped at Lucas who couldn't do much but heatedly glare back as a retort. Nobody was stupid enough to openly challenge an alpha anyways. I gave Lucas a signal with my fingers that we would talk on the phone then followed alpha Killian who had mysteriously wrapped his fingers around mine, pulling me out of the cafe. I do not think he was even fully aware of what he was doing, and maybe I should have told him from the start. But strangely enough, something just felt right with my fingers snugly covered in his and even if it was just for a brief moment that was pumped with adrenaline in his mind I did not feel like I needed to correct him. We had already crossed a couple of boundaries as employer and employee. What was one more boundary to cross.
