THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
“Sir?” Thomas froze. His hands stopped moving, his entire body suddenly stiff as he stood beside the two cradles. Only moments ago, he had carefully lifted one newborn from her cradle and placed her into the other, then taken the second baby and put her where the first one had been. He had just swapped two newborn babies. Thomas stared at the two infants beneath their identical white blankets, his chest rising and falling rapidly. They looked so small and innocent, completely unaware that their lives had just been changed by a decision made by a desperate man. He had checked the corridor before making the exchange. The nurses had rushed away to deal with an emergency, the doctors were occupied, and nobody had been watching, so who had just called him? Slowly, Thomas turned around. A man stood at the entrance of the room, staring at him with an expression of confusion. “I'm sorry,” the man said, looking from Thomas to the baby in his arms. “Who are you?” THREE HOURS EARLIER....... "I can't do this anymore!" Maria cried out, her fingers gripping the sheets so tightly that her knuckles turned white. "Please, just get my baby out! I can't take it anymore!" "You're doing well, Mrs. Santos," the nurse encouraged, her voice steady and calm despite the chaos around them. "You're almost there. One more push!" The delivery room was filled with hurried footsteps, the beeping of medical equipment, and the strained cries of a woman fighting through the final moments of childbirth. Maria Santos squeezed her eyes shut and pushed with everything she had left. Her body was exhausted, her muscles screaming in protest, but she refused to give up. "I can see the baby's head!" the doctor announced, his voice rising with excitement. "Come on, Mrs. Santos. You've got this! One more big push!" Maria screamed, a raw, primal sound that seemed to tear itself from somewhere deep inside her, then suddenly, a tiny cry filled the room. The cry was small and fragile, but it was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard. "It's a girl," the doctor announced, his voice filled with warmth. Maria burst into tears. "My baby..." she whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. The nurse quickly wrapped the newborn in a clean white hospital blanket, her movements swift and practiced. She placed the baby in a nearby cradle, where the infant continued to cry, her tiny fists waving in the air. "She's beautiful," the nurse said softly, smiling down at the newborn. "Perfect in every way." Maria's exhausted eyes followed the baby, her heart swelling with love despite her fatigue. "Can I hold her?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "In a moment," the nurse replied gently. "We need to make sure you're stable first. Just rest for now." Maria nodded weakly, her eyes never leaving the cradle where her daughter lay. Meanwhile, In the delivery ward beside hers, another woman was fighting through the same battle. "Push, Mrs. Sterling!" the doctor commanded. "You're almost there!" Victoria Sterling cried out as she held onto the nurse's hand, her body trembling with the effort. "I can't!" she gasped. "I don't think I can do this!" "Yes, you can," the nurse assured her, her voice firm but kind. "You're almost there. Just a little more. You're doing so well." Richard Sterling stood outside the delivery room, pacing nervously back and forth across the linoleum floor. His hands were clasped behind his back, and his jaw was tight with tension. Then he heard it. A baby's cry. Richard froze, his heart pounding in his chest. He turned toward the door, his eyes wide with anticipation. A nurse stepped out moments later with a huge smile on her face. "Mr. Sterling, congratulations. It's a girl." Richard's face immediately changed. The worry and tension that had been etched into his features for the past several hours disappeared in an instant, replaced by overwhelming joy. "A daughter?" he repeated, his voice catching. "Yes," the nurse confirmed. "A beautiful, healthy baby girl." "My wife?" he asked, his voice trembling. "How is she?" "She's doing well. Exhausted, but well." Richard let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "Can I see them?" "Very soon. The doctor is finishing up. We'll come get you in a few minutes." Inside the delivery room, Victoria was exhausted beyond words. "My daughter..." she whispered, her voice filled with wonder. The nurse gently placed the newborn into a cradle beside the bed, positioning the baby so that Victoria could see her. Then suddenly, the maternity ward became busy. One of the nurses rushed between rooms, her face tight with urgency, while another doctor was called to attend to a woman who had arrived unexpectedly with an emergency delivery. A woman had gone into premature labor, and the situation was critical. "Everyone, we need to move quickly," a senior nurse instructed, her voice sharp with authority. "Take the emergency case to room three. We need all available hands." The chaos that ensued was immediate and consuming. Doctors and nurses rushed from one room to another, their attention entirely focused on the woman whose life was hanging in the balance. The emergency delivery required their full attention, leaving the maternity ward temporarily understaffed. Neither mother was awake enough to notice what was happening around them. Maria had lost consciousness from sheer exhaustion, and Victoria was drifting in and out of sleep, her body finally surrendering to the exhaustion of her body. Thomas Santos stood at the end of the corridor, his hands buried deep inside his pockets. His eyes were fixed on the doorway leading to the delivery rooms. He had been at the hospital for hours, sitting in the waiting room while his wife, Maria, endured the pain of childbirth, but his mind wasn't on her, his eyes were fixed on the Sterling name written on a folder resting on the nurses' station. Of course, he knew exactly who Victoria Sterling was. He had known her years ago, back when they were both young and full of dreams. Back then, she had been the girl every boy wanted to impress, the girl who could have any man she wanted and Thomas had been one of them, but Victoria had never returned his feelings. She had barely even noticed him. Worse, she had rejected him publicly, humiliating him in front of their classmates. Now she had a wealthy husband, a beautiful home, and everything Thomas believed should have been his. She had succeeded in every way he had failed. And tonight, she had just given birth to a daughter. Thomas glanced toward the maternity rooms, his eyes narrowing. An idea entered his mind, dark and dangerous. At first, it sounded impossible—the kind of thought that should have been dismissed immediately. But then he thought about the life his own daughter would have. He thought about the Sterling mansion, the money, the private schools, the opportunities that would be available to a child born into that world. His daughter could have everything and Victoria's daughter could take her place. Thomas slowly walked toward the maternity ward, his footsteps silent on the linoleum floor. His heart pounded in his chest, but he kept moving forward. He knew this was wrong. Every instinct told him to turn back, but he kept walking. The corridor was suddenly quiet. The nurses had rushed away to attend the emergency delivery, and the doctors were all occupied. Thomas looked through the doorway and saw two cradles side by side. They had been kept there for examining when the nurses returned. Thomas approached the first cradle. His hand trembled as he reached for the baby inside. "Forgive me," he whispered, his voice barely audible. He carefully lifted the infant, cradling her in his arms. Then he moved to the second cradle and picked up the other baby. Both infants were still wrapped in the same white hospital blankets, their tiny faces peaceful in sleep. Thomas looked at the two babies, his heart racing. One belonged to him, the other belonged to Victoria. He placed his own daughter inside the cradle meant for the Sterling baby, then placed Victoria's daughter inside the other cradle meant for his daughter. Thomas stepped back, his chest rising and falling as he stared at the two cradles. It was done or so he thought. He turned to leave, but as soon as he could walk towards where his wife lay, someone called out to him. “Excuse me, sir.” Thomas froze. “I'm sorry,” the man said, looking confused. “Who are you, and what were you doing near my baby?”
