Elara Voss is the most unapologetically rude, sharp‑tongued staff member in the entire Blackwood Syndicate — the city’s most powerful criminal organization. She doesn’t flinch at guns, doesn’t bow to titles, and snaps at anyone who wastes her time… including the terrifying, untouchable mafia boss, Killian Blackwood. Hired as his personal operations manager to fix his crumbling internal systems, she clashes with him from day one. But as they navigate betrayals, impossible missions, and secrets neither dares speak, their sharp words slowly turn into something neither expected.

THE NEW MANAGER NOBODY WANTED
The heavy oak doors of the top‑floor office swung open before the guard could even announce her. Elara Voss walked in like she owned the place — head high, boots clicking loud enough to cut through the quiet, a leather folder clamped under one arm. She didn’t glance at the armed men lining the walls, didn’t flinch at the faint smell of gun oil and expensive cigar smoke, and didn’t slow down until she was standing directly in front of the massive mahogany desk. Behind it sat Killian Blackwood. At thirty‑two, he ruled half the city’s underground with an iron fist and a reputation for cold cruelty. His tailored black suit hid scars old and new; his dark eyes were so sharp they felt like blades. Most people who stepped into this room lowered their voices, kept their heads down, and left as fast as they could. Elara didn’t do any of that. “Your filing system is garbage,” she said, without preamble. She dropped her folder on his desk hard enough to make his pen rattle. “Half your logistics reports are missing, three of your safe house locations are listed wrong, and your payroll is three weeks behind. No wonder your men are complaining about not getting paid.” Killian stared at her. For a long moment, nobody spoke. The guards shifted their weight, hands drifting closer to their weapons. Everyone knew better than to speak to him like that. Even his most trusted captains asked before they criticized. He leaned forward, elbows on the desk. “And you are?” “Elara Voss. The operations manager your advisor begged you to hire. Said I was the only one crazy enough to untangle the mess you’ve made of your own network.” She tapped the folder. “I’ve gone through twelve files in the last hour. You’re lucky I’m rude. If I was polite, I’d tell you it’s ‘disorganized’ instead of ‘a disaster waiting to get half your people killed.’” One of the guards stepped forward. “Watch your tone with the boss—” “Shut up,” Elara snapped over her shoulder, so sharp the man actually froze. “I’m talking to him, not you. If you interrupt me again, I’ll move your post to the basement storage where nobody can see you. Got it?” Killian lifted an eyebrow. A faint, almost unnoticeable flicker of something crossed his face — surprise, maybe, or amusement. Most people trembled when he looked at them. This woman was yelling at his guards and insulting his organization like she was scolding a toddler who spilled juice on the carpet. “You’re very bold for someone who just walked into enemy territory,” he said quietly. “I’m bold because I’m good at what I do.” She pulled a stack of papers from her folder and slid them across the desk. “Here’s the first round of fixes. I need access to the central server, all safe house blueprints, and a meeting with every department head by tomorrow afternoon. If I don’t get it, I walk — and you can try finding someone else who doesn’t kiss your boots long enough to actually fix your problems.” He looked down at the papers: neat, organized, every problem clearly marked with solutions already drafted. It was better work than he’d gotten from three people in the role before her. Killian nodded slowly. “You’ll get everything you asked for. But if you waste my time—” “If I waste your time, you can shoot me yourself,” she said, already turning for the door. “Just don’t make me wait for the access codes. I don’t like being late.” She walked out the same way she came — no bow, no hesitation, not even a glance back. Killian watched the doors close. His second‑in‑command, Elias, stepped up beside him. “Boss? Should I—” “No,” Killian said, picking up one of her papers. A corner of his mouth tugged upward. “Let her work. It’s been a long time since anyone here spoke to me like I’m just another i***t who needs things done right.”
