Terms and Blades

Killian stepped in front of Elara without a second thought, his broad frame blocking her entirely from the line of drawn crossbows, his hand resting on the hilt of his dagger. His voice dropped to a low, dangerous rumble that carried clearly across the echoing hall. “Let her go. And let the girl go too. This is between you and me. Whatever debt you think you owe, whatever grudge you hold—settle it with me. Leave them out of it.” “Between us?” Marco threw his head back and laughed, the sound sharp and hollow, bouncing off the rusted rafters. He stepped forward until the firelight gilded the edge of his tailored coat and glinted off the pale, jagged scar slicing through his left eyebrow—an old wound from a fight with Killian years before, one he’d never stopped nursing. “Don’t flatter yourself, Rainer. This isn’t about pride, or old grudges, or one man against another. This is about what you have and what I want. You’ve clung to this city like it belongs to you, hiding behind pretty words and soft choices, too afraid to get your hands truly dirty. You’ve held this throne long enough. It’s time someone with real fire took it.” He nodded past Killian, straight at Elara, his gaze cold and calculating. “And hand her over. She’s worth more to me than this whole crumbling building, more than every border crossing, more than every shipment you’ve ever seized. She’s the one who’s been unraveling every plan I’ve laid for months. I want her.” Before Killian could reply, Elara pushed past his shoulder, stepping out into the open space beside him. Her stance was wide and unyielding, her chin lifted high, the same sharp, unapologetic fire that had gotten her hired blazing in her eyes—the same fire that had drawn Killian to her, the same fire that drove him half-crazy with pride and fear every single day. “You think I’m some prize to trade back and forth?” she called out, her voice ringing clear over the crackle of torches. “You think I’m just leverage you can barter with? You have no idea who you’re dealing with. I know exactly how many of your weapons shipments I rerouted to the police last month. I know exactly which safe houses you marked for your hitmen—before I moved every single family out of them. I know exactly how much money you’ve been siphoning from your own crews, and exactly where you’ve hidden it.” Marco’s confident smile faltered for the first time, his eyes narrowing in genuine surprise. “Oh, I know all that. That’s exactly why I want you. Smart, sharp, mean enough to cut your own boss if he steps out of line. You’re wasted on him—on all this talk of protecting the weak and doing what’s right. You belong with people who know how to win, no matter the cost.” He signaled sharply to his men, his tone turning cold and commanding. “Grab her. Secure the girl. Leave the boss for last—break him slow.” The crossbows shifted, bolts tracking to follow Elara’s movement, and the enforcers took a step forward— Then a sharp, piercing whistle cut through the air, echoing off the brick walls: Elias’s prearranged signal from the rafters high above. Glass shattered overhead in a dozen places at once. Heavy canisters rained down onto the concrete floor, bursting open the moment they hit, and thick, billowing grey smoke rolled outward in an instant, swallowing the torches and blinding the Varelli men. Shouts of confusion rang out, crossbow bolts fired wildly into the dark, and the air filled with the sharp, acrid tang of chemical smoke. “Now!” Killian yelled, drawing his dagger and lunging forward into the haze. Their team moved like shadows, silent and coordinated, exactly as they’d planned. Jesse and Torin circled wide to disable the archers at the edges; others cut off the exits to stop anyone from fleeing or calling for backup. Elara didn’t hesitate—she ducked low, weaving through the smoke until she reached the thick iron pillar at the center of the room. She drew the small, sharp knife she kept strapped to her calf, the blade glinting faintly as she sawed swiftly through the heavy ropes binding Lila’s wrists and ankles. The frayed cord fell away in seconds. “Run—get to the back exit!” Elara said, giving her a gentle but urgent shove toward the shadowed archway leading to the rear courtyard. “Elias has a car waiting there for you. Go straight to the manor—don’t stop for anything.” “Not without you!” Lila grabbed her arm, her grip tight with fear, her eyes wide even through the drifting smoke. “I’m not leaving you here to face them alone—you’ve never left me behind, and I’m not leaving you.” Elara’s heart ached, but she shook her head firmly, leaning in so only her friend could hear. “Go! I’ve got Killian, I’ve got the team, and I’ve got a score to settle with Marco that’s been waiting too long. I’ll be right behind you, I promise—but someone has to make sure you’re safe first. Go now!” She gave Lila one last push toward the waiting guards who’d appeared at the archway, and this time Lila went, glancing back over her shoulder until the smoke swallowed her from sight. Elara turned back just in time to see Marco shove aside two of his own disoriented men, his eyes locking straight onto Killian. He drew a long, narrow silver blade from inside his coat—its edge serrated, its tip stained dark—and lunged forward with a snarl, swinging hard at Killian’s chest. Killian blocked the strike with his forearm, the metal ringing loud as their blades clashed, and stepped into the attack, driving his elbow hard into Marco’s ribs. Marco grunted but didn’t stumble, kicking out to sweep Killian’s legs, and the two men circled each other in the thinning smoke—both fast, both strong, both knowing every trick the other had learned from years of fighting on the same streets. Elara started forward to help, but Killian glanced over his shoulder for half a second and gave a sharp, quick shake of his head—this one’s mine. She stopped short, her knife still raised, keeping watch as Marco feinted left then drove forward, aiming straight for Killian’s throat. TO BE CONTINUED…
