The Things You Hide

Episode 4: The Things You Hide It was late, past two in the morning, when Killian found Elara still at her desk. The whole floor was dark except for her lamp. She was staring at a file, her usual sharp expression gone quiet, almost sad. He knocked gently on the doorframe. She jumped, then scowled — but it was weaker than usual. “You’re still here?” “I could ask you the same.” He walked in, setting two cups of coffee on her desk. “What’s wrong?” For a long moment, she didn’t answer. Then she pushed the file toward him. “This case — the one about the missing accountant. He’s not just a thief. His daughter’s in the hospital. The Varellis have her.” Killian looked at the papers. “You think I should help him?” “I think you should stop acting like everyone who makes a mistake is your enemy.” She leaned back, her voice softer than he’d ever heard it. “People don’t just betray you for no reason. Most of the time, they’re just scared. Or desperate.” “Is that what you are?” he asked quietly. “Desperate?” She went still. Then she looked away. “I’m just saying… you can’t build a syndicate on fear alone. Eventually, people stop caring if they live or die. Then you lose everything.” He sat down on the edge of her desk — something he’d never done for anyone else. “I didn’t always run it like this. When I took over… I thought being hard was the only way to keep everyone safe. If I was soft, they’d tear us apart.” “Being hard doesn’t mean you have to be cruel,” she said. “There’s a difference between strong and heartless.” Neither of them said anything for a while. The coffee went cold. For the first time, Elara didn’t snap at him to get out of her way. And Killian realized he’d never told anyone that — not even Elias — why he was the way he was.
