Sometimes water can be thicker than blood judging from life experience, I had seen that in a hard way
The City isn't that quiet on weekends, those were our big days.We would run around the streets late at night,me,Themba and Thulani. We usually called him Toolz,we were best brothers ever since we were only left with each other We lived under the bridge at BREE street. There was a railway where the train went ,right above us.Sometimes it became our personal alarm ,when the train passed by early in the morning. We would then wake up and head to Othandweni hall, where we would receive food from the community soup kitchen.Ms Thandi would dish up for us some good rice and chicken soup on Fridays. On one of the days ,Toolz and I were working down the road ,we we were so tired we chose to take a break and relax by the scrapyard where we sent our recycles to receive money. We were then given R15 rand , which was little since we did a massive job picking up these bottles and disposed iron parts. We then went to the Noodle shop owned by Mr Sue yang to buy a bowl of which noodles that we would share .Toolz would always say after eating "full like dog on the streets as I am".him saying things like that always brought me down but when I watched Mr Sue serving food, hope became my covenant for warmth and hope that one day I would also be a chef like him I would always watch by his kitchen window, watching him cook would bring hope and build aspiration in my heart. He would make noodles that looked so fascinating and amazing.Sometimes he cooked with other Chinese Chefs that cooked different Chinese food.I always told myself that one day I would be just like them . I would see different chefs cooking all around the city, the greatest chef was Chef Anele Zola,She became my role model,I always begged the gents to go watch her show on Wednesday at Mrs Hlatshwayo's Tarven,I knew we were restricted to enter due to age ,we would just watch by the window and watch with Mrs Hlatshwayo when she watched with her family in their house One day Mrs Hlatshwayo saw me watching by the window,She opened the window and welcomed me in,I ran out to call my siblings in too ,she gave us leftovers and sometimes cookies for the road.I told her about my love for cooking and she would give recipe books to read .I did know how to read by the way ,I just left school in Grade 9 when my dad burned my mother in our shack,Themba and Toolz almost got burned too, luckily the neighbors helped them to escape through the window.my mother burnt to ashes We had to run because our dad would come for us and we were afraid that he would also kill us if he would find us.We chose the streets,we ran and lived on the streets, although it became cold during winter days ,we became warmed by our love for each other which became what held us together Mrs Hlatshwayo always helped us when we came to her , even when we needed help with anything she was our cry for help. One Saturday night,we were watching a movie with Mrs Hlatshwayo's family.Tool then asked for the bathroom,he cunningly went to Mrs Hlatshwayo's bedroom and stole all her jewelry . He then went out and never returned. Three days went by with Toolz nowhere to be found,we finally found him drunk with drugs.what he did really hurt me a lot ,to think that Mrs Hlatshwayo was taking care of us then Thulani did what he did .it really frustrated me,the last time he did this almost him landed to prison ,which I couldn't bare because I cannot live without them. Mrs Hlatshwayo chased us away from her tarven because she had the impression that "Once a junkie always a junkie", which was wrong because we weren't like that.We were good kids and we just needed a support system that would make us became educated, find jobs and build our lives. That was something we never had . We then went back to our life ,back to begging for food, back to going around the streets looking for recyclables to sell. One night Toolz convinced to go with him to steal,I absolutely disagreed but because of the situation ,I had no choice . We went to an Indian shop near Carlton Center,he showed me the shop then took out a gun on his waist and said to me"Just a quick in and out".We went inside the shop ,then he pointed the gun to the indian's face then demanded that he take out the money from the cash register. He told me to watch the door so that no one enters the shop,I listened to the instructions then headed to the door. Toolz then took the money then killed the Indian right there. When the gunshot rang in my ears ,it came to me that my life had ended. I heard the siren wail as they head to the shop. Toolz ran out and locked me inside .There was no other way out of there ,my only way was to plead guilty and serve my time. I was left alone with no one to save me, betrayed by my own . I then learned that sometimes water can be thicker than blood The end
