Chapter 6
Stella wasn't expecting to see a dead dog in the yard between the house and the shed when they reached the end of Grant Semmler's tree-lined driveway.
'Something's not right here, Sarge,' said Brian, bringing the car to a stop at the edge of the yard.
Stella looked across the yard to the shed. 'There are only two vehicles in the shed. Her Mazda's not there.'
Brian got out of the car and walked over to the dead dog. 's**t! This dog's been shot in the head.' He turned slowly and surveyed the yard and then the interior of the shed. 'There's someone on the ground between those cars.'
Stella waited near the car while Brian walked over to the shed and checked the person on the ground.
'It's Semmler. He's dead!'
