Chapter 1: The Escape
The dense, ancient forests of British Columbia stretched endlessly before Gwynne as she stood on the outskirts of Cedar Hollow. The scent of pine and damp earth filled her lungs, a welcome change from the stifling atmosphere of the home she’d just left behind. At 18, Gwynne had finally mustered the courage to flee her toxic family, leaving behind the life of fear and isolation they had imposed upon her. Cedar Hollow was a small, isolated town nestled deep in the wilderness, a place where the outside world seemed like a distant memory. The town's wooden cabins, narrow winding streets, and mist-shrouded trees made it feel as if time had stood still here. Gwynne hoped this would be her sanctuary, a place where she could start anew and leave her past behind. The locals eyed her curiously as she walked through town, but she kept her head down, avoiding their gazes. She was used to being the outsider, the one who didn’t belong. But here, she felt a strange sense of belonging, even though she had only just arrived. As she wandered, a small bookstore caught her eye. The “Help Wanted” sign in the window drew her in. Inside, the scent of old books and worn leather was intoxicating. Behind the counter stood Kate, a young woman with bright eyes and a welcoming smile. “You must be new in town,” Kate said, her voice warm and inviting. “Just arrived,” Gwynne replied, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. “I saw your sign... Are you still looking for help?” Kate grinned. “Absolutely. You’re hired.” Just like that, Gwynne had a job, and soon after, Kate helped her find a small room to rent above the bookstore. That night, as she lay in bed, exhaustion finally caught up with her, and she drifted into a deep sleep.
