Chapter 8: A Heart That Refuses to Break The air between them felt different now. Adrian had seen it—pieces of Luna’s past, flashes of fear and secrets too dangerous to hold. Yet instead of stepping back, he stood closer than ever. “I’m not walking away from you.” Luna stared at him, searching his eyes for hesitation. She found none. “You don’t understand what you’re choosing,” she said softly. “Once you step into this… there’s no turning back.” Adrian’s lips curved slightly, but there was no warmth in it—only certainty. “I never turn back.” For a moment, Luna didn’t speak. Then she looked down, as if fighting something inside herself. “You should hate me,” she whispered. “Why would I?” “Because everything happening to you right now… is because of me.” Adrian reached out and gently lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Then I’ll deal with it.” Her breath caught. “Why?” she asked again, almost helplessly. Adrian’s voice softened, something rare and unfamiliar. “Because when I thought you weren’t real… it bothered me more than anything.” Silence wrapped around them. For the first time, Luna didn’t pull away. Later that night, Adrian refused to let her stay alone. “You’re not sleeping in the guest room,” he said. Luna raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?” “It’s too far from mine.” “That’s your reason?” “Yes.” She crossed her arms. “And where exactly do you expect me to sleep?” Adrian gestured calmly. “There’s a couch in my room.” Luna narrowed her eyes. “Of course there is.” Despite everything, a small smile appeared on her face. Hours passed. The mansion was quiet again, but neither of them slept. Luna stood by the large window in Adrian’s room, staring at the dark sky. “You’re thinking about running,” Adrian said from behind her. She didn’t turn. “I always am.” “Don’t.” “Adrian—” “Don’t,” he repeated, firmer this time. Finally, she faced him. “You’re asking me to stay… but you don’t know what I am.” Adrian walked closer until only a step separated them. “Then tell me.” Luna hesitated. Then, slowly, she spoke. “I’m not just someone they’re chasing.” Adrian’s eyes sharpened. “I’m the reason they exist.” The room fell into silence. Adrian studied her face carefully, trying to understand. “That doesn’t scare you?” she asked. “No.” Luna blinked, clearly surprised. “It should.” Adrian shook his head slightly. “The only thing that would scare me…” he said quietly, “…is losing you without even knowing who you really are.” Those words hit her harder than anything else. For a moment, Luna looked completely unguarded. Then— A sudden sharp pain struck her. She gasped, gripping the edge of the window. “Luna!” Adrian rushed forward and caught her before she fell. Her body trembled, her silver eyes flickering faintly. “It’s starting…” she whispered weakly. “What is?” But Luna didn’t answer. Instead, she clutched his shirt, her voice barely audible. “Adrian… if something happens to me… promise you won’t come looking.” His expression darkened instantly. “Not a chance.” Her grip tightened slightly. “They’ll use me to destroy you…” “Let them try.” Luna looked up at him, her vision fading. “You’re impossible…” “And you’re not going anywhere,” he replied firmly. But as he held her in his arms… He could feel it. Something bigger was coming. And this time— Even he might not be able to stop it.
