She woke to beeping.
Monitors. Medical equipment. The familiar sounds of a hospital.
For a moment, she didn't remember. Didn't know why she was here.
Then it came back. Labor. Hemorrhaging. Darkness.
"David," she whispered. Voice hoarse. Throat dry. "Where's my baby?"
A nurse appeared. Kind face. Gentle hands. "You're awake. Good. Let me get the doctor."
"My baby. Where is he? Is he..."
"He's in NICU. Stable. Your husband has been with him." The nurse adjusted her IV. "Just rest. The doctor will explain everything."
Stable. That meant alive. That meant,
Adrian appeared in the doorway. He looked terrible. Exhausted. Unshaven. Like he hadn't slept in days.
But when he saw her awake, his face transformed. Relief. Joy. Love.
