Prologue
Frigid wind raked across my muzzle as I bound through the forest. The dismal lifeless sky contrasts the crimson leaves swaying over head. I couldn't stop no matter what I had to keep running. The sodden ground swallows leaves under my paws. I crossed pack boarders hours ago but I couldn't stop. Amaya, my wolf, pants stumbling to an unsteady hault
"Andie. Andie, listen to me we are miles away from the. Please we need to slow down and think. It isn't safe to keep wildly running." Amaya's voice echoes to me in the depths of our mind.
All I could muster was a meak whimper in response. If only my instincts didn't agree. Amaya is right. It will be night soon and I have no idea where I am. Ahead I could here the faint sound of cars. No sooner the aracid stench of asphalt stings my nose drowning out almost all other scents.
"That's it!", I thought. If I can get to the interstate then I can catch a ride to the city. They'll never be able to distinguish my scent there.
I edge forward the fur on the back of my neck bristles with uneasiness. The undergrowth has all but vanished and the tress have become sparse.
"Andie, slow down think this through more."
"Now is not the time to think! If you only knew what they put me through! If they found out I have you they would kill us both!" I shrieked and my wolf fell silent.
She doesn't understand they are monsters. They killed my parents for fun. my mother couldn't even defend herself she was human. I was six years old. Six years old and my world uprooted and my family slaughtered. The monsters that stole me away took everything. My freedom, my hope, my future.... my innocence. I couldn't let them take anything else. When Amaya came to me last night on my sixteenth birthday I knew that if they found out I would loose her too.
"Andie if you would just listen to me there isn't anything to be afraid of anymore. They can't harm you. I won't let them." Amaya tries to sooth me but I push her down. We are almost to the interstate and my head is throbbing from the overwhelming scent.
I will survive as a human. I have to. I can't let them find us. They can't find me in the city they can't.
"Andie you're insane! We have no money! We have no ID we have nothing how do you expect us to survive???," Amaya shrieks. I ignore her. It doesn't matter. none of that matters we will find a way we will survive.
I finally make it to the edge of the woods. Pain rips through me as I shift back into my human state.
"s**t," I grumble. I completely forgot that when you shift your clothes are shredded and I didn't bring any. Then again I didn't have anything to bring. I stumble forward to the edge of the road and collapse. Pain and cold rake my body and I can no longer hold myself up. Shifting took its toll on my fragile body. As darkness crept into the edges of my vision a pair of headlights grow closer coming to a stop. The sound of a car door slamming is the last thing I hear.
