Pretty much the instant we step outside my parents’ house, not even making it all the way across the front porch, Ronnie exhales the biggest breath I’ve ever heard from someone so small. I turn to see that she’s doubled over, her hands grasping her knees and her face pointed at the ground as she takes a few more of those big breaths. “Ronnie?” I call out uncertainly, panic setting in. “Yeah, I’m okay,” she assures me after a moment, slowly straightening herself.
