Chapter 1 Rejected Before the Pack
The night of the mating ceremony should have been the happiest night of Lyra Vale’s life.
Instead, it became the night she wished the earth would swallow her whole.
The pack hall was filled with wolves celebrating their coming-of-age night. Music echoed through the large wooden building, and laughter bounced off the stone walls. Lanterns glowed softly from the ceiling, casting warm light over the crowd.
For most wolves, tonight meant only one thing.
Finding their mate.
Lyra stood quietly near the edge of the hall, clutching the fabric of her simple grey dress. Unlike the other girls who wore bright gowns and sparkling jewelry, her clothes were plain. Omegas were never expected to shine.
They were expected to serve.
“Move, omega,” someone muttered as they brushed past her.
Lyra lowered her head quickly. She was used to it by now.
Ignored. Mocked. Invisible.
But tonight felt different.
Ever since the sun set, her wolf had been restless inside her. A strange warmth spread through her chest, making her heart race.
Her mate was here.
Somewhere in this room.
Her fingers trembled slightly as excitement and fear tangled together inside her.
What if her mate rejected her?
The thought sent a chill through her spine.
Before she could think further, the large wooden doors of the hall burst open.
The entire room fell silent.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the floor.
Every wolf in the hall instinctively stepped aside as a tall figure walked inside.
Alpha Kael Draven.
The most feared Alpha in the north.
His presence alone made the air feel heavier. His broad shoulders were wrapped in a dark coat, and his sharp silver eyes scanned the room like a predator observing prey.
Power rolled off him like a storm.
Lyra felt it immediately.
And then—
Her breath caught.
Her wolf stirred violently inside her chest.
Mate.
The word slammed into her mind like thunder.
No.
Her heart began pounding wildly.
It couldn’t be.
But the scent in the air confirmed it. Strong. Commanding. Impossible to ignore.
Alpha Kael Draven was her mate.
Lyra’s stomach twisted with panic.
An omega… mated to the most powerful Alpha alive?
This couldn’t end well.
As if sensing her gaze, Kael’s eyes suddenly snapped toward her.
For a moment, time froze.
Their eyes locked across the crowded hall.
Shock flashed across his face.
He felt it too.
The bond.
Murmurs spread quickly through the room as the Alpha slowly walked toward her.
Each step felt like thunder against the wooden floor.
Lyra’s heart pounded harder with every step he took.
Soon the entire pack realized what was happening.
The Alpha had found his mate.
And she was…
An omega.
Whispers filled the hall.
“No way…”
“The Alpha’s mate is her?”
“This must be a mistake.”
Lyra could barely breathe as Kael stopped in front of her. His towering presence made her feel smaller than ever.
For a moment, he simply stared at her.
Cold.
Calculating.
Then his expression darkened.
Disgust flickered in his eyes.
The bond in Lyra’s chest tightened painfully.
Finally, Kael spoke.
His deep voice echoed across the silent hall.
“I, Alpha Kael Draven…”
Lyra’s heart leapt.
“…reject you as my mate.”
The words shattered through her like glass.
Gasps erupted from the crowd.
Lyra felt the bond snap violently inside her chest, sending a wave of pain through her body.
Her knees hit the floor before she could stop herself.
Tears blurred her vision.
The humiliation burned worse than the pain.
Above her, Kael’s cold voice rang out once more.
“You are unworthy of standing beside an Alpha.”
The pack hall erupted with whispers and cruel laughter.
And Lyra realized something in that moment.
Her life had just been destroyed.
