Chapter 6 When the Alpha Snaps

641 Words
Silence pressed heavily against the night. Kael stood a few steps away from Lyra and Aiden, his silver eyes locked on the scene before him—the Gamma standing protectively in front of her. His rejected mate. His property. His wolf snarled violently inside him. “I asked a question,” Kael said, his voice dangerously calm. “Why were you touching what belongs to me?” Lyra flinched at the word belongs. Aiden didn’t. He straightened, deliberately placing himself more firmly between Kael and Lyra. “She almost died,” Aiden said. “That’s what happened.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “That does not answer my question.” “The rogues targeted her,” Aiden continued. “She needs protection. Real protection—not isolation and fear.” Something dark snapped. In a blink, Kael crossed the distance between them. His hand shot out and slammed Aiden against the nearest stone pillar. The impact cracked the air. Lyra gasped. “Stop!” Kael had Aiden lifted off the ground by his collar, his Alpha aura exploding outward, crushing and suffocating. “I didn’t give you permission,” Kael growled, “to decide what she needs.” Aiden struggled to breathe, but he didn’t look away. “You rejected her,” he forced out. “You don’t get to claim her now.” That did it. Kael’s fist slammed into the stone beside Aiden’s head, shattering rock. “Say it again,” Kael said quietly, “and I will forget you are my Gamma.” Lyra ran forward without thinking. “Enough!” Both men froze. Kael turned slowly toward her. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, fear and fury burning in her eyes. “You don’t own me,” Lyra said, her voice shaking—but strong. “You lost that right when you rejected me.” The words hit Kael harder than any blow. For the first time, doubt flickered across his face. But his wolf was not done. “You stand with him now?” Kael asked coldly. “I stand with whoever doesn’t treat me like a thing,” Lyra replied. A dangerous silence followed. Then Kael released Aiden violently. Aiden collapsed to one knee, coughing. Kael turned away sharply. “Leave us,” he ordered. Aiden hesitated—then met Lyra’s gaze. “I’ll be close,” he said quietly. And then he left. Kael didn’t look at Lyra as the footsteps faded. “You’re a problem,” he said finally. Lyra laughed bitterly. “You noticed?” His hands clenched at his sides. “I rejected you because you’re dangerous,” he said. “Because whatever you are threatens my pack.” “And yet,” Lyra said softly, “I saved them tonight.” Kael turned to her then. Really looked at her. Moonlight wrapped around her like silver fire. And his wolf howled in confusion. “You don’t belong to him,” Kael said, voice rough. “And you don’t belong to anyone else.” Lyra lifted her chin. “Then stop treating me like I do.” For a moment, it looked like Kael might say something else. Something honest. Instead, he turned away. “You will stay under my watch from now on,” he said. “No guards. No Gammas.” Lyra’s heart sank. “You’re afraid,” she realized. Kael paused. Just for a second. Then he said quietly, “Yes.” And that frightened her more than his anger ever had. From the shadows above the garden, Selene watched the entire scene unfold. Her lips curved slowly into a smile. Perfect. The Alpha was losing control. The Gamma was getting close. And the omega? She was becoming dangerous. Selene whispered into the night, “Soon… you won’t choose between them.” “You’ll be dead.”
