CHAPTER 12 — The Seal Breaks

689 Words
The second explosion didn’t feel like sound. It felt like the ground itself exhaled. Ironfang mansion shook violently, stone cracking somewhere deep beneath the foundation. Dust rained from the ceiling. The lights flickered once… twice… then steadied into a sickly glow. Aiden pulled Lyra back instinctively. “Stay behind me.” But she wasn’t listening. Her eyes were fixed on the floor. On the point where the tremor kept returning. As if something below was tapping back. Kael moved forward, his presence tightening the air. “Report,” he barked into the corridor. A guard stumbled in, pale. “Alpha… the lower seals… they’re failing. The wards are collapsing one by one.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “That system has held for centuries,” he said sharply. “It’s breaking,” the guard whispered. Silence hit the room for half a second. Then— Another c***k echoed from below. This time closer. Aiden turned slightly toward Kael. “You need to evacuate the west wing.” Kael didn’t look at him. “Evacuate?” he repeated. His voice dropped. “This is my territory.” A low, unstable vibration rolled through the walls again. Lyra suddenly gasped. Her knees almost gave out. Aiden caught her. “Lyra!” But her gaze was distant now. Not fainting. Listening. “It’s calling again,” she whispered. Kael’s head snapped toward her. “What is calling you?” Lyra blinked slowly. Then answered in a voice that didn’t fully belong to her. “Something that remembers me.” A heavy silence followed. Even Kael didn’t respond immediately. Because that answer was not normal. Not logical. Not possible. Below them, deep under Ironfang mansion— Chains shattered. Not physically at first. Energetically. Like something had stopped believing in its own imprisonment. A glowing rune carved into ancient stone flickered… then cracked down the middle. A pressure built. Slow. Unstoppable. Then— A voice rose from the dark. Low. Ancient. Familiar. “Finally…” Above ground— Lyra staggered backward. Aiden grabbed her arm. “What is it? What do you hear?” Her breath shook. “I don’t know,” she whispered. “But it’s angry.” Kael stepped closer. For the first time, he looked unsettled. Not at her. But at the reaction inside her. Because her pulse was syncing with something beneath them. Exactly. Perfectly. Kael turned sharply. “Seal all lower access points. Now!” But another guard rushed in. “Alpha! The western ward is gone—something is already inside the lower corridors!” Kael’s eyes sharpened. “So it’s moving.” A loud BOOM echoed again. This time— The floor beneath Lyra cracked. A spiderweb of silver light spread outward from her feet. Aiden stepped back immediately. Kael froze. Because the cracks were not destruction. They were alignment. Like the building itself was responding to her. Lyra looked down. Her voice trembled. “I think it’s under me.” Kael’s expression darkened. “You are not going down there.” Lyra looked up at him sharply. “I didn’t say I was going anywhere.” A beat. Then— Another tremor. Stronger. The entire west wing doors slammed open violently as if pushed by invisible force. Cold air rushed in from below. And for the first time— Everyone heard it clearly. Not through walls. Not through stone. But inside their minds. A voice. Calling. Moonborne… Kael’s wolf surged violently. Aiden froze completely. Lyra’s breath hitched. Because she recognized it. She didn’t know how. But she did. And before anyone could stop her— Lyra took one step forward. Toward the opening in the floor. Toward the darkness below Ironfang. Kael grabbed her wrist instantly. “Don’t,” he said sharply. But she didn’t look at him. Her eyes were distant again. And when she spoke— It wasn’t fear. It was certainty. “It’s not waking for you.” A pause. Then she whispered: “It’s waking for me.” And below them— The final seal shattered. A blinding silver eruption burst upward from the depths of Ironfang. Swallowing the entire corridor in light.
