I couldn't breathe at all. Not when the King was in front of me, called me his mate and was burying his head in my neck, smelling me, inhaling every scent in me even though I was dirty. He didn't seem to mind. When he finally pulled away and I saw his face with his eyes back to normal, he looked like someone who had just consumed an overdose of hard drugs. “My King, you cannot do this.” that warrior from before stepped forward with a frown on his face. “She's a witch.” The King finally turned his eyes away from me, throwing a fierce glare at the warrior. “I haven't asked you to speak.” The warrior became quiet, afraid of receiving his wrath. “I will be taking her with me so you can send the others back.” I didn't dare look up to meet the eyes of the other prisoners as the guards unlocked the chains shackling me and I heard the rattle as it all dropped to the floor. The King grabbed my hand and started to drag me outside with him. He was walking too fast so I had to run to keep up. I was still not sure what was going on. It still hasn’t completely settled in yet. “Get in.” he opened the car door once we were outside and I hesitated, using a second to stare at my surrounding. There was so much sunlight and air outside which was something I haven't experienced in the last three years. Suddenly, I’m free. Was this all a dream? I hoped it wasn’t. This was going to be the beginning for me! “Would you like me to repeat myself?” I quickly came out of my reverie, going inside the car. I have never been in a car before so everything was unusual. It was quiet between us throughout even as we arrived at the palace and he gave orders to a group of maids to clean me up before he disappeared. I was washed thoroughly and dressed in the finest clothes I have ever seen. A glittering blue gown, adorned with diamonds that sparkled as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was tied up in a bun style, exposing my delicate neck. In just a few hours, I have become a different person, a different version of myself I didn't think I would ever see. I touched my bare neck, closing my eyes as I released slow breaths. “You look really beautiful, my dear.” someone patted my head behind me and my eyes quickly flew open as I turned around. There was a middle-aged woman staring at me with a kind smile. She guided me to sit on the bed and offered me a fruit juice which I was hesitant to take. “My name is Gwendolyn but you can call me Gwen. The king has personally assigned me to take care of you.” “Ohh...” I swallowed hard, not knowing what to say and not knowing where to keep my eyes. I kept clipping my fingers together and I think she noticed since she covered her hands with mine. “You're safe here, Gwen.” she assured me. “Now come, the King is waiting for you.” I froze, suddenly remembering what I learnt about werewolves a long time ago. Once they've found their mate, mating can no longer be delayed, they'll feel a need to possess every inch of the female, assert their dominance and if it is delayed even for a few days they might go into heat which in turn could drive them mad. I am not a werewolf so I could not feel any of these things but it would be different for him. Fear settled in the pit of my stomach as I stared at Gwen. “I-i don't think I’m ready yet.” I still haven't gotten enough time to think about everything that had just happened to me. And he is already thinking about mating. Just as heartless and selfish as I have heard about him. “What are you not ready for Maeve? I can tell you're hungry.” she looked concerned. A confused look entered my eyes and she smiled as if she finally figured out what I was thinking. “The King invited you to have dinner together and nothing else, okay?” “Ohhh...” I breathed in a sigh of relief. “I thought...” “You're so cute.” she laughed, leading me to stand with her. “Come, I'll take you there and maybe show you around the palace later.” “Thank you, Gwen.” I said and her smile only became brighter. She looked at me tenderly and I don't know why but she looked really happy. The King was already waiting at the dining table when I arrived. Gwen left us and I stood there, feeling how his eyes took me in. “Have a seat.” He finally said to me and I purposely took one that was at the far end of him. Our eyes locked and I noticed his frown. “Come here, Maeve.” He ordered rather fiercely, beckoning to me with his fingers. “I… I think this position is better.” “I won’t repeat myself.” I swallowed hard, knowing I couldn’t disobey him a second time. I folded my gown and went over to seat on the space that was prepared for me which was right next to him. I looked around the room, the dining table long enough to accommodate at least fifteen to twenty people. “Are we going to be eating by ourselves?” “Do you prefer if someone else joins us?” “No.” I shook my head as the silence reigned again, then I wondered if this whole thing felt only awkward to me. The servants soon came to serve us food and then they left just as quickly as they came. The King was quiet throughout half of the meal which I was grateful for since I didn’t know what to talk about with him without losing my guard. So I continued to gobble down food like a starved animal until he broke the silence. “I heard you lost all your memories.” Shock. I froze, struggling hard to swallow the food in my mouth while keeping my composure. I nodded my head slowly to his question. “And you got them back?” My eyes widened in shock and I was glad I was staring down into the plate of food in front of me or he’d have seen how flustered that question he threw made me. It wasn’t a question. It was more like a statement. Did he already know? There is no way. I have done nothing out of the ordinary yet. This could only happen if he was testing me. Yes. A test. I slowly raised my head to look at him, mustering a clueless look to my face as I lowered my gaze again, feigning sadness as I whispered, “I wish I did get them back.” “Mmm…” he hummed in thought. “That means you do not know what crimes you have committed, why you were locked up and who you are?” I nodded again. “Then how did you know your name was Maeve?” How did I know? Sh*t! I think I have been caught. Panic flooded my eyes immediately as my mind raced, working out ways to get out of this. How did I know my name was Maeve? Obviously because I got back my memories. I barely meet or talk to anyone at the cell so there was no need to exchange names. Plus, the guards only referred to me as the witch. I didn’t think that far before saying my name today. And that was so stupid of me. I didn’t think I of all people would make a mistake like this. I finally found the perfect lie and opened my mouth to speak. “Another witch once called me by that name when I was passing by. So I just thought that person knew me and that was probably my name.” “So, you assumed?” he c****d a brow, his eyes having a hint of amusement in them. I shifted in my seat, unease filling my heart as I nodded my head. If he knew I got back my memories, what would he do?
