I was afraid the King’s fiancée would make him punish me for grabbing her hair when he returned so I made my own plan.
Didn’t men love to see women weak? When a woman cries, there was just something about it that tugs at their heart and makes them so easy to control.
I doubt that would work on the King but it definitely works for most men so I began to cry all day, hoping the King would return sooner but he didn’t and I ended up with a headache.
Once Gwen got tired of consoling me and left, I quickly tried to rest so I didn’t hear when he arrived. I only saw the door open and only buried my head in the pillows on time and began to cry.
He was going to console me right? He was going to feel pity for me and tell me not to worry. I thought as I heard his powerful footsteps approaching but then he stopped and all I heard was my name slipping past his lips with such urgency.
“Maeve. get down!”
I can’t tell what it was but I suddenly felt the ominous air around me. I didn’t even think, I immediately rolled to the left just in time to feel a strong gust of wind pass me by.
It wasn’t ordinary. Not ordinary at all. f**k! Goosebumps spread down my arms quickly as I looked up, staring into the red eyes of what seemed like a shadow.
It had a skull for a head and a skeleton for a body, and very dark, it could blend with night. The only difference being that this one had sharp claws and long intimidating fangs that were sure to kill if it pierces into anyone.
My eyes widened in shock, seeing it jump down to where I had just been.
A loud growl sounded in the room and I looked just in time to see the King lunging in the air as he tackled the shadow with him and in a few seconds, he had already torn it apart furiously. Just when it went for its last strike, the shadow disappeared and I quickly looked around me, terrified, wondering if it was still lurking around somewhere.
“Maeve?”
I began to cry for real this time and I didn’t know when I jumped into his arms because I wasn’t sure anywhere else was safe. I sobbed on his chest, feeling how hard it was for the first time and he didn’t seem to mind.
He patted my hair back and whispered to me, “You’re fine okay?”
A few minutes later, Gwen and some guards rushed into the room and the King ordered them to find the shadow. Then he proceeded to carry me in his arms, princess style and left. He entered a room. A pretty dark room that seemed to embody the entity inside him.
I didn’t need to ask. I knew this was his room.
Why did he bring me here?
He placed me down then easily lit a few candles that lit up the room a bit but I couldn’t get rid of my fear still, I stared all around me before I asked.
“What was that thing?”
“Shouldn’t you know better?” He threw a look at me, making me even more confused. “Your people created it. They call it the shadow demon, it eats people.”
What? My brows furrowed in confusion.
Shadow demon? I have never heard of it.
“My people will never make something so terrible.” I quickly said, noticing how a smile both appeared and left his lips in a span of a second as if he was trying to hide something before looking at me.
“And how did you know that Maeve?” He asked. “You said you didn’t remember anything.”
Oh s**t! I just shot my own foot.
“I said I didn’t remember anything. It doesn’t mean I know nothing. Our people are not like that.”
“Again, how did you know? Did you meet any of them in the dungeon?”
I swallowed hard, thinking fast before I answered. “No. But I have heard stories about what happened. You—“ I quickly stopped, noticing something.
Since I arrived here, the King has only been trying to test me. He purposely corners me without warning which was easier for me to give myself away and damn it!
He had me well wrapped around his fingers.
“I really don’t know anything.” I began to cry, which was my best shot for now. “I just think they are not bad people at all.” Tears rolled down my cheeks easily.
“So naive.” He clicked his tongue, coming closer to me, he wiped my tears with a finger of his, staring into my eyes.
His stare seemed to have woken me up and I realized how comfortable I had gotten with him. It’s almost as if he casted a spell on me.
I even cried in his arms and now… now I’m in his room, trapped, and he’s standing so close to me, and—
“Maeve?” He whispered very low and sexy, God it did something to my nerves and my neuron’s because suddenly my heart was beating so fast.
“I-I think I might have to leave.” I quickly tried to run but he grabbed my hand before I could, pinning me against the wall as he whispered. “That thing might still be lurking outside. Are you sure you want to leave?”
He was letting me weigh my choices. That thing was sure as hell terrifying. I have never seen anything like it and I wasn’t sure why it would suddenly attack me.
Better to be eaten by the King than to be eaten by that thing. At least I would still be alive to exact my revenge on him.
“Have you made your choice?” He asked again,
“I.. I don’t feel too well, my King.”
“That’s not a problem.” He said as I summoned up the courage to look into his eyes. “I won’t hurt you.”
His eyes had changed, no longer emerald but a deeper shade of it . Fear seized me when he suddenly buried his head into my neck, I closed my eyes tight, expecting the pain that should follow but that was it. Once again, he was just sniffing me, deeply. A possessive growl left his lips and he continued taking in deep satisfied breaths of me.
“Did I tell you? You smell so good, so f*****g addicting.”
He opened his mouth and his teeth along with his scalding hot breath grazed my neck, causing me to shiver uncontrollably as I held my own breath, my stomach twisting in nervousness.
I needed to do something before this gets out of control!
