Adela felt they couldn’t arrive home fast enough. There was finally something to be excited about. Bypassing all the strangers in her house, she raced into her room and quickly beginning to get undressed. Adela and Brandon would have exactly five minutes to climb down the trellis. Looking out her window, thinking how great it was that night had already fallen on them as it would be easier to maneuver through her neighbors backyard undetected. Putting on her pants, Brandon busts through her door nearly giving adela a heart attack. “Brandon! Jeez, you scared me half to death” Adela says as she’s jumping with one leg trying to squeeze the other in her jeans “Del, Ellie is here!” He looked scared, like Adela would back out and want stay. Holding his breath, waiting to hear her response. “Brandon, we cant worry about him now. Let’s go” she says as she’s climbing out of the window. Brandon sighed in relief but felt heart broken that his sister couldn’t think about the one she loved. His hatred for their mother was immeasurable. Cursing under his breath as he climbs down the trellis and almost slipping. Having to maneuver through their neighbors backyards quietly only left them with their own thoughts. While planning on how to free themselves, he had considered murder. It could’ve worked because of the abuse they both endured from Margrette and Joshua. His mother didn’t have a maternal instinct at all and regrets all the time wasted trying to gain her love and approval. He almost went through with his own plan when he came home to his mother and Joshua beating his already unconscious sister a couple days ago. But Adela assured him things would work out the way they were supposed to. Jumping over the last fence, came time for them to trek through the woods for a little bit. Brandon let out a snort when Adela held out an old ass torch. “Shut up, its all I could find. Mother would know if a flashlight was missing and be able to trace out steps!” They both were feeling a little easier, but still both were quiet and lost in their own thoughts. They are traveling to New Orleans, but their new start wont be a struggle. Brandon couldn’t wait to see Clarence. Brandon’s Homosexuality became the target on his back and it was a key in the harassment by Joshua. That was the breaking point for Adela. No one mattered more to her than Brandon. Not even Elliot. Just as they were so the halfway point through the woods a loud howl made them stop in their tracks and Adela quickly put out the torch. “Could it be a werewolf?” Brandon whispered. Adela just put her fingers to her lips and grabbed his hand. Thankfully she has been in and out of this wooded area her entire life, she knew where she was going. By the time they reached their getaway car they were out of breath. All that mattered was that they were free. Adela finally smiled while starting the car. “Get some sleep, I’ll wake you up when its your turn to drive” it took him all of two minutes to pass out. She was tired too but too excited to care. Traveling to New Orleans from Georgia would be a little over eight hours so they would divide the driving time easily. Adela couldn’t allow herself to regret not speaking with Elliot. She had anger in her heart for him too. Recalling the way he didn’t even say goodbye as he left she felt angry again. He took her heart when he walked out on her, and never felt regret for it. Remembering the countless calls and text messages then all the emails that went unanswered. She couldn’t allow herself to feel sadness. Anger got her this far, and just a little bit farther and her twenty-two years will be like a nightmare she’s woken from. She had many goals and ambitions and finally felt happy that she could get a move on with her life.
While Adela continued on her drive, her mind drifted to New Mexico... “Ellie, wake up” she shook him, she had climbed through his dorm window “Dela? What’s going on?” Elliot said with sleep still in his eyes “Ellie, I’m running away and I don’t want to leave without you, please come with me” he would do anything for her, he didn’t even think about his decision. Packing his clothes and then packing their stuff in his truck, he began driving with no direction. It wasn’t until Adela said New Mexico did he remember telling her about his uncle’s lake house. He began to try and come up with things that might’ve happened to her to make her do something extreme, but no matter how hard he tried, Adela wouldn’t tell him. Life was as good as it could be for eighteen year olds. They struggled but naïvely thought things would work out because they were free to be with each other. It wasn’t until the fifth month they were living at his uncle’s house when Adela got the call. Turning to Elliot with fear in his eyes, he just went to into autopilot. “Ellie, it was Brandon. They’re abusing him and I have to go back!” But when Adela turned around he was already packing his things “Ellie? Please say something” but she could tell he wasn’t listening and before long she was sitting in the lake house by herself, stranded in a state by herself… “Del, its my turn to drive” Brandons voice brings her back to the present. “Okay…” she begins to pull over. Switching places Brandon tells her to get some sleep but she knows she wont get any sleep that’ll be restful. Elliot’s face when he was packing his things plagued her mind as she drifted to sleep. No matter the times he glanced at Adela’s face she still had the same haunted expression. ‘We will start over, she needs this’ he thought to himself finally crossing into the Louisiana border, he begins to look for a pay phone to call Clarence. It would be another forty-five minutes before they arrived to their new home and he felt it getting hard to contain his excitement. As he turned into town, he made sure to note all the stores and shops they’d both want to visit. Turning into a Suburb and driving to the end of the cul-de-sac, he squealed seeing Clarence in the drive way. Brandon never thought he’d find love but here he was, getting ready to spend the rest of his life in bliss with his perfect person. His squeal woke up Adela, for which she was thankful because she was having a nightmare. Before grabbing their bags Brandon and Clarence shared their first kiss with one another. It made Adela feel happy because her brother was finally happy. She felt so much hope for them. “ Gods, this kitchen is beautiful” Brandon commented to Clarence. “Adela, I bought new kitchenware and stuff because I know you like to cook” Adela turned around and smiled sleepily “Call me Del, we don’t need formalities at all” Brandon and Clarence just smiled and took Adela’s things to her room. She was so exhausted she didn’t even hear them ask if she was hungry. This time her sleep would be blissful. “How long do you reckon she will sleep?” Clarence asked. He was worried for her. “Honestly I don’t know but we should wake her up every so often and shove some food and water down her throat” Brandon chuckled. He was too excited to sleep and just spent hours wandering through the house and touching everything. He finally made his way to the bedroom he’d be sharing with Clarence and began to unpack his things. It was well past four in the morning when he finally laid down next to his boyfriend. He fell asleep feeling comforted and safe but his heart soared at the fact that his and his sister were finally free. It wouldn’t be for three days but eventually Adela would feel rested enough. Coming down stairs, she already smelled breakfast. “Good morning! You slept for three days!” Brandon exclaimed. She didn’t say a word, just poured coffee in a mug and drank slowly. “What have I missed?” She turned to the couple “nothing really, Brandon was just telling me that you wanted to open up an occult shop, right?” Adela nodded while Brandon was handing her a plate with over easy eggs and sausage on it. The way Adela scarfed her food down you’d think she never ate before. “We tried to make you eat some bread and drink som broth. You hit me in the face in your sleep” Brandon cupped his cheek and Clarence started laughing “whoops, I’m so sorry” but they all then burst into loud laughter. Both Adela and Brandon felt so safe to be happy.
