Lilian:
The wind was starting to grow stronger, almost as if it could spin a person into the air in the next minute.
As the strong wind continued to build up, the sky also grew darker. Even though it was two in the afternoon, it felt like evening already.
We walked in the wind for over forty minutes, and I was so cold that I began shivering.
The road was getting worse as we trudged on, and I had not seen a single house around me since ten minutes ago, but the girl continued walking out without any intention of stopping.
I had a bad feeling in my heart so I stopped and looked warily at the girl. "How far away is your house?"
The girl suddenly stopped and turned back, not looking at me first, but rather at her surroundings before turning her attention to me.
The uneasy feeling in my heart grew even stronger. Cautiously, I took a few steps back and gripped the bags in my hand even harder.
These could be used as weapons in a pinch. Even though there was a limit to what they could do, they could still delay any attackers for even just a moment.
What was more, she had already paid for the pastries. They no longer belonged to me, so I would not feel bad about having to ruin them.
"So, you’ve figured it out? I thought I'd wait until we reached the mountains before I made my move." The girl's voice changed, becoming deep and hoarse, and there was an unconcealable look of wickedness in her eyes as she looked at me.
Was that a man's voice? That meant that this was no girl at all, but rather a man dressed up as a little girl?
I had never seen this person before, so why was he targeting me? Was it because of my looks, or could it be something else entirely?
I rarely ever visited these parts so I was completely unfamiliar with the area. He had to have chosen this place to make sure that I would not be able to get away. My only hope right now was to run back to where I came from.
Would I be able to outrun him, though? Moreover, it seemed like a large storm was going to start soon, which would definitely interfere with my vision and judgment, making it easy for me to make a wrong turn and get lost.
What should I do? What am I supposed to do in this situation?
I pretended to be scared and asked in a feigned sob, "I don't know you and I've never done anything bad to you. Why would you trick me and lead me to this place? What are you planning to do to me?
With no clear plan in mind, there was nothing I could do but stall for time.
A woman's display of fear and weakness can be an effective tool to lower the enemy's guard. It was a tactic I used when I first met Arthur. It worked well enough on him. I only hoped that it could save me now.
Sure enough, the man did not attack me directly. Instead, he eyed me like a cat playfully watching a trembling mouse as he slowly walked toward me.
Each time I took a step back, he followed. I continued acting as if I were shivering in fear, but in fact, I was slowly turning my body sideways in preparation to run.
"That's right, it's just as you said. You don't know me and I don't know you either. No relation, no grudges or the like." The man seemed to be drawing out his sentence deliberately. He pulled his sleeves up. "Unfortunately, you’ve messed with the wrong person, girl."
I have messed with the wrong person? Does that mean that he had been sent by someone?
Who? Who would send people after me?
The first person that came to mind was Arthur. After all, Andrew had come to warn me for his sake, but it made little sense. Not to mention that I have never done anything to offend him. He had plenty of time to do with me what he wished in the last three years if there truly was a grudge involved.
He could have made me disappear at any time. In fact, he would not have even needed to pay me.
Who else could it be if not him, then?
"Well well well, have a look at this pretty little face. It would be such a shame to mess it all up, but alas, what can I do? I'm afraid I have no choice but to ruin that pretty little face of yours!" While speaking, the man pulled a dagger out of his pocket.
The cold glint of his dagger paired with his ferocious expression made for a terrifying sight in the dreary weather.
Oh, no!
When I saw the man’s dagger approach my face, I threw the bags of pastries right at his face as hard as I could.
I was sure the heavy bags definitely hurt him because I could hear him curse at me.
"You little b***h, how dare you hit me?"
I turned and ran as fast as I could, thankful that I could remember the way back.
“Rumble…”
Thunder suddenly reverberated through the air, followed by large droplets of rainwater that pelted me from above.
The torrential rain condensed into a near-solid curtain, so dense that I could hardly see the way ahead. I pulled the hood of the cloak over my head and wiped the droplets off my face so that I could see in front of me.
"Stop right there, you little b***h!"
Behind me came the angry howl of the man, but I ignored him and continued running as fast as I could.
Faster, faster! I had to get away from here!
Suddenly, the howl of the man disappeared from behind me, and I turned around subconsciously to take a look.
What I saw nearly sent my heart flying.
He had transformed into his wolf form and bolted quickly through the rain, several times faster than he was before. It looked like he was going to catch up to me soon.
Oh, God! Why was I so stupid? I could have run faster if I had just transformed into a wolf! Without any care for the clothes falling off my body, I ran for dear life.
There was a small forest to the left of me just ahead, and there were houses beyond that. There had to be people living there. I could ask them for help.
It was a good idea, but I did not account for the fact that my plans may not work out every time.
I was about to turn left, but my heart was suddenly beating like mad. Hit by a feeling of uncertainty, I gave up on the forest and turned right instead, but as soon as I did, that man—no, the wolf—was in front of me. He leaped to the ground and stopped right between me and the house, blocking my way.
This man was obviously a Beta. Be it in terms of physical strength or fighting capabilities, I was no match for him, not that I ever thought about contesting him in strength, to begin with.
It was futile to resist in front of absolute suppression of force.
Unfortunately, it seemed like I had no choice but to fight him head-on, but there was no possible way that I was going to win this fight. What should I do?
