Rogue Vampire

(Kyle) I stood at the edge of the forest behind the school, my eyes scanning the trees as I watched my team of warriors prepare to venture into the woods. I had tasked them with tracking a new scent that had been reported in the area - a vampire scent that was not my mate's. The air was thick with anticipation and a faint hum of tension that only those attuned to the supernatural could sense. Their forms shifted subtly, muscles coiling beneath thick fur, eyes glowing with readiness. Each of them had been chosen for their keen senses and unwavering loyalty, qualities vital for what was to come. Jousett’s description of the scent had been precise and troubling. It wasn’t my mate’s scent, which I knew intimately - soft, warm, and familiar. Yes, I have already memorized her scent even though she smelled like a vampire now, but this was something darker, something rogue. The idea that a rogue vampire was lurking near the school full of kids and where my mate is sent a shiver down my spine. “Stay alert,” I commanded softly, voice low but firm. My warriors nodded, their expressions grim but determined. With a surge of energy, I motioned for them to move out. They slipped silently into the woods, their forms blending seamlessly with the shadows. The scent trail was faint but discernible - an oily, metallic aroma that clung stubbornly to the damp earth and decaying leaves. It was a scent that spoke of chaos, violence and death, a scent that had no place in the peaceful woods we called our territory. The pack moved in coordinated silence, their noses to the ground, following the faintest whiffs of the rogue vampire’s trail. The forest was thick and tangled, branches grabbing at their fur, roots threatening to trip them up. Still, they pressed on, guided solely by their heightened senses. The scent grew slightly stronger in certain patches, leading them deeper into the woods, past fallen logs and overgrown underbrush. Every step was deliberate, every breath measured, as they hunted for the elusive prey. Hours seemed to pass in silence - save for the rustling leaves and the distant call of creatures. Despite their skills, my warriors found no sign of the rogue vampire - no blood spatters, no claw marks, no sign of recent activity. The trail, which had seemed promising at first, now appeared to have gone cold. The scent was faint, as if whatever creature had been here had already moved on or masked its trail effectively. “Alpha, I don’t think the vampire is here anymore. The trail’s gone cold.” Chris’s voice echoed in my mind, brief and pragmatic. I could sense his frustration and concern. We’d expected a confrontation, or at least some evidence of activity, but the woods had offered only silence. I stepped back from the tree line, watching my warriors regroup. They returned with expressions of both disappointment and worry. “Nothing,” Jackson reported, his voice tight with frustration and added, “The trail just disappeared. No signs of a struggle, no recent activity. It’s like they vanished into thin air.” I clenched my fists, feeling the weight of the uncertainty. We’d come here prepared for a fight, for answers, but all we had was a faint scent and a growing sense of unease. The rogue vampire was clever, maybe even more cunning than we’d anticipated. Or perhaps it wasn’t here at all. Perhaps it had been passing through, or it was avoiding us deliberately. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was more than just a simple rogue. The scent had sounded off from the start, too wild, too unrestrained. It hinted at a creature not just rogue but unhinged - a vampire who had abandoned the rules, the coven’s control, and perhaps even their basic humanity. That kind of creature was dangerous, unpredictable, and capable of anything. ‘Asher, anything over there?’ I linked my Beta. ‘No, Alpha. Everything is quiet right now. Jousett is watching TV with her parents’ Asher linked back. ‘We found nothing here. I’m sending the warriors back, and I’ll relieve you’ I said before cutting off the link. “Alright everyone, you can head back to the pack. If the rogue vampire comes back or shows signs of activity, we’ll be ready. Until then, stay vigilant. Keep your senses sharp,” I told my warriors, my voice steady. “Yes, alpha,” they said, and nodded in unison, understanding the gravity of the situation. We moved as a pack, silent shadows slipping back through the trees, retracing our steps to the safety of the school grounds. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the evening sky transformed into a breathtaking masterpiece, first blushing with soft pinks and vibrant oranges near the skyline. I knew the day was far from over, and the threat of this rogue vampire still loomed in the back of my mind. Back at the edge of the woods, I took one last look into the darkness, feeling a mixture of frustration and resolve. The scent trail had led us nowhere, but I knew better than to dismiss the possibility that this creature was still out there, lurking, waiting. Rogue vampires didn’t follow rules; they thrived in chaos. And I had every intention of finding out what this one was planning. I got to my mate’s house and saw her in the living room window, sitting down with her adopted parents watching the movie ‘Insidious’. Asher was also watching the movie from far away. I shook my head with a chuckle. “How’s the movie?” I asked Asher, making him jump. “Damn it Kyle, you scared me,” he said, looking back at the TV and I couldn’t help but chuckle. “You can head back to the pack if you want,” I told him. “I’ll head back when the movie is over. This movie is good,” he said, and I chuckled. We watched the movie. Jousett’s mom screamed in one part, making me chuckled. “I was thinking, what if Jousett doesn’t know she’s a vampire? I mean, I have been watching her, and she does everything like any other human,” Asher said. I thought about it for a bit, and it was possible that she didn’t know. “Could be, but for her not to know means that magic was involved,” I said and looked towards my mate. The movie had just finished, and she was hugging her adopted parents before they went up the stairs, probably to their room. My mate turned off the tv and began to clean up. I watched her go to the kitchen and began to clean up the kitchen. After the kitchen was cleaned, she grabbed a small piece of chocolate cake before sitting down with a sigh. I could tell she was lost in thought. My wolf stirred, wanting to be closer to her. "What do you think is going through her mind?" Asher asked. "I have no idea," I said honestly. "Kyle, I have never seen you so intrigued about someone. Why this girl?" Asher asked, and I looked at him before looking back at my mate. "She's... she's my mate," I admitted, making him look at me with wide eyes. "Your mate. Damn, and you didn't want a mate in the first place. How does it feel?" he asked. "I- I don't know. I want to stay away, but the mate bond is too strong. The need to protect her is too strong. Yes, I didn't want a mate before, but now that I have her... I'm not letting her go, and I'm going to protect her no matter what," I said with conviction. Asher patted my shoulder and I could see the smile in his eyes. "Asher, I want you to go back to the pack and look into witches who work with vampires and see if anyone knows Jousett," I said. "Yes, alpha," he said and turned running into the woods. I have no idea what’s going on, but I was going to find out. First my mate and then this rogue vampire who had vanished. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The rogue vampire’s scent might have vanished, but its presence lingered in the air, in the shadows, and in my mind. We would hunt again, and next time, we wouldn’t leave without answers. Because in this game of predators and prey, only one could walk away victorious. And I intended for it to be us. ***
