The Hunters Pray

Scavengers

^Loras point of view^

It’s been two days since Lora arrived at the small town that was spilled by the highway, it’s also been two days since Lora killed the creature that wanted to kill her.  She hasn’t moved away or gone back to the city, she made a little camp next to a large tree stomp that provided her with some cover and a way to get fire without making too much light. Sadly, she couldn’t stay here for much longer since her food supplies were almost gone, she had to venture back into the city with hopes of finding food.

As soon as Lora started moving towards the town, she saw something that she wasn’t expecting to see, at least 4 humans were checking the houses that she wanted to check, and of course one of the houses that they checked was the one where she fought for her life. And of course, these people seem to be puzzled by the fact that there was a dead creature laying in the house. Lora didn’t know what to do, on one hand, maybe these people could help her survive, but on the other hand, they might try to hurt her, or even kill her. She had to make a choice here because she was at a bad stop and those people could spot her. And after some thought, Lora decided to try her luck and meet these people.

She slowly moved in their direction making her hands visible on the sides so they would know that she had no weapons or ways to hurt them. After a few more steps she heard ‘Everyone stop we have a situation here’ one of the humans shouted and Lora saw that he was looking straight at her. 

‘What is it, Kyle?’ Lora heard another voice

‘ Don’t tell me you found another piece of weird furniture that you want to show off’ third voice followed the second one.

‘ I wish it would be that, but you won’t believe it, a girl is standing like fifteen meters away from me’ the guy who seemed to be named Kyle said.

‘ You are joking right?’ one of the voices sounded more concerned than before.

‘I wish I was, but she is standing right there’ Kyle said with complete seriousness in his voice.

‘My name is Lora, and I mean no harm, I saw you walking around, and it’s been so long since I’ve seen any other humans, I had to come and try to meet you’ Lora said with her voice shaking, she felt scared, but she decided to stand firm and see what will happen.

‘Kyle you weren’t lying, you saw us? Well, you must be pretty good at scouting areas since we try to stay hidden most of the time. My name is Aron, I am the leader of this scavenger’s group, I assume that it was you who made the mess in the green double-story house over there?’ A tall, brown-skinned guy said while coming closer towards her.

‘ That was me, I was looking for some food, and then that creature appeared out of nowhere, for a second I thought that I was dead, but somehow I managed to stop him’ Lora said feeling a bit proud that she survived the encounter.

‘ For food, you said, well we are doing the same thing, this is my team, that loudmouth over there is Kyle, the girl that is next to him is Sarah, and the short one over there is Felix. We call ourselves scavengers since that’s what we do mostly, we look for goods that we can use or trade and then use or trade them for other goods. It is nice to meet you Lora’ Aron said while putting his hand forward showing that he wants to shake Lora’s hand.   

‘It is nice to meet all of you, I haven’t spoken to other humans for almost two years now, it almost feels strange’ Lora said while smiling and shaking Aron’s hand.

One after another remaining scavengers approached Lora and introduced themselves, they all seemed to be quite friendly which made Lora happy inside. For her, it seemed that these four people were like family, Kyle and Felix seemed to be annoying each other all the time, while Sarah was just facepalming herself while looking at them, and Aron seemed to act like the father of these three. After all, he was the oldest one in the group, Kyle was still just 17 and Felix was 19, Sarah was 23, and as Aron said he was 33.

After they were done with the introductions, they invited Lora to join them and have dinner together, they were planning to make a small camp in the woods where Lora was staying these two days, and once she mentioned the place she was staying before all of them was both surprised and glad to hear what Lora had to say. They followed Lora to the tree stump and started to set up the camp.

When evening came and they were eating food that scavengers gladly shared with Lora, they all shared some of the stories of their past lives, jokes that were both stupid and silly and sometimes even strange, but for Lora, all of this felt amazing, she hasn’t had anyone in her life for so long ever since her father died, she was alone. But then Lora spaced out for a second, she wasn’t alone just a few days ago, there was a stranger that show her how to be a better hunter, a person that made her want to fight again, ‘I wonder if you are still alive Rin if so I hope that we will meet again and maybe then I will teach you how to be a better hunter’ Lora thought with sadness inside of her.

‘Hey, Lora are you finishing that? Because if you are not, I will help you out, Felix shouted pointing towards the bowl of food that Lora had in her hand.

‘Sorry Felix, but I will finish this myself’ Lora said with a huge smile, she felt happy and safe, and she wanted to keep this feeling with her.
