EPISODE 11: THE EXPANSION
Six months after the documentary aired.
Elena’s phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
"CEO of TokyoTech wants to meet."
"Board of BerlinCorp is requesting a call."
"President of Nigeria is inviting you to speak."
Luca looked at the list and laughed. "We broke the internet and now the world wants us."
Elena was 39. COO. Still in sneakers.
Luca was 46. CEO. Still leaving at 5pm.
But the company was about to get 10x bigger.
---
The proposal was simple.
"Moretti Industries Global."
75 new offices.
25 countries.
1 million new employees.
"All with Moretti Policies," Elena said in the boardroom. "Or we don’t do it."
The board was nervous. "That’s $50 billion."
Luca leaned back. "We have $50 billion."
Elena added: "And we have something more valuable. Proof that it works."
The vote was unanimous.
---
The first trip was Tokyo.
Luca and Elena. Together.
No more separate travel.
Milo, 18, came too. Gap year before Harvard.
Rose, 13, came for 2 weeks. School break.
Twins, 11, stayed home with nanny.
The Tokyo office opening was chaos.
5000 people outside.
News helicopters.
Protesters and supporters.
A reporter shouted: "Mrs Moretti! Will Japanese women get the same leave?"
Elena grabbed the mic. "Better. They’ll get 18 months."
The crowd went wild.
---
Inside the new office, Elena cried.
The daycare had 100 babies.
All colors. All languages.
All getting free care so their parents could work.
"This," Elena whispered to Luca. "This is why."
Luca kissed her forehead. "I know."
---
Berlin was next.
Cold. Efficient. Skeptical.
The German board asked: "How will this affect productivity?"
Elena pulled up data. "Our productivity went up 40% after parental leave."
Silence. Then nods.
Luca added: "And our profits went up 200%."
More nods.
That night, they walked along the river.
Milo took photos.
Rose sketched.
"Feels like a family trip," Rose said.
"It is," Elena said.
---
Dubai was hard.
The laws were different. The culture was different.
"We can’t offer 1 year leave to women only," the local partner said.
"Then we offer it to everyone," Elena said. "Men and women."
It took 3 months of negotiations.
But they got it.
The first daycare in Dubai for a Fortune 500 company.
Elena and Luca stood outside, exhausted.
"Was it worth it?" Luca asked.
Elena looked at the 50 women going inside with their babies. "Ask me in 10 years."
---
Nigeria broke them.
Elena met a line of 2000 women applying for 200 jobs.
Single moms. Widows. Students.
One woman, Amina, 24, had 3 kids. "I will work 24 hours if you let me," she said.
Elena hired her. And 199 others.
That night Elena couldn’t sleep.
"We’re not doing enough," she told Luca.
Luca held her. "We’re doing everything we can."
---
Back home, it was chaos.
Kids were adjusting.
House was loud.
Dog ate another sock.
Milo: "I’m leaving for Harvard in 2 months."
Rose: "I have an art show next week."
Twins: "We have science fair!"
Elena and Luca looked at each other.
"We’re missing it," Elena whispered.
"Then we stop," Luca said. "For now."
---
They called an emergency board meeting.
"We’re pausing expansion," Luca announced.
The board gasped.
"For how long?"
"For as long as it takes to be home," Elena said. "2 years. Maybe 3."
Stock dropped 5% that day.
Then rose 10% the next week.
Because people trusted them more.
---
Those 2 years were golden.
No travel.
No late nights.
Just home.
Milo went to Harvard. Came home every break.
Rose got into RISD.
Twins hit puberty. It was loud.
Elena and Luca ran the company from home.
Board meetings on Zoom.
Kids walking in with snacks.
Dog barking in background.
It worked.
---
Year 2 of the pause.
The foundation got bigger.
Milo was running programs from Harvard.
"Students for Moretti Foundation" had 50 chapters.
Rose was painting murals in the new daycares.
Twins were teaching coding to kids of employees.
---
Year 3. They were ready.
"Okay," Luca said. "One more push. Together."
Elena nodded. "Together."
75 offices.
In 18 months.
This time they brought the kids on every trip.
School on the plane.
Homework in hotel rooms.
Art shows in new cities.
It was messy. It was perfect.
---
The last office opened in Sydney.
Elena cut the ribbon.
Luca held her hand.
All 4 kids behind them.
1 million employees worldwide.
All with parental leave.
All with childcare.
All with dignity.
A reporter asked: "What’s next?"
Elena and Luca looked at each other.
"Home," they said together.
The flight home was 16 hours.
All 6 of them. First class.
Milo was reading for Harvard.
Rose was drawing.
Twins were fighting over the iPad.
Elena and Luca held hands and slept.
For the first time in 3 years, they weren’t thinking about the next meeting.
---
Home felt different.
Bigger. Louder. Better.
The dog didn’t recognize them at first.
"Welcome home," the housekeeper said, crying.
---
The company ran without them for 3 weeks.
No calls. No emails. No problems.
Elena told Luca: "We built something that doesn’t need us."
Luca: "That’s the best thing we ever did."
---
Milo’s first semester at Harvard.
He called every Sunday. "I started a class. ‘Business with a Conscience.’ 200 students signed up."
Elena cried.
Rose’s first semester at RISD.
She sent a painting. Title: "The World Tour"
It was of airports. Hotel rooms. But in the middle: her family, holding hands.
Lucas Jr and Lily, 12, started middle school.
They ran for student council. Won.
Campaign slogan: "Be Kind. Like the Morettis."
---
Five years after the expansion.
Moretti Industries:
- 2 million employees
- 80 countries
- $800 billion valuation
But the metric Elena tracked:
92% employee retention.
94% employee satisfaction.
100% of employees said "I can have a family and a career here."
---
The White House invited them.
The President gave them an award.
"The Moretti Medal for Changing How America Works."
Elena’s speech: "We didn’t invent kindness. We just put it in the employee handbook."
Standing ovation.
Luca’s speech: "I’m just the guy who married someone smarter than me."
Everyone laughed.
---
15th anniversary.
They didn’t do a big wedding.
They did a family dinner.
Milo came from Harvard.
Rose came from RISD.
Twins came from school.
Luca cooked. Burned the steak.
Elena laughed.
Kids took pictures.
After dinner, Luca took Elena to the roof.
"10 years since the expansion started," he said.
"And we survived," Elena said.
"We thrived," Luca corrected. "Because we chose us."
---
That night Elena wrote.
Chapter 11: THE EXPANSION
About the travel.
About the fear.
About the choice to come home.
About the choice to go again.
She wrote until 4am.
Luca found her asleep on the laptop.
He carried her to bed.
---
The next board meeting.
"We’re done expanding," Luca said.
The board was shocked.
"Why?"
"Because," Elena said. "We’re big enough. Now we go deep."
New plan: Invest in current employees.
Better pay.
Better benefits.
Better lives.
The board approved.
---
Milo graduated Harvard.
Valedictorian speech: "My parents taught me that the best business model is love."
Rose graduated RISD.
Her final project: A 20-foot mural called "The Moretti Wall"
It was in the company lobby.
2000 employees painted on it.
Twins, 15, started interning.
Lucas Jr in finance.
Lily in HR.
"Training the next COO and CEO," Luca said.
---
Today.
Elena is 44.
Luca is 47.
4 adult-ish kids.
1 foundation that gave away $2 billion.
They still make pancakes on Saturdays.
They still fight about small things.
They still make up with big kisses.
Last night, Luca asked: "Any regrets?"
Elena thought. "Only that we waited so long to start."
Luca kissed her. "We started exactly when we were supposed to."
Outside, the city.
Inside, the family.
Everywhere, the legacy.
The expansion wasn’t about offices.
It was about expanding love.
