The Contract
EPISODE 1: THE CONTRACT The rain was hitting the windows of The Obsidian like bullets. Elena Rose hadn’t slept in 48 hours. Her son, Milo, was sick again. Fever 104. The hospital bill in her hand said $8,742. Her bank account said $217. She was 24, a single mom, and out of options. The apartment was small. One bedroom that smelled like medicine and old blankets. Paint was peeling in the corner above the window. The heater had been broken for two weeks and it was November in New York. The landlord said “next week” three weeks ago. She had every blanket they owned piled on Milo’s bed. His small body was burning up under them. His breathing was too fast. Too shallow. Every few minutes she checked his forehead with the back of her hand. Still burning. Milo was 5. Too small for his age. Too quiet. He had her nose and his father’s eyes. Black. Cold. Unforgiving. Eyes that looked through you like they already knew your secrets. She remembered those eyes. The hospital called twice today. “Miss Rose, we need payment or we’ll send this to collections.” Collections meant they’d take her tax return. Meant no food for Milo next month. Meant eviction by December. She had $217 to her name. The rent was $1800 and already 2 weeks late. The pink notice was taped to her door yesterday. PAY OR VACATE. She pressed her forehead to the cold window. 2:14am. The city was wet and mean and didn’t care. Neon signs blurred through the rain. A siren wailed somewhere far away. Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. She ignored it. It buzzed again. And again. Then came the knock. Not a knock. A pound. Three times. Hard. Like the person owned the door. Elena’s heart dropped to her stomach. Debt collectors didn’t come at 2am. Cops did. Or worse. She crept to the door barefoot. Chain still on. Looked through the peephole. Her blood turned to ice. Luca Moretti. CEO of Moretti Global. Net worth $9 billion. Face on the cover of Forbes last month. Black suit, even at 2am. Wet from the rain. Hair pushed back. Jaw clenched like he was holding back murder. And a face she tried to forget 5 years ago. One night. Vegas. She was 19 and waitressing double shifts to pay for nursing school. He was 27 and married to a socialite. He tipped her $5000 for one drink. Then $20,000 to spend the night in his penthouse. She told herself it was just money. Just one night. That she’d never see him again. She ran the next morning before sunrise and never looked back. Until now. “Elena.” His voice was low. Dangerous. It rolled through the door like smoke. “Open the door.” Her hands shook. Milo was sleeping in the bedroom with medicine that wasn’t working. Fever dreams. “What do you want, Luca?” She hated how her voice cracked. His jaw ticked. “I know. The boy. He’s mine.” The world stopped. The rain stopped. Her breathing stopped. Her heart stopped. “How—” “DNA test. My lawyer has been watching you for 3 months.” He held up a manila folder against the glass so she could see it. Official seal. “You ran with my son. That was mistake number one.” Elena’s chest hurt. “You were married.” “I’m divorced now.” He stepped closer. The chain pulled tight. She could smell his cologne through the door. Cedar and money and something dark. “And I’m taking what’s mine.” “I won’t let you—” “You don’t get a choice.” He slid the papers under the door. Thick. Legal. 40 pages at least. “Contract. 24/7 custody. You and the boy move into my estate tonight. You’ll be my... nanny. And my wife. On paper.” She laughed, but it came out broken. “What?” “1 year. $10 million. Access to my son whenever I want. Which is always.” His dark eyes burned into hers through the small gap. “Sign it, or I take him to court and you’ll never see him again. I have the better lawyers, the better money, and the better last name.” Elena looked at Milo’s hospital bill on the counter. $8,742. Then at the contract on the floor. Then at her bank account on her phone. $217.43. Her throat closed. “You’re a monster.” “I’m his father.” Luca’s voice dropped. Softer now. Deadlier. “Sign it, Elena. Before I do something we’ll both regret.” Her hand was shaking so bad she could barely hold the pen. She remembered his hands. How they felt on her waist 5 years ago in that Vegas penthouse. How he whispered “you’re mine” like a curse while the city lights blinked below. How he looked at her like she was the only thing in the world for 6 hours. She remembered crying in the bathroom after. Because she knew he was married and she did it anyway. Because she was 19 and stupid and desperate. She remembered the morning sickness 2 months later. The positive test. The decision to run. To disappear. To raise her baby alone. No child support. No name. No father. Outside, thunder rolled. She signed. Page after page. Elena Rose. Her name looked small next to Luca Antonio Moretti. Luca picked up the papers and smiled. But it didn’t reach his eyes. “Good girl. Pack one bag. My car is downstairs.” “I need to get Milo’s medicine—” “Already in the car.” He turned to leave, then stopped. Looked back over his shoulder. “And Elena? No running this time. I will find you. Every time.” As he turned to leave, the bedroom door creaked open. A small voice, raspy with fever: “Mommy? Who’s that?” Luca froze. In the doorway stood a 5-year-old boy with Luca’s exact black hair, and Luca’s exact cold, dark eyes. Pale from fever. Cheeks red. Holding a worn stuffed bear with one eye missing. Looking right at him. Luca’s entire cold mask cracked. Just for a second. “Hello, Milo,” he whispered. His voice broke. Milo blinked. Squinted at him. “Are you the man in mommy’s picture?” Elena’s heart stopped. Picture. The one she kept hidden in her drawer. From Vegas. The only photo she had of them together. She never thought Milo would find it. Luca looked at her. Betrayal and something else in his eyes. Then back at the boy. His son. He knelt down, even in his $10,000 suit, right there in the hallway. “Yeah. I am.” Milo tilted his head. “You’re tall.” Luca almost smiled. “So are you. You’ll be taller than me.” Elena watched them and felt the floor fall out from under her. Because Luca Moretti didn’t want just custody. He didn’t want just a contract wife. He wanted her. And Elena realized the $10 million was the least dangerous thing in that contract. Mrs. Hale, Luca’s housekeeper, stepped in from behind him with two bodyguards. “Sir, the car is ready. And the doctor is waiting at the estate.” Luca stood. “Pack what you need for the night. Clothes for the boy. Nothing else.” Elena nodded numbly. She went to the bedroom and packed in 3 minutes. One bag. Milo’s medicine. His bear. A change of clothes. When she came out, Luca was still on his knees talking to Milo in a low voice. “Does your head hurt? The car has blankets. You’ll be warm.” Milo leaned against the doorframe. “Are we going with you?” “Yes.” Luca’s voice was steady now. “You’re coming home with me.” Home. Elena flinched at the word. The ride to the estate was silent. Milo fell asleep on her lap in the backseat. Luca sat in the front, not turning around once. But his hand gripped the door handle so hard his knuckles went white. The Moretti Estate was 20 minutes outside the city. Gates. Security. A driveway that took 2 minutes to drive. The house was glass and stone and lights. Bigger than Elena’s entire apartment building. “Welcome,” Luca said as they got out. “To your new home.” Staff lined up. All in black. “This is Elena Rose. And Milo Moretti.” Luca’s voice was clear. “Treat them accordingly.” Elena’s breath caught at the last name. Moretti. Luca heard it. He looked at her. “That’s what’s on his birth certificate, isn’t it?” She didn’t answer. They were shown to rooms. Separate wings. As per the contract. But at 3am, Elena heard crying. She ran to Milo’s room. Luca was already there. Sitting on the floor next to the bed. Holding Milo’s hand. “Fever’s down,” Luca said without looking up. “101.2” Elena sat on the other side. They didn’t speak. Just watched their son sleep. When the sun came up, nothing had changed. But everything had. Rule 1: No emotional involvement. Rule 2: Separate bedrooms. Rule 3: He owns all decisions. Elena stared at the contract on the nightstand and wondered which rule she was going to break first. Because the way Luca looked at Milo... and the way he looked at her when he thought no one was watching... This wasn’t just a contract anymore. Later that morning, Elena stood in the kitchen of the Moretti Estate. It was bigger than her whole apartment. Marble counters. Fridge full of food she couldn’t name. Mrs. Hale handed her tea. “Sir said you should rest, Miss.” “I’m not tired,” Elena lied. She was exhausted. Luca walked in. Fresh suit. No tie. Hair still wet from shower. “Doctor will be here at 10. I cleared my schedule.” “You don’t have to—” “I do.” He cut her off. “He’s my son.” The word hung between them. Son. Milo came running in then, barefoot, holding his bear. “Mommy look! Big kitchen!” Luca’s entire face changed when he saw him. Softened. “Yeah it is. You hungry?” Milo nodded. For the next hour they made pancakes together. Luca was terrible at it. Flour on his $3000 shirt. Milo laughed. Elena watched and felt something dangerous in her chest. When Luca’s phone rang, he stepped away. His voice went cold again. “No. Move the meeting. I’m not coming in today.” He came back and caught Elena staring. His mask dropped for a second. “What?” he asked. “Nothing.” She looked away. “Thank you. For the pancakes.” Luca nodded once. “Don’t get used to it.” But that night, when Milo had a nightmare, Luca was the one who ran to his room first. Elena found them asleep together in the big bed. Milo curled against Luca’s chest. Luca’s hand resting protectively on his back. She stood in the doorway for a long time. Rule 1: No emotional involvement. She broke it the moment she signed. In her room later, Elena couldn’t sleep. The bed was too big. Too soft. The silence was too loud. She thought about the contract. 1 year. $10 million. Her son. She thought about Luca’s hands on Milo’s back. Gentle. Possessive. She thought about 5 years ago. How he said “I’ll take care of you” and she ran. A knock on her door. Soft. “Elena?” Luca’s voice. She opened it. He was in sweatpants and a t-shirt. No CEO. Just a man. “Milo’s awake. He’s asking for you.” She followed him down the hall. Milo was sitting up in bed. “Mommy, can he stay?” He pointed at Luca. Elena looked at Luca. Luca looked at her. “Yeah,” Elena whispered. “He can stay.” Luca sat on the other side of the bed. The three of them sat there in silence until Milo fell asleep again. When Elena finally went back to her room, she knew one thing. She was in trouble.
