Chapter-1 Pilot In the small, Virginia town of Mystic Falls, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and her brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) cannot come to grips with the fact that their parents had recently died in an crash involving their car driving off the edge of Wickery Bridge and that they are being looked after by their aunt, Jenna (Sara Canning), who acts more like their friend than a parent. Elena becomes emotionally withdrawn after recently breaking up with her boyfriend and former best friend, Matt, while Jeremy turns to drugs to avoid dealing with his own feelings. At school, Elena bumps into the mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), after she had just walked out of the men's restroom. The mystery guy attracts Elena's and clearly Caroline's attention. Elena goes to the cemetery to visit her parents' grave and write in her diary. While writing, a crow appears and refuses to move even when she attempts to scare it away. Suddenly, fog begins to cover everything and Elena starts running, dropping her journal. She trips, gets hurt, and upon standing up, finds Stefan there. While they talk, the smell of blood from Elena's leg seems to cause some changes in Stefan's face who vanishes as Elena lifts her pant leg up to check on the cut. He later goes to Elena's house to apologize for vanishing and returns her journal to her. He reassures her that he didn't read it, seeing as he wouldn't want anyone reading his. Moments later, Elena invites Stefan to The Mystic Grill with Matt, Caroline and Bonnie. Matt seems upset about his break up with Elena so he talks to Bonnie about it. Caroline walks in so Bonnie goes to talk to her. They take a seat and wait for Stefan and Elena to arrive. Afterwards, Stefan is invited to a campfire party which he agreed to go to if Elena goes to. She agreed. At the Salvatore house, Zach (Chris William Martin), after seeing the news about the two people who were attacked by an animal, asks Stefan why he came back and why he attacked these people despite his promise not to hurt anyone. Stefan denies that he had anything to do with the attack and leaves to attend the campfire party where Elena will be. Elena's friend, Bonnie (Kat Graham), tries to make fun of her grandmother who told her that she is a psychic, but she gets a picture of fog, a crow and a cemetery when she touches Elena. Intuitively, she suspects something is strange about Stefan when they meet up at a campfire party after Bonnie touched Stefan. She felt blackness. Death. Matt's sister Vicki (Kayla Ewell) is found by Jeremy in the woods, bitten by something they believe to be an animal. Stefan realizes that there is someone else in town who is like him and who is also responsible for the first two attacks and he runs back home; Matt watches him and thinks he is acting weird. As his sister is losing a lot of blood, Matt chooses to ignore the red flag. He informs Zach about it and then Stefan's brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), appears. Stefan confronts Damon why he is in Mystic Falls despite his dislike of the town. Damon answers that he is in town because of Elena, who looks similar to a girl named Katherine whom Stefan keeps a picture of from 1864. Damon tells Stefan to feed on Elena and the siblings get into a fight. Damon, who is much stronger than his brother because he is feeding on human blood, beats Stefan. Damon takes Stefan's ring which seems important for their survival though its features still seem mysterious, but he then gives it back. In the meantime, Vicki wakes up at the hospital with Matt by her side. She whispers the words "vampire" and then drifts back to sleep. Matt is concerned but doesn't want to wake her. Chapter - 2 The Night Of the Comet Vicki (Kayla Ewell) is still at the hospital after the vampire attack. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) visits her to see how she is doing, however she rebuffs him due to her feelings for Tyler (Michael Trevino) who has started showing more interest in her. Jenna (Sara Canning) has a meeting at the school with Mr. Tanner (Benjamin Ayres) about Jeremy and he informs her that Jeremy is missing many classes because of the drug and alcohol abuse, as well as insulting her capability in raising two teenagers. Jenna tries later to talk some sense to Jeremy, but fails. Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Matt (Zach Roerig) talk about Vicki and Matt tells her that Vicki said it was a vampire, but he does not believe her story. Stefan (Paul Wesley) who is sat close to them overhears their conversation and immediately worries that Vicki will expose vampires. He leaves for the hospital so he can compel her to forget and make her think that it was an animal who attacked her. Matt notices Stefan at the hospital and gets suspicious but Stefan narrowly escapes out of the window before Matt can catch him. Vicki says she was attacked by an animal but she still has nightmares where she sees Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) face. Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Caroline (Candice Accola) discuss the recent events and Caroline says that she met a mysterious guy, who turns out to be Damon, the other day but she cannot find him anywhere. Elena walks in and Caroline convinces her to move forward and give Stefan a chance, something she decides to do right away and she leaves for Stefan's house. Elena gets to the house, but Stefan is not there and she runs into Damon who introduces himself. He also seizes the opportunity to tell Elena about Stefan's ex, Katherine, and how she broke Stefan's heart. Stefan walks in and asks Elena to leave when Damon says that he will bring out the family album where there are also photos of Katherine. Vicki is out of the hospital and when she gets into the bar-restaurant, she runs into Damon, who she vaguely remembers. Damon follows her and attacks her once again. When Jeremy cannot find her anywhere, they all start looking for her, including Stefan, who hears her screaming from afar. Damon keeps her at the roof of a building threatening to drop her. Stefan rushes himself to the roof asking Damon to let Vicki go. Damon antagonizes Stefan by compelling Vicki into believing that Stefan attacked her, and tries forcing Stefan to kill her so she won't reveal everything. Stefan, however, refuses to do it saying that he does not care if Vicki exposes him and people kill him, which leads to Damon compelling her again into believing that an animal had attacked her. Back at the restaurant, Vicki is safe again and Stefan asks Caroline and Bonnie about Elena. Bonnie writes down Elena's number to give it to him but the moment she touches him she senses that something bad happened to him. She asks him about it but she realizes she was being rude so she apologizes and leaves. Stefan and Elena meet once again at the Salvatore house where he apologizes for his earlier behavior and she also tells him how scared she is to get out to the world. While they are talking, they have their first kiss. In the meantime, Damon stalked Caroline to the parking lot where the two of them flirt and end up at Caroline's room. While they are about to have s*x, Damon bites her. Chapter-3 Friday Night Bites Caroline (Candice Accola) awakens after the night she spent with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to find bite marks on her neck. She tries to escape from her room before Damon hears her, but he thwarts her attempt and attacks her again. Bonnie (Kat Graham) worries about Elena (Nina Dobrev) being with Stefan (Paul Wesley) after the bad feeling she had when she touched his hand. She tries to talk Elena out of committing to dating him but Elena is not convinced and instead she arranges a dinner at her place where Bonnie will have the chance to know Stefan better and see that there is nothing wrong with him. Vicki (Kayla Ewell) invites Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to a concert as friends. But he becomes angry, because he wants to be more than her friend and, out of frustration, he accuses her of only sleeping with him for the drugs. Tyler (Michael Trevino) picks on Matt (Zach Roerig) for his lack of action as Elena and Stefan grow noticeably closer. When Tyler throws a football at Stefan's head in an attempt to make a fool of him, Stefan deftly catches it, surprising everyone. Elena suggests that Stefan should join the football team in order to make friends, something that Stefan does even though at the beginning he is not very positive to the idea. Stefan asks Mr Tanner (Benjamin Ayres) to let him join the team but Tanner refuses because Stefan embarrassed him during history class. But Mr Tanner lets him try out and, impressed by his skills, lets Stefan join the team. Meanwhile, at cheer practice, Caroline shows up late because of Damon and Elena messes up the routine and eventually stops to watch Stefan play football. Elena and Bonnie prepare the dinner while waiting for Stefan and Bonnie tells Elena that she keeps seeing the numbers 8, 14 and 22, but she does not know what they mean. Stefan arrives but the dinner is awkward until Elena mentions that Bonnie's grandmother claims that their family are witches that come from Salem. Stefan tells Bonnie that her family heritage of witches is something to be proud of and Bonnie becomes more comfortable around Stefan. Caroline and Damon arrive unexpectedly and Stefan tries to convince Elena not to invite him in the house but she does not listen. During the evening's conversation, Damon makes a cryptic comment referring to their past with Katherine. Elena guesses that Damon also loved Katherine, surprising him by expressing her sympathy for him having lost her too. Meanwhile, Stefan confirms his suspicion that Damon is feeding off Caroline and attempts to convince him that humans are not to be used as toys. In response, Damon reminds Stefan that he has been invited into Elena's house and he can come back whenever he wants and do whatever he wants. He comes back in the evening and invades in one of Elena's dreams. Stefan ponders how to make Damon see his own humanity and how to protect Elena. At the football game, he gives her a necklace with vervain in it so Damon will not be able to affect her. Prior to the game, Mr Tanner gives a pep talk that highlights Stefan's talents, infuriating Tyler. A drunken Jeremy attacks Tyler because of the way he treats Vicki and a fight ensues between them. Stefan attempts to break it up but he cuts his hand. Elena sees his injured hand but when she tries to check on him, the wound has already healed, making her suspicious. This suspicion leads Elena to question Bonnie about her strange feeling she has for Stefan, and Bonnie tells her that it felt like death. Damon follows Elena to her car and attempts to compel her, and then he tries to kiss her. Elena slaps him and reminds him that she is not Katherine. Damon figures out that the necklace Stefan gave her contains vervain and that is why he was not able to compel her. He confronts Stefan and threatens to harm Elena. Stefan tells him that no matter how tough he is trying to be, he still has humanity in him. Damon, to prove him wrong, kills Mr Tanner before his eyes. Matt discovers Mr Tanner's body and calls for help. As the ambulance takes away the body, Bonnie watches in shock when she sees a sign for building eight, the number 14 on a license plate, and parking space 22 where Mr Tanner was killed - the three numbers she was seeing the whole day. Elena is confused and upset by the evening's events and Stefan assures her that they will be fine. After what happened, Stefan later writes in his journal that he is now convinced that there is nothing good left in Damon and that he must be stopped. At the same time, Damon is in Elena's room watching her sleep, (hinting he may have some type of feelings for her) but he leaves just as she wakes up. Chapter -4 Family Ties Elena (Nina Dobrev) waking up to a noise. While trying to check where it's coming from, she sees on the news that she was found dead after an animal attack. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) appears and starts chasing her. Stefan (Paul Wesley) wakes up from his dream with Damon sitting next to him. As it appears, all of these were just things that Damon put into Stefan's head while he was sleeping. Damon also informs him that the police captured the animal that is responsible for the attacks since he decided to stay for a while at Mystic Falls and he covered his tracks. Elena tries to polish a pocket watch from her family heirlooms because Mrs. Lockwood asked for it along with some other things for the Founders Council heritage display. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) gets upset when he hears that she is going to give it away and the two of them disagree about it. Stefan comes and Elena asks him to escort her to the Founder's Ball. At the same time, Damon compels Caroline (Candice Accola) to ask him at the Founder's Ball. Tyler (Michael Trevino) is at the barestaurant where Vicki (Kayla Ewell) works, having dinner with his parents. When Vicki comes to their table, he acts like he does not know her. After his parents leave, he tries to talk to her but she is upset and brings up the Founder's Ball and how he did not ask her to escort him. Tyler asks her but Jeremy sees the whole conversation and tells her that he only asked her because she brought it up. Bonnie (Kat Graham) talks with Caroline and encourages her to reveal the secret that Damon told her about Stefan because she is worried about Elena. Caroline reveals the secret and Bonnie tells Elena later about it, planting the suspicion that Stefan may be concealing the truth about his relationship with Katherine. Elena tells her that this is Damon's side of the story. At the Salvatore house, Zach (Chris William Martin) asks Damon why he came back, which makes Damon angry and he attacks Zach. Stefan intervenes between the two men and when Damon leaves, Zach encourages Stefan to use vervain on Damon to weaken him so he can fight him. Stefan tries to put it in Damon's drink but he fails since Damon figures it out and doesn't take a drink. Tyler arrives at the Gilbert house to get the box with the donated items his mother needs for the Founder's Ball. Elena gives it to him but later, Mrs. Lockwood calls to tell Elena that the pocket watch was not among the items. Elena says she will look for it and bring it to the Ball. She goes to Jeremy's room and accuses him of stealing it. Jeremy denies that he took it but he eventually gives it back to Elena telling her that he only took it because their father was going to give it to him. Feeling bad, Elena decides to return the watch to Jeremy before she leaves for the Ball. At the Founder's Ball, an ex-boyfriend of Jenna's (Sara Canning), Logan Fell (Chris Johnson), the town's news reporter attempts for reconciliation but Jenna turns him down because he was the reason she left Mystic Falls in the first place. He is persistent and at the end of the Ball, Jenna agrees to meet him for dinner. Damon wants to stay alone with Elena so he asks Caroline to ask Stefan for a dance. When they stay alone, he apologizes for his behavior at the game and explains that the Salvatore brothers are cursed with sibling rivalry. He shares with her the history of the "first" Salvatore brothers and the woman they both loved. Elena tells Damon that she does not want to be in the middle of their rivalry and she leaves. While dancing with Stefan, she asks about his past with Katherine but he refuses to tell her anything. Frustrated, Elena leaves him alone on the dance floor believing that what Bonnie told her might be true. Damon reveals the true motive for attending the Founder’s Ball when he retrieves a crystal hidden in a wooden box in the Heritage Display. Caroline tries to prevent him from stealing it but Damon explains that is not stealing since he is the one who put it there a long time ago. Meanwhile, Bonnie amazes herself when she can light every candle in the dining room using her powers. Elena sees the bite marks on Caroline's body and questions her about them. Caroline says that Damon did not intend to hurt her and leaves. Elena goes straight to Damon to warn him to stay away from Caroline and then goes to Stefan to apologize for her behavior earlier. She tells him about Caroline and what Damon is doing to her but Stefan reassures her that he is handling it. Having removed Caroline from view, Damon sinks his teeth into her neck but after drinking from her, he collapses onto the grass in agony. Stefan appears and he confesses that since he could not spike Damon's drink with vervain, he spiked Caroline’s, knowing Damon would bite her. Stefan carries Damon, who is too weak to resist, to the basement of their house and locks him there to protect Elena from him. The episode ends with Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood, Sheriff Forbes, and Logan Fell gathered together to discuss the pocket watch that Elena did not bring to the Ball and that they needed it. They ask Sheriff Forbes if she is sure about what is going on, and she says yes since all five dead bodies were drained of blood. Logan says: "They've come back" (hinting something about the four of them). Chapter-5 You're undead to me Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been locked up at the basement for three days now, and Stefan (Paul Wesley) checks on him and tries to reeducate him. Stefan also took Damon's ring that protects him from going out to the sun and he warns Zach (Chris William Martin) to stay away from the basement. Elena (Nina Dobrev) surprisingly finds Vicki (Kayla Ewell) in the bathroom, she having spent the night with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). Later, Elena asks Jenna (Sara Canning) if she knows about it but Jenna says she is fine with it. Jenna asks about Stefan and Elena admits that she has not heard from him for three days. At school, Caroline (Candice Accola) organizes a wash car fundraiser and informs Elena and Bonnie (Kat Graham) about it. Stefan arrives and Caroline asks where Damon is. Stefan only tells her that he left and he will not be coming back. Later at the Mystic Grill, a stranger (Bob Banks) sees Stefan and is convinced that they have met before. He says that Stefan has not aged at all and even Stefan tells Elena that the stranger must be mistaking him for someone else, but she is not convinced. She asks about him but Stefan denies to answer, something that makes Elena upset with him, and she leaves without him. Stefan, to make up to Elena, prepares her favorite dinner, while at the same time sharing more of his story about Katherine and what his likes are. Elena tries to help him with the preparation but she cuts her finger. Stefan's face changes because of the blood smell and Elena catches a glimpse of his face as it reflects in the window. She tries to see if he is fine but Stefan manages to regain control before he faces her again. Vicki and Jeremy hang out in his room where she finds Elena's pain medicine from the car crash. Later, Vicki takes Jeremy to her favorite hangout, the cemetery. Her friends are there and when she passes them Elena's pills, which she took from the house without telling Jeremy, he gets mad, takes the pills back and leaves. At the car wash fundraiser, Bonnie is annoyed by Tiki's (Brandi Coleman) attitude and, without knowing how she did it, uses her powers to make the water hose explode in Tiki's face. When later Tiki puts her on sweeper duty, Bonnie ignites a stream of water and Tiki's car gets set on fire. Stefan manages to stop her before it is burned completely and Bonnie tells him not to tell anyone what happened. Bonnie later goes to her grandmother (Jasmine Guy) and tells her that she does not know what is happening to her. In the meantime, Elena sees the stranger again while she is tending the cash table and asks him about Stefan. The man tells her that he stayed at the Salvatore boarding house and met Stefan in 1953 and that Stefan's uncle was attacked by an animal back then. Elena approaches Logan (Chris Johnson) and asks him if she can use the station's news archives. Logan tells her that of course she can and also arranges a dinner with Jenna at her place, where his goal is to get the Gilbert watch. Elena goes through the archives to research the attack and finds a video report. She plays it and is stunned to see someone who looks just like Stefan standing in the background. She tries to understand how he cannot be aging and starts putting the pieces together. But she is not willing to believe what is in front of her, so she decides to ask Stefan straight about it and leaves to find him at his house. Meanwhile, Damon tries to compel Caroline from his cell so she can come and free him. Caroline starts seeing visions of Damon and hearing his voice. She ends up at the Salvatore house and opens the door to Damon's cell. Zach gets there and struggles to shut the door while telling Caroline to run. Unfortunately, Damon snaps Zach's neck and chases after Caroline but she manages to get out of the house before he reaches her since he cannot go out into the daylight without his ring. Back at the Gilbert house, Logan searches Jeremy's room and finds the watch. He takes it and on his way out runs into Jeremy. He tells him that he was looking for the bathroom so Jeremy will not suspect anything and manages to get out with the watch. Vicky and her friends are still at the cemetery. Vicki goes to the car to turn the music back on and sees a man leaning against the car. She asks if he is okay and gets close to him, but it turns out to be Damon, who attacks her. Stefan gets back home and finds Zach dead. He immediately retrieves a stake and runs to find Damon but the moment he opens the door Elena is standing there, frighteningly asking him: "What are you?" Chapter -6 Lost Girls Elena (Nina Dobrev) asks Stefan (Paul Wesley) what he is. Before Stefan gives her an answer, there is a flashback to 1864 and we see Katherine and Stefan meet. Back in 2009, Stefan admits that he is a vampire and Elena freaks out running away even though Stefan tries to explain. He follows her to her home to promise he will not hurt her and he lets her know that he drinks animal blood and it was Damon (Ian Somerhalder) who killed all those people. Elena is still freaked out though and she asks him to leave. Damon is at the cemetery trying to cover his tracks after killing Vicki's (Kayla Ewell) friends. He calls Stefan asking for his ring while he douses the bodies with alcohol to burn them. Stefan says he will give Damon his ring back but not right away. They hang up and when he goes to Vicki to douse her too, she wakes up. The next day Elena meets Stefan at a public place to talk things over. Stefan answers her questions referring to vampires but she is mad at how he let Damon play with Caroline (Candice Accola) like that. Stefan agrees that it was not right but it is more dangerous to forbid Damon to do something. He also tells her that years ago, people in Mystic Falls knew about vampires but because it did not end well so he asks her not to tell anyone. Elena is not sure about that but she agrees to give him one day to convince her not to do it. Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) and Logan (Chris Johnson) find the bodies and they know that what killed them was a vampire. Logan informs her that he managed to take the Gilbert watch and now they have to take it to the Mayor (Robert Pralgo). The Mayor gets the watch and fits it into one of the other antiques, he says that it is ready and he hands it back to Logan. Damon is trapped at the house since he cannot get out to the sunlight and he is getting impatient waiting for Stefan to bring him his ring. He brought Vicki at the house who is lying on the couch. He decides to feed her his blood even though he says that he will regret it. Vicki feels much better after drinking the blood and the two of them have fun around the house dancing and drinking. Then, Damon unexpectedly snaps Vicki's neck. Stefan takes Elena into the woods where his house had been and he continues telling her about his past. While he talks, we get another flashback with him, Katherine and Damon. The two brothers play football and Katherine interrupts them. She flirts with Stefan, takes the ball and runs making the two brothers chase her. At another scene, Katherine says that she needs a date for the Founder's Ball and both brothers offer themselves with pleasure (hinting the brother's future rivalry). Back in the present, Stefan tells Elena that Katherine chose him to escort her at the Founder's Ball. Damon was not mad with her choice because he does not get mad but instead gets even. Stefan tells Elena that the night he took Katherine to the Ball, Damon was also with her. Back in 1864, where Katherine and Stefan are together in bed and it is revealed that Katherine was a vampire and she bites Stefan. The next morning, Stefan is horrified but she compels him not to say anything and she tells Stefan that the three of them (her, Stefan and Damon) will always be together. Stefan tells Elena that Katherine was controlling his mind and compelled both brothers not to tell each other the secret. Vicki wakes up asking what happened. Damon tells her that she is dead since he killed her and he informs her that now she only has to feed on a human to complete the transition to become a vampire. Vicki does not believe Damon and she leaves to go to Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). By the time she gets there, her eyes burn, the sun bothers her, she has a headache, and she is hungry. Jeremy thinks she is high and because of her strange behavior, he calls Matt (Zach Roerig). Matt gets there but he cannot do much to help Vicki when Stefan and Elena arrive. Stefan realizes what is happening and he compels Vicki to calm down and tells her that everything will be fine. He then explains to Elena and tells her that Vicki has to feed on human blood otherwise she will die. Jeremy and Vicki are alone in his room but she runs away when she feels the need to bite him. Stefan says he can track her and leaves to find her. When it gets dark, Damon leaves the house and goes to Elena's house. He sees that she is afraid of him and he figures out that Stefan told her about them being vampires. He reassures her that he is not there to hurt her but he is looking for Stefan. Since Stefan is not there, he leaves asking Elena to tell Stefan that he is looking for him in case she sees him. Meanwhile, Logan uses the Gilbert watch as a compass searching for something. Stefan finds Vicki crying. She starts remembering things and now she knows what is happening to her. Stefan promises that he can help her but Logan arrives and shoots him with wooden bullets. Logan is about to stake Stefan but Vicki pushes him away and Damon gets there and kills Logan. He then takes the bullet out of Stefan and he notices that it is wooden and realizes that people know about them. He takes his ring back and Vicki feeds on Logan, completing the transition. Stefan returns to Elena, explains what happened and he apologizes for not being able to save Vicky. Elena promises that she will not tell anyone about him being a vampire but not wanting to deal with the drama, she breaks up with him and the episode ends with her crying inside her house. Chapter-7 Haunted Vicki (Kayla Ewell) not being able to control her bloodlust and she attacks Tyler (Michael Trevino) at his car. Stefan (Paul Wesley) arrives just in time to stop her and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) compels Tyler to forget everything that happened. Everyone in town searches for the vanished Vicki, including Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) who wants
