Hylas An Argive youth, “golden-haired” Hylas become loved via Heracles. Son of Theodamas. Classical sources are Apollodorus’s Library (1.9.19, 2.7.7), Apollonius of Rhodes’s Voyage of the Argonauts (1.1,207–1,357), Propertius’s Elegies (1.20.5–32), Strabo’s Geography (12.4.3), and Theocritus’s Idylls (13.36–75). Hylas and Heracles joined the expedition of Jason and the Argonauts. During the voyage, the group arrived at Propontis, made camp, and Hylas became despatched to fetch water. He observed a spring and the nymphs living in it fell in love with him. They drew him into the water and held him speedy.
