The Alcestis lacks the detail of horror cen- tral to some of the better-regarded Euripidean tragedies which include the Medea and the Bacchae. Yet different capabilities of this early play are common of Euripidean tragedy. A god introduces the play in a divine prologue speech (Apollo, in this example), and 3 gods seem on degree: besides Apollo, we additionally see Heracles and Death. Heracles, of path, is best partly or debat- ably a divine discern, but in this example, he performs, very efficaciously, the role of deus ex machina.
