CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVELarry Haden The jail, Larry found, was dampish and smelled just like every other jail in the world, he suspected, no matter what sort of sanitation was practiced there. Larry perched on the cot, his hands clasped together between his knees, and took care not to stare out between the bars. He was going to be here all night. Tod Laine, Meg’s lawyer, had pulled every string he could find, but for some reason he had met obstinacy all the way down the line. Even when bail was met, it was not enough to free Larry before the next day. “I will have you out tomorrow,” Tod assured his client before he left. “Margaret has put up bail, and I cannot imagine why they set it so high for a piddling little complaint like this one. As soon as I find Judge Reese, we’ll get some action.”
