Callie Raftery drove home from work every day, thinking very little of the thirty miles of road in front of her. She hoped, every time, that she would arrive home to find her father returned, through some magical process, to being the man she had known as a child.
When her mother died, he had been steady as a rock. She had been thirteen then, and she recalled perfectly the comfort he had given her in the months following their loss. He had not been mean-tempered and surly then. It was when Grandfather went that he changed. With the loss of his father, it was as if something inside Jack Raftery died, as well. What came to live in its place was a person who frightened his daughter, when she returned home to help him settle matters.
