CHAPTER SIXTEEN ROWAN I stood there in the hallway, holding a bouquet, like an i***t for what felt like an hour. Anna just stared at me. I stared at her. I waited for anything to happen. A piano falling on my head would've been preferable than this silence. "Oh, for the love of God," Anna said finally. She took the flowers from me and gestured me inside. "What is it with everybody today?" I inhaled the scents of onion and garlic. "Did you cook something?" "Yeah, but you don't get any." I watched as Anna searched for a vase. When she realized that the flowers were too tall, she sighed and put her head down on the counter. I'd decided to come over on a whim. I'd seen the bouquet of flowers at the grocery store, and then I'd driven to Anna's house like we lived in a small town instead
