Chapter 4

792 Words
When Gino was about to leave, Maureen begged him to stay once again. Maureen pouted her lips. She wrapped her arms around his waist pitifully. "Gino, can't you just stay?" Gino's heart suddenly skipped a beat. This flustered feeling made him unable to stay any longer. Originally, he thought he still loved Maureen. But after spending the past two days with her, Gino felt none of the excitement he had when they reunited. He kept getting distracted, his thoughts drifting to Patricia. The way she smiled, the way she got mad, the way she acted all cutesy and spoiled. Patricia in all her different forms. For the first time, Gino realized that he seemed to have fallen in love with this young wife of his. As for his feelings for Maureen, he probably wasn't as in love with her as he thought he was. With that thought, Gino put away his tender, soft demeanor. He detachedly pulled away Maureen's arms that were wrapped around him. He spoke coldly, "Maureen, I promised Patricia I'd go back to accompany her today." Maureen froze slightly when her arms were pulled away. Then she looked at him in disbelief. "Gino? What do you mean by that?" Gino tugged at his tie, looking faintly annoyed. "Stop being unreasonable. I already missed accompanying Patricia to her prenatal checkup today. I have to rush back now." Maureen stared at him silently. A moment later, she let out an uncontrollable, sarcastic laugh. "Patricia? You're calling her so affectionately all of a sudden. When you were grinding your foot on her ankle yesterday, why didn't you recognize your Patricia then?" Gino's movements froze abruptly. He lifted his head sharply, staring intently at Maureen. He spoke every word slowly, sounding half confused, half demanding, "What did you say? Who was it that I stepped on yesterday?" Maureen had not yet realized that danger was approaching. She stood up seductively, convinced that her provocation had worked. She wanted to use this method to make Gino come to his senses. Patricia was nothing but a substitute for her, Maureen. That was all she was. Who cares if she gets hurt? It's no big deal if she ends up broken or worse. She, Maureen, was already back by his side now. Therefore, Gino's eyes should only ever look at her. They should only ever hold her. He should only ever love her. Even a substitute was not allowed. That would be a blasphemy against their love. Besides, what seven months? She couldn't even stand seven days! It was just a child, wasn't it? She could have children too. Maureen pressed her waist against his hips, rubbing against him with swaying movements. She hooked her delicate hand around Gino's neck. She spoke in a soft, coquettish voice, "Gino, stay with me one more night..." She even faked a cough. What Maureen did not expect was that this time, she had made a terrible mistake. When she came to her senses, the ruthless man in front of her had a vicious grip on her throat. Gino clamped one hand around Maureen's neck, lifting her high off the ground. Maureen could not breathe, and was pounding frantically on his lean arm. Her feet were already off the ground, and she kept kicking like a fish gasping for air out of water. But Gino seemed completely oblivious. His pupils kept narrowing, swallowing up all the visibility around him. He looked like a ferocious demon straight out of hell. Maureen was finally scared. "I'm... I'm sorry..." Her trembling voice came out squeezed through clenched teeth. As if suddenly remembering something, Gino violently flung her to the ground like a discarded rag. He took a deep breath, his gaze terrifyingly fierce. "Maureen, if you dare show up in front of Patricia again, I will not spare you." With that, he stormed out the door in a frantic hurry. At the same time, he frantically called Patricia on his phone. But it kept going straight to the "phone is switched off" prompt. He called the housekeeper: Also off. He called the maid: Off! Gino sped down the highway at breakneck speed. His eyes were red, as if burning with clusters of raging fire. He felt like he was going crazy. Yet he still felt he was not driving fast enough, not fast enough at all! A massive, overwhelming panic settled over his chest. Gino thought to himself, as long as he saw Patricia, as long as she was not angry with him, he would properly apologize and repent to her, even get down on his knees for her if that's what it took. And as for Maureen, if Patricia refused to forgive him, he would never let her get away with it!
