When the ancient prophecy awakens, Aria becomes the center of a bond powerful enough to shake four kingdoms.

A dragon king who burns for control.

A fae king who laughs at chaos.

A warrior king who steadies storms.

A scholar king who sees too much.

Each of them feels the bond differently—fire, chaos, peace, and precision—but none of them can escape it.

As memories of a forgotten war return through her dreams, Aria must decide whether the bond is salvation or destruction.

Because peace can be just as dangerous as fire—and the prophecy never intended for her to be ruled.

It intended for her to survive ruling them.

The Bound That Hurts First
Aria I wasn’t meant to hear it. If I had taken the longer path back from the training grounds, or stopped to speak with the others, or even lingered a moment less beneath the old stone archway, I would have missed it entirely. Everything would be different. But I didn’t. And now I can’t unhear it. “I’ll reject her at first light.” For a heartbeat, the words don’t make sense. They drift through the corridor like something overheard in passing—light, distant, not meant for me. Then they settle, heavy and immovable. I stopped walking. My body reacts before my mind does, going still in a way that feels instinctive, defensive. Because I know that voice. I know it better than I should. Kael. My future mate. Or—was. I don’t mean to listen. I don’t mean to stay. But my feet won’t move, and the cold stone wall beside me suddenly feels like the only thing keeping me upright. “You’re sure about this?” another voice asks. I don’t recognize it. It doesn’t matter. “I don’t have a choice,” Kael answers. My fingers curl slowly at my sides. No choice. That’s what this is to him? “She’s the alpha’s daughter. The bond was arranged before we were even born.” Arranged. Like a treaty. Like livestock. Like something that never had a say. “And I won’t be tied to something I didn’t choose.” Something. Not someone. The distinction cuts deeper than it should. “She’s not weak,” he adds after a pause. “But she’s not what I need.” Those words land harder than the rest—sharper, more honest. Not what I need. The sentence repeats itself in my mind until it becomes unbearable. “I need a partner who strengthens my position. Someone strategic. Someone who understands what it means to rule.” My chest tightens. Because I do understand. He just never cared enough to notice. Never cared enough to know me beyond the title attached to my name. “She’s… too much of a risk.” I release a slow breath, careful not to make a sound. Careful not to exist. “And rejecting her won’t cause problems?” the other voice asks. “It will,” Kael admits. “But it’s better than being tied to the wrong mate.” The wrong mate. The words echo until they lose meaning—then strike harder when they settle again. “She’ll recover.” That almost makes me laugh. Almost. “They always do,” he adds. “Even if she doesn’t, it isn’t my problem. It’s hers.” That’s the moment something inside me changes. Not loudly. Not violently. Completely. Because he’s already decided who I am—weak, replaceable, recoverable. He doesn’t know me at all. The conversation continues, but I stop hearing it. My mind has already gone somewhere colder, clearer. I push away from the wall slowly, controlled enough not to make a sound. No sudden movement. No reaction. I won’t give myself away. I won’t give him the satisfaction of knowing I heard any of it. So I walk. Each step feels deliberate, measured, like moving too quickly might shatter something inside me. But nothing breaks. The corridor remains unchanged. The castle still stands. The world keeps moving. Only I do not. By the time I reach open air, the sun is sinking behind the mountains, casting long shadows across the training grounds. This place should feel familiar—grounding, strong. I spent years here proving I was more than a title, more than the alpha’s daughter, more than a future luna. But now it feels different. My father’s voice surfaces faintly in my mind. Not warm. Not comforting. Distant. Because that’s what he has always been. Alaric—my father, my alpha. The man who should have raised me but didn’t. Instead, I had Darius Nightfang. My uncle. My mentor. The one who taught me how to fight, how to survive, how to think three steps ahead in a world that punishes weakness without hesitation. He never treated me like something fragile. Never expected me to shrink to make others comfortable. Never once made me feel like I should be grateful simply to be chosen. And yet—here I am. The realization settles slowly. This was never about love. Never about partnership. Never about me. It was about expectation, duty, politics. And Kael just shattered all of it without hesitation. Good. The thought arrives quietly, but once it appears, it stays. If he does not want me, then I refuse to stand there and let him reject me first. The idea steadies something inside me instantly. I straighten, rolling my shoulders back as the ache in my chest hardens into something sharper. Not heartbreak. Not anger. Control. I have trained my entire life for moments like this. Not for rejection—no one prepares you for that—but for survival, composure, and standing upright while the world tries to force you to your knees. I know how to take a hit. I know how to bleed without letting anyone see it. And I know how to stand back up afterward. This will be no different. By the time darkness settles fully over the castle grounds, my choice is already made. Kael thinks I’ll recover. He’s right. But not in the way he expects. Because tomorrow, he won’t be the one walking away from the bond. I will.
